23a:Thoughts and preferences

From Dwarf Fortress Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search
This article is about an older version of DF.

The most detailed screen in the profile is the thoughts and preferences screen, accessible with u-v-Enter or v-z-Enter. It gives you a detailed breakdown of your dwarves' thoughts and preferences. All dwarves have one piece of their profiles in common: "He/she needs alcohol to get through the working day".

Thoughts[edit]

Main article: Thoughts

This section will state the name of the dwarf and then their overall status (Ecstatic/Happy/Content/Unhappy/Very unhappy/Miserable). It will then list their recent thoughts, providing an overview of what's making them happy or unhappy.

Preferences[edit]

Main article: Preferences

Dwarves like certain materials, colors, animals, and brews of alcohol, and detest certain vermin. Being exposed to these likes or dislikes will give them a higher-then-normal chance of getting a higher-then-normal positive or negative thought, respectively. This comes in handy most when designating dwarves for duties, as dwarves love to work with materials and creatures of their preferences, and will produce higher quality goods as a result. Being able to outfit nobles' quarters with classy preferable items is a perk, too.

Miscellaneous traits[edit]

All dwarves "need alcohol to get through the working day" - that's part of being a dwarf. Going without alcohol for too long leads to withdrawal, adding the text "and is starting to work slowly due to its scarcity", "and really wants a drink", "and has gone without a drink for far, far too long", and finally "and can't even remember the last time he/she had some", progressively reducing work and movement speed.

One in every 3 migrants will be accustomed to "outdoor survival" circumstances and will receive reduced happiness penalties for things like being rained/snowed on, drinking unclean water, or having to sleep on the ground (see thought for a complete list). Of these, 33% will have high resistance and be described as "likes working outdoors and grumbles only mildly at inclement weather", and the remainder will have moderate resistance and be described as "does not mind being outdoors, at least for a time". Additionally, your initial embark party will all have high resistance. These dwarves are especially well-suited for military service and hunting, as well as outdoor wood cutting and plant gathering.

Dwarves who have been exposed to violence and death will gradually become accustomed to it, being described as "is getting used to tragedy", "is a hardened individual", and eventually "doesn't really care about anything anymore", receiving progressively reduced happiness penalties from certain unhappy thoughts.
