v0.31:Alcohol

This article is about an older version of DF.

Alcohol is the favored drink of Template:L; a dwarf will drink booze an average of four times per Template:L, and without it they will soon become Template:L. Thoughts imply that dwarves like to have some variety in what they drink. Many dwarves have a Template:L, selected at first randomly from all possible alcoholic beverages, but this might chance once dwarves have been exposed to other beverages. [Verify]

Note that setting booze on Template:L no longer causes it to explode (if it ever did). [Verify] However, exposing booze to high Template:Ls will cause it to boil away, plus the wooden Template:Ls it's in can catch fire and turn to Template:L.

Acquiring Alcohol for your Dwarves

There are three methods of acquiring alcohol, only two of which are available after embark.

  • At Template:L, alcohol may be purchased with embark points.
  • Template:L that visit the fortress will often have alcohol of some sort to sell.
  • The third and most reliable method requires a Template:L, a Template:L, and a working Template:L. Most Template:L can be brewed into valuable alcohol.
    • In a pinch you can also Template:L and brew them at a Template:L in the same way you would with Template:L.
    • Mead does not require any plants to be made, though it does require honey which is made through Template:L.

Variety

He has been tired of drinking the same old booze lately.

Variety in booze keeps away unhappy thoughts, it also keeps dwarves drinking!

For example, if Urist McThirsty drinks nothing but dwarven ale, he'll get unhappy and will stop drinking ale. This might clarify:

Urist McThirsty: Bah, why do we have only ale?
Urist McManager: Because we only have pig tails.
Urist McThirsty: By my beard, Armok and all that's dwarvenly, until I find some booze other than ale, I shall drink nought but water, even if that means slowing this fortress to a grinding halt and causing the death of everyone in it!
Urist McManager: (sotto voce) Armok's vomit-soaked beard! My entire species is insane.
Urist McThirsty: Sorry, what was that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of these shattering masterpieces.

Consequences of a Sober Fortress

As dwarves are highly dependent on alcohol, a lack of booze over a prolonged period of time will result in a loss of Template:L in almost every activity, including basic movement. For this reason, a steady supply of alcohol is highly recommended for any attempts at a productive fort (unless you're a cruel overlord).

Dwarves will also wait longer before drinking from a non-alcoholic water source, resulting in negative thoughts from thirst.
