Locations

It might be useful to add location for 'Linux' and 'Mac' and eventually the 'Steam' release. --Jan (talk) 12:08, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Locations aren't platform-specific. Saves are always in the "data" > "save" folder relative to the "main" DF folder. While the main DF folder may be in an unexpected place in some packs, I believe we should avoid mentioning individual platforms in this section. —Lethosor (talk) 22:45, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
True, currently they aren't, however, with upcoming steam release there will be platform\program specific folder for saves and mods that wouldn't reside in the same places as the game folder. But I removed the info for now until we have more to go on. --Jan (talk) 01:37, 26 December 2021 (UTC)

I assume the note about windows7 (all win platforms?) location is related to program files permissions, does is still happen if one run DF with elevated privileges? --Jan (talk) 21:59, 25 December 2021 (UTC)

Does what still happen? I'm not seeing any mention of permissions or related error messages in the article. —Lethosor (talk) 22:45, 25 December 2021 (UTC)
Win7 introduced some changes to security, including preventing changes to programs in Program Files, which caused some issues for games installed there trying to write save within their own installation folder. I presume the location noted is some temporary location where win7 dropped those files. I believe, but not certain, that is still the case in subsequent win version, not sure if it can be overridden by running df with 'Run as administrator' option. --Jan (talk) 01:37, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
I interpreted "if Dwarf Fortress is installed in the 'Program Files' subdirectory" to be referring to cases where a user chose to put it there. Windows wouldn't put it there automatically, and DF doesn't need to be there. If putting it there causes issues under newer versions of Windows, maybe we should change it to refer to an example user folder instead. —Lethosor (talk) 19:36, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
