Miners can use picks as a weapon using their mining skill. If your miner gets into trouble with enemies, try recruiting him to the military (activate him) then he will fight back using his pick. Make sure his weapon is set to unarmed in the military weapons screen.

A pick is a tool used by dwarves to mine areas you have designated for mining. Dwarves without picks cannot mine. Picks can be made from copper, bronze, bismuth bronze, iron, or steel; mining speed is unaffected by what material the pick is made of[Verify], and there does not appear to be a correlation between pick material and ore/stone yielded.[Verify]
