Does grass grow on mud?[edit]

Will grass grow on stone if it has been muddied? --Xonara 14:07, 25 October 2008 (EDT)

No, it won't. Even if the stone is outside in sunny area. --Someone-else 14:30, 25 October 2008 (EDT)
Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Now that I think about, nothing would grow in a mountainous biome, which is probably what you tried. But what if you go into a forest biome, make a huge pit with bedrock in it, and then muddy it? Maybe that wouldn't be very useful, but I'm curious anyway. --Xonara 20:29, 26 October 2008 (EDT)

Regrow details[edit]

In version 0.28.181.40d, plant growth ticks worked as follows:

  • If the tile is Dark:
    • If the tile is Outside, nothing happens (this is generally impossible anyways)
    • If the tile is a Boulder, Driftwood, Ice, Brook Top, Stairs, Ramp, or Construction, or is in an Ocean biome, nothing happens
    • If the tile is a Soil floor (including Furrowed) or is Muddy, then the tile has a 1/20 chance of sprouting a subterranean Shrub or Sapling
  • If the tile is Light:
    • If there is a Bone, Shell, or Skull in the tile, it will be destroyed
    • In an evil-aligned area, there is a chance to abort (based on the "dead vegetation percentage")
    • If the tile is a Stone Floor, Boulder, Pebbles, Driftwood, Ice, Brook Top, Stair, Ramp, or Construction, or is in an Ocean biome, nothing happens
    • If the tile is blocked by a Building (of certain types), or its water level is above 1 or its magma level is above 0, nothing happens
    • It does another dead vegetation check
    • It checks the tile's Biome:
      • If the biome is a Mountain or Glacier, nothing happens
      • If the biome is a Sand Desert, Ashes and Furrowed Soil will turn into normal Soil without ending the growth tick, and then any Above-Ground Soil (furrowed or otherwise) has a 1/20 chance to grow a shrub or sapling
      • If the biome is a Tundra, Badlands, or Rocky Wasteland, Ashes and Furrowed Soil will turn into normal Soil and then end the growth tick; otherwise, any Above-Ground Soil (furrowed or otherwise) has a 1/20 chance to grow a shrub or sapling
      • If the biome is anything else, subterranean tiles get skipped, Ashes and Furrowed Soil turn into normal Soil and end the growth tick, soil floors/ramps/stairs grow Grass and end the growth tick, and grass floors have a 1/20 chance to grow a shrub or sapling

Versions 0.31.25 through 0.47.05 (and likely all later versions too) seem to behave similarly, except the Desert/Tundra logic appears to have been removed - all biomes which support plant growth use the Ash/Furrowed -> Soil -> Grass -> Plant logic (requiring up to 3 growth ticks). --Quietust (talk) 22:49, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
