Structurally, a demon pit has two regions, and is shaped like a mushroom.  The top mushroom-cap contains the body parts, engravings, and slaves on several floors connected by stairs.  The bottom stem is an empty shaft which dives downwards into an "Eerie glowing pit," which is presumably the same as a bottomless chasm.  Demons spawn from the torture rooms. Thus, if you break into the bottom shaft (which is harder to find, as it is narrower), only flying demons will attack at first, since ground-based demons will not be able to path down the shaft to your break-in point. If you break into the torture rooms, all demons will immediately attack.

This page is about the mountain feature. You may be looking for the pit/pond designation for activity zones, or for bottomless pits, a form of chasm.

Spoiler2010.png This article contains massive spoilers. If you do not wish to have your game experience spoiled, do not scroll down!

A glowing pit is a small impassable chasm, usually found near or within adamantine deposits deep in the earth. There is one glowing pit per mountain region, and can be located by searching for 'other features' in the site finder. They are sometimes surrounded by mysterious rooms. These are very dangerous regions that can cause the destruction of even a well prepared fortress.

If you dig deep enough in the right place, perhaps following that vein of glorious adamantine, you might break into a peculiar chamber with strange glowing pits at the bottom.

Because pre-existing architecture shows up as an asset of your outpost, you can check the z status screen as soon as you strike the earth; demon pits will typically show up as 4000☼ of total wealth.

There will be chained and caged humanoids, body parts, upright spears and pikes, bones and skulls, and horrifying engravings in this room. These are a warning. If you do not take drastic measures such as rewalling the chamber to seal it, the glowing pits will unleash a horde of demons upon your fortress. Upwards of 30 demons can spawn from a single pit. 30 Spirit of fire demons tend to do very bad things to any fort.

The pits contain a very small amount of magma, usually only enough for a handful of smelters or forges, but sometimes enough small deposits for a good-sized industry.

Of course, you'll have to deal with the demons first...
