DF2014 Talk:Windmill

From Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

It says the wind level is determined by the placement in the world, but is a higher or lower latitude better or worse?

I made a graph of it from version 0.34.11, and as far as I know it still works that way; however, I don't recall how the "wind strength" in that graph translates to the amount of power generated by a windmill. --Quietust (talk) 00:04, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

"you MUST channel out the central tile?"[edit]

Hi - long time player here, have never tried building a Windmill until the Steam release. I'm assuming the gameplay behavior of the Windmill wouldn't have changed. This article currently says "The power generated by a windmill is transmitted downward through its center tile, so you must channel out the central tile and build the windmill on top of an existing vertical axle or gear assembly (or the actual machine you wish to power)." I'm confused by this, since in some screenshots I had seen players attach horizontal axles directly out of the Windmill. I gave this a try, and sure enough I can power my mills fine without channeling under the Windmills, so this description of how they work doesn't seem to be accurate. I might assume that this sentence is actually describing a best practice for transmitting power down - if this is the case, I would think it should be moved to later in the article, and maybe have a description of how to attach it to power outputs early on. screenshot of steam version 50.03 windmills transfering power only using a horizonal axle, no channel underneath: https://imgur.com/Js9oJcF 198.98.207.136jojo
