Overview
When a dwarf dies in Fortress Mode, you will receive an ominous purple message that Urist McDwarf has been found dead as soon as someone finds the body. In Adventurer mode, a more explicit cause of death will be given. The actual cause of death may be anything from old age, starvation, drowning, to stumbling upon many of the hostile cavern creatures. Beware! Often the killer will still be looming nearby, ready to maim dwarves who come to retrieve the body or items from the dead.
Corpses
When a creature dies, it leaves behind a corpse. If left unattended, the corpse will then follow to rot over the course of the next month or two. Rotting corpses not only stink horribly, but the sight of death alone makes passing dwarves stress out, in both cases leading to unhappy thoughts. In certain fun scenarios, corpses can even rise from the dead. Therefore, it is advised to deal with corpses as soon as possible, either by butchering (if animal), burial (if dwarven), atom smashing, or simply moving them away to a dedicated stockpile where they will (hopefully) not bother anyone.
