Electrum is a metal alloy made from galena (silver ore) and native gold (you cannot simply combine already-smelted bars of gold and silver). It cannot be produced until the dungeon master noble arrives at your fortress.
Electrum is made two bars at a time, and two bars of electrum are worth exactly the same as one bar of silver and one bar of gold.
