Wikipedia article

This article is about an older version of DF.

Saltpeter is a non-economic and low-value yellow stone found within sedimentary layers. With a melting point of 10601 °U and a boiling point of only 10720 °U , it is one of the few stones which will boil in magma.

Saltpeter is also the most lightweight stone besides raw adamantine, so it is preferable for making large pots and other commonly-hauled items, and absolutely inappropriate for stone-fall traps and catapults. Additionally, saltpeter crafts are even more lightweight than normal crafts; this can be very helpful for maximizing caravan output.

In real life, it is used in conjunction with charcoal and sulfur in order to make gunpowder. This process does not exist in Dwarf Fortress, and therefore gunpowder is also non-existent.

Don't believe everything you read, and if you miss some of the references, don't worry. It was inevitable.

It is rumored that if a dwarf ever discovers saltpeter's capabilities, dwarven "Civilization" would come to an explosive, but Fun end.
