The easiest way to deal with cave adaptation is not to go outside at all. Generally, this tends to be infeasible, since you'll still need to go outside to cut down [[tree]]s.

Curing and prevention of cave adaptation are achieved through the same means: regular, extended exposure to the outdoors, sunny or not. Since idle dwarves will randomly decide to congregate outdoors when it's not raining or snowing, doing this doesn't require much effort. A dwarf who has spent his entire life in the dark will need to spend about 2 and a half months outside in order to be fully cured.

If you make your dwarves spend most of their time west of the [[cave river]] through strategic placement of bedrooms and dining rooms, your dwarves will never become cave-adapted in the first place - even if they need to spend time deeper in the mountain, their occasional visits outside will prevent them from becoming adapted.
