A [[map tile]] is considered '''inside'' when there is any construction or rock formation in the tile above. Normally a construction would be a [[floor]], but could be several layers of [[obstacle|solid rock]], or a [[stairs|staircase]], or a [[windmill]].

Inside is the opposite of [[outside]]. The terms are used opposingly in dwarf fortress when viewing a tile using the {{Key|k}} look at menu. Inside and outside can be combined with [[light]] and [[dark]] as well as [[above ground]] and [[subterranean]].
 
 
 
Dwarves told to stay inside from the [[standing orders]] menu ({{Key|O}} > {{Key|i}}), will only move through tiles marked as inside and avoid outside tiles.
