Editing User talk:Gzalzi

Welcome to this wiki! Dwarf Fortress rapidly becomes more complicated, and we're always glad to have new writers.<br>
Since you should try to follow wiki standards, and you probably don't know ours yet, we've made a list of basic guidelines. Note that this is a template, not a customized message for you.
* To tell us who you are when you talk, please sign your posts on discussion pages by typing <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> after your posts. This can also be inserted with the [[Image:Button sig756222.png]] button if JavaScript is enabled.
* Don't put a question mark in the title of a page. Question marks mess things up, and your page will be moved to a different name.
* When making comments on a talk page, use one more colon before each line in your comment than was used in the comment you reply to. In general, put exactly one empty line between comments by different users but do not use blank lines inside of a comment.
* Avoid making many small edits to a page. Instead, try to make one large edit. This makes the history of the page a lot easier to read.
* Don't edit the user page of another user. If you want to tell them something, add the comment to their talk page.
* If you put a comment at the bottom of a talk page with section headers, you've probably put it in a section. Putting things in the wrong sections is confusing. You can create a section!
* Generally, [[Dwarf_Fortress_Wiki:Community_Portal#We_are_doing_this.21_Let_us_do_it_right.|read and follow the rules.]] They're like a little constitution, except not boring! Really, read them.
* Read the [[df:Announcements|site announcements]] regularly, they contain important info.
* Check up on the [[df:Manual of Style|manual of style]] occasionally, it's still being written, but will contain important style info soon.
* Some pages have version-specific articles, (ie: 40d, 23a...) when creating a redirect from the mainspace to a version specific article, use cv: instead of the version namespace.

I noted your recent chastising of a person's Talk-page question, and I figured I'd point out to you {{rule|D}}.  We do encourage questions;  they help in letting us DFWiki-contributors know what needs improving in the relevant article. "Shouldn't the article contain information x?" is different from "How do I solve minor problem x?" == Main namespace redirects ==

I don't recall exactly where it's stated, but the current policy for redirects from the main namespace is that they should always point to the cv: namespace article '''of the same name''', and that the version-specific namespace should then redirect to whatever is appropriate. The example given at the time was "cheese" - 40d redirects "cheese" to "cheese maker", but DF2010 has its own dedicated page for cheese, so redirecting "cheese" to "cv:cheese maker" back in 40d (hypothetically, since the multiple namespaces didn't happen until ''after'' DF2010) would have broken things. :I'm not sure I understand this rule. "Cheese" shouldn't go to "cv:cheese maker" because old links to "Cheese" will take the user to "DF2010:Cheese maker"? The bit even mentions that links from old versions are automatically updated to add "40d:" behind them; wouldn't that go to "40d:Cheese" anyway and the changing of the "Cheese" redirect to "cv:Cheese maker" would have no affect?  The explanation does not make sense to me. ::The reason for "cheese" to not redirect to "cv:cheese maker" is because while it may have been acceptable for 40d (which did not have an actual "cheese" article), DF2010 '''does''' have a "cheese" article which people would then '''not see''' when searching because of the redirect going to the wrong page. As for all of the DF2010 redirects you marked for deletion, you also need to take into account the "article version" headers on each page - as an example, there are explicit pages for [[23a:Waterskin]] and [[40d:Waterskin]] (since military dwarves in those versions never use flasks of other materials), so deleting the redirect from [[DF2010:Waterskin]] to [[DF2010:Flask]] would break navigation between article versions. --[[User:Quietust|Quietust]] 21:34, 4 January 2011 (UTC)
