Dangers.
There are dangers to exploratory mining, like, for example, digging down and ending up right next to a troll, watch out for caverns. Other dangers include your dwarves being extremely loyal to you. When you're 20 z-levels down and dehydrated, you might want to get a drink. A possible soulution might be to give miners water skins.
