You can find out how deep water is by examining it with the Look command, or by editing your init.dat file to display water as coloured numbers.

Water depth ranges from 0-7, the following is a qualitative description of how deep the water is relative to a dwarf.

  1. Not a true value (you will never see it displayed), there is no water on this tile.
  2. A puddle.
  3. Knee deep.
  4. Waist deep, your dwarves are now wading & water wheels will begin spinning slowly.
  5. Neck height, your dwarves will be coloured blue to indicate they are underwater, and will begin swimming.
  6. Over a dwarf's head.
  7. Very deep.
  8. The tile is full to the brim of water.
