Silver bars can be used for fairly valuable goods and as a component for making electrum. Weapons can also be made from silver, but all other metals that can be used for weapons deal more damage.

Silver bars can be used for minting at a metalsmith's forge, creating coins. Minted silver coins can then be used in the economy system, but only a fool would use them for export as they have the same base value as furniture and no quality levels, making them a poor value trade good when trading with caravans.

Silver weapons, like wooden ones, have only 50% the efficiency of iron, making them a safer choice for sparring sessions. And while you have to put up trade with filthy treehugging sandal-hippies elves to acquire wooden weapons, you can make beautiful silver ones yourself. Also, the hippies won't sell you proper weapons like hammers and axes, but only what comes down to wooden poles.
