Dwarves best friend. Dogs are the only animals that can be trained to assist your dwarves as wardogs and hunting dogs in combat and hunting, respectively. Like all animals they can serve as an emergency food supply and provide you with bones, leather, and skulls for trading goods.

Note: Once a war or hunting dog is assigned to a dwarf
( v , select dwarf, p , e ), it can not be unassigned or placed in a cage any more.v0.27.173.38a

Wardogs

Wardogs are trained at the kennel, and are tougher and more aggressive than an untrained dog. A wardog can be assigned to a dwarf through the preferences menu v-p-e, and will follow that dwarf like a pet. It can not be unassigned or placed in a cage any more.v0.27.173.38a

Stray wardogs can be chained or caged to release on invaders, or when left free they will wander around the meeting areas and attack thieves.

Hunting dogs

These are dogs that are trained to hunt and help your hunters. They are trained to be faster to help them catch their prey like deers faster. They do not have as high combat value as wardogs and are easily killed by more thougher adversaries like goblins.
