On my Mac, when taking the advice here and replacing [AQUIFER] with (AQUIFER), the game would no longer generate worlds: pressing "y" after the "parameters" screen would simply not do anything. Deleting the [AQUIFER] entry in its entirety instead of replacing it with a placeholder fixed the problem.

==Going Around An Aquifer In A Single Biome?==
I noticed something odd in 0.34.01: I was trying to get aquifer and easy magma in one embark, and found a small volcanic mountain by a forest that would work. If I centered on the volcano, with most of the embark being the single forest area, it showed no aquifer, but moving north a bit showed aquifer in the forest area. Are the biomes after embark smaller than the areas that flash on the embark screen? Once embarked it looked contiguous. (I didn't probe much before changing the raws enough to gen a new world.)

The suggestion that you can remove aquifers from savegame raws no longer works -- the aquifer persists despite editing of the raws.

They can still be removed with the command 'tiletypes' in dfhack, using 'paint aqua 0' and a large brush. It took me a while to realize this.

== Which Direction do Aquifers "absorb" from? ==

Playing the most recent version of the game, Mac vanilla, and I tried to get a perpetually flowing aquifer river going.  First I dug into a room with an aquifer inside and sealed it.  Next I went to the level above, dug holes in the floor to the pool below, and then dug into the wall of that room which was also an aquifer.

Since water was coming out of the upper aquifer tile horizontally, and filling a pool with a direct connection to a level below, shouldn't the water in the lower level have become pressurized and flowed back into the exposed Aquifer on the lower level, thus setting up flow?

I then did the simpler method of a down staircase above the first level, and an up/down piecing the first into the second aquifer level, and there was flow.

It seems like Aquifer tiles only accept flow if the water is above them and the floor of the level above has been breached.

The wikipage makes it seem like they'd absorb from any direction, at least horizontally, but this does not seem to be the case.  Thoughts?

:Make sure you are dumping pressurized water into an actual aquifer tile. If you merely dig underneath the upper aquifer until the tiles start to fill with water, you may be receiving water from the aquifer layer above instead of an aquifer on the same level. You can [[channel]] out the upper aquifer tiles first, to allow you to dig a dry tunnel underneath them to reach a lower-level aquifer. -- [[User:Loci|Loci]] 00:08, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
