This article is about an older version of DF.

Gather plants is a designation that sets up jobs to harvest wild plants, also known as shrubs. You assign dwarves to gather plants by the designate -> gather plants menu, then selecting the opposites corners of a square within which all harvestable plants will be designated.

Gathering plants uses the herbalism skill.

This is a good way to get some seeds that you cannot select at the start screen. This is less efficient than Farming.
