A cave is a natural formation that occurs in mountainous or rocky areas. Some caves may contain hostile creatures or water, and vary in size from a few tiles to long, winding passageways. Caves can span many z-levels up and down.

Caves tend to be somewhat rare when placing a fortress, and the easiest places to find them seem to be named locales such as mountains and volcanoes.

It is believed that the Dwarves' ancestors once lived in caves thousands of years ago, but most modern Dwarves scoff at the idea that their distant relatives could have lived in such base conditions.
