BREWER, Maine — Two businessmen hope to get Brewer City Council approval on Tuesday to open two bars — the Evolve Club & Pub and the Timeout Entertainment Center — at locations that have been problematic in the past.

Public hearings on the two liquor licenses will be held at the beginning of tonight’s regular City Council meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at Brewer City Hall.

A bar at that location, known as the Hitching Post Lounge and Restaurant, was closed last year by councilors who, in July 2008, denied an amusement license for the owner, Leo Cookson, because he failed to teach his employees to identify alcohol overconsumption.

Michael Lucas, who lists his address as 30 Clisham Road in Brewer, is applying for a liquor license for the Timeout Entertainment Center located at his listed address.

The vacant building has been home to a number of bars over the last three decades, the most recent being Babes, The Rocks and the Show Ring.

Over the years, the various businesses housed in the building, which lies at the end of Clisham Road, have been a source of noise complaints from nearby residents.

After the public hearing, the City Council will consider whether to approve the licenses.
