Listing your dwarves (and other creatures)[edit]

From the main menu u will call up the unit list:

SCREENSHOT PLACEHOLDER

Dwarves will be listed on the left, by dwarf name and profession name, and the job they're doing will be listed on the right (though the "job" can be things like taking a break, partying, and so on). The dwarves are grouped by profession, with a dwarf's profession automatically determined by his/her highest ranking skill. You can select/scroll with and , and scroll with Page Up and Page Down. Once you select a dwarf, you can zoom in to their location with c, which is useful for finding wayward dwarves, or you can view their status page with v. If a dwarf with an active job is selected then you can use r to try to get the dwarf to stop the job, though not all jobs are cancelable.

In addition to listing your dwarves, the unit list shows tame animals, wild animals, hostile sentient creatures, and anything that's died. Tame animals will have a "(Tame)" after their name and a redundant Tame in the right hand column, wild animals will have a Wild Animal in the right hand column, hostile sentients will have a Hostile in the right hand column, and dead things will have a Deceased in the right hand column. Dead creatures are never removed from the list, so it can get quite long after a while.

While all dwarves and all tame animals will always show up in the list, wild animals and hostiles will only show up if they're known, where "known" means:

  1. On a revealed tile (no line-of-sight from dwarves or tamed animals required). When you first start the game there's plenty of unknown underground tiles, so none of the creatures down there will be on the list. The game starts with all surface tiles revealed.
  2. Not hiding. Thieves, ambushers and some monsters will hide until a dwarf or tame animal spots them, or until they trigger a trap, and until then they won't show up on the list.

However, any creature that died will always show up in the list, even if it wasn't known when it died.

Note that vermin are never covered by the list.

Listing jobs[edit]

Using j from the main menu will show the list of currently active job (one with a dwarf currently tasked to it) and waiting jobs:

You can select/scroll with and , and scroll with Page Up and Page Down. Once a job is selected, v will list any items involved in the job, b will zoom in on the building where the job is taking place (or will take place), and c will zoom in on the dwarf (if the job is active). If an active job is selected you can try to get the dwarf to stop the job, but not all jobs are cancelable.

A non-active job can be in two states, listed as Inactive or Suspended. An inactive job is merely one that no dwarf has gotten around to doing yet (perhaps because none of your dwarves have the relevant labor turned on). A suspended job is one that's been put on hold, either because something prevented a dwarf from doing it (like getting interrupted by a creature) or because you suspended it yourself. To unsuspend a job use b to find its building, q to interact with the building, and s to unsuspend.
