This article is about an older version of DF.

Chitin is the material of an insect's carapace, but in Dwarf Fortress it is effectively identical to leather in all but name. In theory, weapons made from chitin will do the same damage as those made from iron, but in practice it's not possible to make such things.

Since in DF, this only comes from butchering giant insects like giant cave spiders and giant desert scorpions, it is quite valuable (x10 multiplier) as a raw material, especially compared to most other leathers. Caravans can carry chitin as a trade good if the relevant creatures are available to them, though the chances aren't particularly high (unless the Human civilization's guild representative allows you to request it).
