This article is about an older version of DF.

Magma lakes

Magma lakes are located at the bottom of every map, forming an almost impenetrable barrier. They also provide a great source of magma. Semi-molten rock can also be found around the magma lakes, and cannot be dug through.

Magma pipes

Magma pipes are present in the new version of Dwarf Fortress as well. They can be found underground, however they rarely reach the upper z-levels (40+). Most end just a few z-levels above the magma lakes, some span up to more than 100 z-levels, however that seems to remain the exception. Magma pipes seem to be always connected to a magma lake and often lake and pipe reach up to the same level, making them hard to separate. However, magma pipes are surrounded by obsidian walls and can thus be identified. Also, magma pipes refill themselves, which provides a never depleting magma reservoir.

Properties of magma

Magma no longer burns dwarves when it is at low levels. A dwarf can occupy the same space as [1/7] magmaPossibly higher? [Verify] without dying. This means that a miner breaching a pipe or the sea can run away, which makes it easier to do than in previous versions.
