Confusingly, for Dwarves with the automatically-assigned title of "Blacksmith", their primary skill will be listed as "Metalsmith", not Blacksmith. "Metalsmith" as a *title* being bestowed on Dwarves with multiple metal-related skills IIRC... Raumkraut 20:15, 29 March 2008 (EDT)

Can someone confirm how much work this skill needs? My skilled metalsmith has done 77 nickel buckets without skill increase. Shiona 16:42, 19 August 2008 (GMT)

Experience gain for most items seems to be 30xp (e.g. a block of metal), thus it should take 34 jobs to train a proficient smith to talented.
But there is a (material-wise) cheap way to train blacksmithing. Building architecture with metal bars will increase the skill. Support and archery target gain 2xp, a depot 6 xp, and bridges or paved roads 6 xp for each bar of metal that is used for construction. Thus a 4x4 bridge will gain you as much as a smithing job. The material will be recovered after deconstructing the building. Your smith will also gain architecture (30xp per job). The building might be constructed by any dwarf with a smithing profession, but the gain will always be in blacksmithing, so you might want to disable smithing professions for all other dwarfs.
This will take a lot of effort from the player for relatively little gain. But it might still be seen as an exploit.
I wonder if this info should be included in the page? Weapon- and armorsmithing have training information. -hermano
