This article is about an older version of DF.

The mayor is a Noble whose job it is to deal with disgruntled workers and entertain foreign diplomats. He or she is automatically created from the Expedition leader once the population reaches 50, although a new mayor will be elected from time to time.

Mayors are elected for one year. Elections take place at exactly 8:00 AM on the 17th day of Summer (specifically, 2080 season-ticks after the beginning of the season). If you don't have a Mayor, then the election will happen at the beginning of every season, rather than just summer. The newly elected Mayor will demand improved accommodations accordingly, and the former Mayor will revert to the profession they had previously and will no longer require those rooms. Becoming Mayor gives a happy thought. Dwarves currently in the military are not eligible to be elected as mayor unless there are no other candidates available. The main factors in election to the office of Mayor are the number of friends a dwarf has, any family members in the fortress, and the levels of their social skills. However, there is a random element to it, and so it is quite possible for a dwarf with no social skills and fewer friends to be elected over a dwarf who has either or both.

A Mayor will sometimes make mandates, which can include banning exports or producing certain goods. If a new Mayor is elected when a mandate is in effect, that mandate will be cancelled (and no dwarves will be punished for not meeting it).

Once the economy activates, the Manager will receive complaints from any underworked dwarves and then relay them to the Mayor, leading to potential wage adjustments or guild mandates.
