Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and copper. Real world pure silver is usually considered too soft for craftwork and so is merged with other metals to improve its strength and durability. Sterling silver has no other benefits over the silver and copper it is made from than saving refined coal, as the total value of metal remains the same at 32 units (3*10 and 1*2 -> 4*8), but the resulting Sterling silver cannot be used to produce weapons or armour and items made from it have a lower material value than pure silver, making it a bad choice for high value items.
