An Instrument is a craftable item. This category includes drum, flute, harp and piccolo. They serve no other purpose than as an export good until you have begun the dwarven economy, when they will become a wanted trinkets among some dwarves.
Instruments can be made from materials accessable by any craftsdwarf, which includes stone, metal, wood and bone. On occasion, a dwarf in a strange mood will make an insturment out of materials not normally suited for instruments, such as cloth.
