This article is about an older version of DF.

The Bowyer's workshop makes crossbows out of bone or wood. Wood crossbows require one log, bone crossbows requires one stack of bones. For bone crossbows, the size of the stack doesn't matter - if the Bowyer's chosen stack has more than 1 bone, the whole stack will be used to produce 1 (and only 1) crossbow.

Building the workshop or producing crossbows at it require a dwarf with the Crossbow-making labor active. Making bows at the workshop advances the Bowyer skill.

Metal crossbows are made at the metalsmith's forge, but still use the Bowyer skill and require the Crossbow-making labor. The material the crossbow is made of does not affect the ranged damage of the ammo, only how much damage it inflicts if the marksdwarf is forced to use it as a hand-to-hand weapon.
