When an animal, like a dragon or alligator, kills a humanoid during worldgen, it is named (same as during game). As a result, it will move into a cave and can be come across by a player who settles on said cave. Instead of 'wild animal' they will be designated "current resident".

They are not affected by traps and they are a bit stronger than regular animals of their kind.

Other creatures like trolls or giant rats that may actually dwell in the cave too will be listed as wild animal unless they are named.
