I've built a successful fortress on a volcano while embarking without ANY items, skills, or animals.  3 dwarves died to volcano creatures, 1 died of melancholy, and the biome was hot enough to evaporate all water.  I will elaborate more if anyone shows any interest.  '''Update''': I accidentally flooded my base with magma.

He wasn't all that impressive, but what made him awesome was during his first battle, he had his left eye torn out by a cougar.  He then proceeded to make all the kill listed above in just a few months.  He never recruited anyone, he killed them all entirely on his own.  See those seven wolves?  He fought them all at once, without so much as a scratch on him.
