There are too many character sets on this one page, I propose splitting the page into twopages:
* one for 'classic' code page 437 fonts/glyph sets/character sets with no graphical characters whatsoever
* one for 'semigraphical' character sets which have one or more of the normal glyphs replaced with a df-specific graphic (a barrel instead of the division sign, for instance) - Lord Nightmare 19:18, 9 December 2007 (EST)
:I disagree; there's no reason to split content into two different areas when it's already easily comparable and all in one place. --Maus 09:12, 18 December 2007 (EST)

Why png?
If they all have to be resaved as bmp, why the heck are they uploaded as png? These are small files, you're not saving significant disk or bandwidth by keeping them in png. This is particularly irritating since I can't seem to get any of these to work even after resaving/converting them -.- --Nunix 14:14, 20 February 2008 (EST)

:If you're not just renaming the files, then your problem isn't with the files being .png format. Making an exception to Rule I would only cause confusion as there are many images that are quite large indeed. --Edward 15:32, 20 February 2008 (EST)

::No, it's not just a rename, I'm going into GIMP and doing a Save as... The file size changes, so it's doing SOMETHING, but when I go to use the font the screen comes up blank (but if I hit down twice and enter, I still exit, so everything works, there's just no display.) I hadn't seen the style guide/list, however, so that's fair enough. I'll post on the message boards and see if I can troubleshoot there. --Nunix 16:58, 20 February 2008 (EST)

:::Simple solution: Open the image in MSPaint and save as a 24-bit BMP. If you don't have Windows, then you should have enough computer savvy to do it in whatever program you choose.
:::Also, bmps cannot be uploaded to the wiki.
:::Furthermore, we do actually save significant page size. If those were all bitmaps, that would be a few megabytes, which is annoying to load. Converting to png makes it only a couple hundred kilobytes. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

Length, and how we can decrease it
This page is the twelfth longest page in the wiki. Ten of the eleven pages longer than it are lists. It has forty tilesets, less than a third of which are at all good. This is obviously a problem &ndash; sludging through all forty of those is not at all fun and, for most of it, not at all useful.<br>
As a fix, I propose that we copy this page to "Full list of user character sets" and keep only the best fifteen (or maybe ten or maybe twenty) here. Of course, that brings up the difficult question "how do we determine which tilesets are best?" To determine that, we could try getting as many DF players as we can to tell us which tileset(s) they use. Of course, that would need some rules, a forum thread, etc.<br>
I'll write more about this later, assuming that some interest exists. The time is late and sleepiness impedes thought. --Savok 00:53, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

:To solve Nunix's Why png? problem and to determine the popularity, I suggest we upload all tilesets to Dwarf Fortress File Depot in .bmp format (so nobody have to convert images from .png anymore). Dwarf Fortress File Depot has download trackers for all its downloads. The end of the week, we can determine the 15 most popular based on the download count. Anybody interested can compare the download numbers and edit the 15 best list for the wiki anytime they feel like it to keep it updated often.
:The current tileset Template will need a download bit added to it as well. Plac1d 17:01, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
::I don't think it would work at all. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

::What about making one sub page per tile set. Classify each with 'size', 'shape' and 'style'. Use categories to navigate. Have each character set include a 64x64 pixel chunk of the screen - of these, then use gallery tags to browse with links to the sub page. The why png and link and supporting information for downloads is not a bad idea, but given the small DF playing population, the downloads are likely to be very skewed and cutting off at 15 may remove some very good ones that people have already downloaded and don't see a need to download again. --Shagie 17:52, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

:::I don't think that the tilesets & tileset descriptions are large enough to warrant that. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

Hmn. Perhaps, we could ask all the dwarves on this wiki to submit a list of their top 20 tilesets, roughly in order of preference. If we get consensus on the best ones, that could work. --Savok 10:32, 30 May 2008 (EDT)

: What about splitting the tilesets into separate pages by size, e.g. a page for all 16x16s, another for 12x12s, etc? About favorite tilesets, I could barely name my favorite three, so I think picking a favorite 15 or 20 is a bit extreme, and I don't think we can rely on download counts or people just happening to vote, unless we specifically say that voting is going to determine something. So, what do you think about this idea: First, ask forum-goers to nominate user character sets for archiving (removal to an archive page). Second, after the nomination period is over (say, a week), upload those to the file depot, link to the pages, and give forum-goers a month or so to vote down the character sets they want archived, and to vote up ones they don't want archived. At the end of that time we can check their ratings and archive the lowest-rated ones. --SL 01:37, 21 July 2008 (EDT)

::I think that splitting the tilesets by size into subpages could be handy: Resolution is a key factor in determining usability of a tileset. For instance, I'd never need to use a 48x48 tileset by a user named "AAAAAAAAA", but in our current sorting system, that'd be the first one displayed on the page, for all to see. I must however raise a question about the direction this line of discussion has gone: Do we really want to prune content based on some standard of quality? If so, whose standard of quality? The problems with this page seem to arise from the fact that this page is unusual for a wiki: It's goal doesn't seem to be "disseminate information" as much as "Host tilesets for download". Which is a valuable service, granted, but an unusual shift for a wiki. This different focus in purpose should be considered before deciding to begin pruning. An excess of content and options is arguably a good thing.Teeto K 05:53, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

Now that we have many different subsections here perhaps it's time we took those subsections into separate pages with this page as the central navigation point to those other pages? Would that help? It might be useful so that way each subsection can have whatever explanations are required here, thus important distinctions such as with the tilesets that need different RAWs will be noticed before someone dives into the repository. ::Edit 2: Nevermind, I figured out the problem and now I just feel like a doofus for not recognizing it sooner :p To those who also end up with this problem, here is the solution: you have to set the fullscreen resolution to one your monitor can actually support. Matching the listed res is nice if it works cause it makes everything big and easy to see without stretching it if you have black space off, but if your monitor can't go to 400 Y for example, then you should just go to your current desktop res (in my case 1280x1024) and turn black space on.. == Tileset Transparency ==
So, I learned that 0.28.181.40d11 (And possibly earlier versions) supports png format files natively. I know that pngs support an alpha layer (transparency). I tested how transparency works in 40d11 and was quite pleased with the results. Basically, when you add an alpha layer to the png, the magenta color is no longer considered the 'transparent' color, but this allows you to add shading to the transparent color, like for barrels (which has a black normal color and a brown background color). So, white to black shades the normal color, alpha to black shades the background color. Just wanted to share! Belathus 07:23, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

::That could work...
::*downloads his tileset fifty times*

TarrVetus: Grammar, structure flow, wikification.

Traffic may become an issue once a settlement begins to grow in size. Movement in narrow hallways is slowed by dwarves moving past each other.

Some traffic problems can be prevented by good fortress design, such as making hallway which are likely to be high use double or more width and placing stockpiles close to relevant workshops. Other difficulties may be reduced by designating traffic areas.

Vegetation (saplings) will tend to die in outdoor areas with high traffic, quickly exposing bare soil. This may be desireable as trees block dwarves' and caravans' paths, but unchecked traffic may trample entire areas of forest regrowth.

Setting Traffic Areas
The do combination sets traffic areas, which are zones used to manipulate the movements of dwarves. Traffic areas can be designated as high, normal, low, or restricted. When walking from one point to another, dwarves consider these designations in finding the shortest path. High level traffic costs the pathfinding AI 1 point per square, Normal (default, undesignated) costs 2 points per square, Low costs 5, and Restricted costs 25. You can change these values in init.txt.

* It is often a good idea to set any water source in a biome with seasonal freezing to a Restricted area so your dwarves will be less likely to be caught on it when it melts.
* Some dwarves get disturbed if they walk through a butcher's shop and see an animal being slaughtered, so you may wish to designate the shop as Restricted.
* If an area occasionally gets flooded, or is dangerous for some reason, routing dwarves around it could be lifesaving.
* Setting High traffic areas along roads outdoors prevents vegetation from being needlessly trampled.

Setting Restricted does not forbid a dwarf from traveling over those squares, but rather makes them willing to walk around them &ndash; for the normal cost table, 12.5 times further, or up to 25 times longer if there is an alternative high-traffic path. If you have an area that absolutely must not be stepped on by dwarves, consider walls.

Limitations
Traffic designations only affect path preferences when pathfinding. Dwarves generally choose their jobs without weighing the pathfinding costs. For example, one cannot use traffic designations to direct a dwarf to confine his digging to a specific area. He will still take whatever path necessary to get to the job he has chosen to work.

Additionally, traffic designations cannot be used to restrict where a dwarf will stand when building/digging. In other words, traffic designations will not prevent a dwarf from placing himself on the outside of the fort when the last tile of a moat or wall is completed. In some cases, a workaround is to place a wall where you want the dwarf to avoid standing, and suspend it. This prevents him from standing on that tile while building/digging. When the job is finished, the suspended wall may be canceled.
A screw pump can lift water from below onto the same Z-level as the pump. Its is two tiles by one tile in size, and it can be either manually operated by a dwarf with the pump operator job or by using gear assemblies connected to water wheels and/or windmills. The direction you want the water to travel must be chosen at the time of construction.

Construction
Building a screw pump requires an enormous corkscrew, a stone, wood, or glass block, and a pipe section. The light green X must be next to the water source and the dark green X is where the water exits the pump. Having specified the direction of travel, you must ensure that the source side of the pump is placed adjacent to and above (in the z-axis) a liquid. The screw pump will draw the liquid up from below, and distribute it out of the other side of the pump. Screw pumps are constructions that can be removed to recover the building materials.

Notes
* The source of the pump must be directionally adjacent to "Open Space" that is directly above a filled pool of liquid.
* In order to build pumps in a "hanging" state, as in the stacked screw pump example, the dark tile of the screw pump must be able to connect to a nearby machine; either already existing or designated to be built.
* The rear pump tile does not block creature movement. The front of the pump does block creature movement.
* The front pump tile blocks water flow. The rear of the pump does not block water flow.
* Dwarves must be able to access and stand on the rear tile of the pump in order to be able to operate the pump manually.
* Active mechanisms connected to the pump will automatically start the pump; to prevent this either restrict water flow using floodgates, or put in a gear assembly linked to a lever to disconnect motion.
* Pumps can also be used in conjunction with a water wheel or a windmill to become self-powered.
* Pumps can not push water up additional Z-levels. That is, if you direct the output of a screw pump into a 1-square space surrounded by walls, the water will not "overflow" the walls.

See Diagram 2. This example is from a
Bay12 forum thread.

#Side view of the basic pump unit. Water is moved from the lower floor to the upper; notice how the front of the pump does not need a floor.
#Side view of stacked screw pumps. Power is transmitted vertically through the missing floor tiles under the fronts of the pumps - no need for gearboxes in this design. The screw pump front prevents the water from flowing diagonally downwards.
#Top view of the basic pump unit.
#Top view with walls in place to prevent the receiving area from spilling out. If this is all it needed, these units could be stacked on top of each other, but it's missing one thing - dwarf access. There's no stairs/ramps, and no good place to put them either that wouldn't interfere with the adjacent levels' water containment.
#Solution for a freestanding tower - fire escape! Sure, you could consolidate the up and downstairs into a single up/down stair tile, but I like the zigzag and symmetrical arrangement this one presents. Just build these on top of each other, flipping horizontally each time, and bam. Minimal yet aesthetic multi-level water pumping.
<div float="right">Example courtesy of Reynard of the forums</div>

Yet another example - Automated system
I use this system in conjunction with a river to power the water wheels.

I wanted to be able to pump water up several levels without wasting dwarves on "Pumping". So by using a system of water wheels and gears, and a bit of trial and error until I fixed my leaking problems, I came up with the following solution, where the "1st" and "2nd" levels simply alternate until I reach the desired height.

Digging Plan:

"1st" Level "2nd level" Key
######### # ### ## _ Channel
#X# # #X# _#
# # ##### ### # ##
# _### ### #_##
###_##### ### ####
######### ########

The red gear transmits power vertically, while the other ones give power to the pumps. Switching from up to left (or down to right, the orientation of the <b>L</b> doesn't matter) stops water leaking back down the vertical shaft. A single water wheel provides enough power for about 4 storeys. You will, of course, want to insert floodgates with levers at various locations.

Hooking up to 2 water wheels Key
############

A problem occurs when as the channel fills - as soon as it's deep enough for the wheels to spin the machine activates, sucking water out of the channel and making it too shallow for the wheels to spin, leading to a distinct 'stop-start' behaviour. It just takes time to even out - I suggest filling the channel before starting on the rest of the tower.

Alternative Configuration
A slightly more space efficient version of the above design can be achieved; though, it will increase the complexity of repairs should any component require it. Note that either level may be used as the base and tessellated appropriately.
And yet another example - Automated system
Similar to the one above, but requiring more gear assemblies and more suited for construction, rather than digging. I used this design to pump water up into my 19 level high water tower.
*  gear assemblies
X stairs
</pre>

Keep in mind that the walls you build below will create "floors" on the floor above, so for each Level 1 (above the ground level) you should only have to build 5 floor tiles, and on each Level 2 you need to build 6 floor tiles (one extra for the extra gear assembly). Just keep alternating these designs stacked as desired.

Running a pump with a windmill
First, build a windmill anywhere aboveground (note that it won't do anything yet).

Then, build the pump. The end you selected to 'pump from' will suck water up from the level below, then pump it out of the other end. Build with this in mind. If you want to pump from a river, the 'pump from' end should be on the river.

Both the pipe and corkscrew can be built by a carpenter, (the corkscrew is listed as something like 'enormous wooden cor' if you are using the single-width screen, but hitting Tab to expand the screen should reveal the full text).

Connecting windmills to pumps:

Note that it's much easier if the centre of the windmill lines up with the pump.

# Dig one level below the windmill and put a gear assembly directly beneath the axle (at centre of windmill). The windmill will start turning.
# You're probably going to want to bring your power up to the surface. To do this, dig away from the first gear until the surface is clear above. Place another gear here.
# Connect the gears together using a horizontal axle.
# Get a miner to channel on top of the second gear.
# Build a third gear in this channel. You should now have a turning gear on the surface.
# If you thought ahead, you should only need one axle to connect the surface gear to the pump. A pump can be powered from any side.

I recommend that you connect a lever to one of your gears beforehand. The pump will start pumping as soon as it has power.

You can change stuff around as the situation dictates, but that should get you started.

<small>The pictures aren't lined up - the far right gear in the second picture is the one below the surface gear.</small>

Alternate Uses
Pumps can also be built with no actual pumping in mind but as dwarven exercise machines. This is an excellent method to train haulers for better strength and agility or for future soldiers.
Was just thinking, perhaps one of the links (or sections) on the main page should be a guide to the major changes between last version and this one. Yes, a TON of stuff has changed, but a lot also has not, and a lot of the core concepts are the same... so I would imagine many of us who have played the previous version(s) would love a section where we can see a list of new basics we have to learn, along with links to those things' individual pages... like, z-axis (obviously), mechanisms, fluid dynamics, nobles, elevation/slope, farming... you get the idea. --Cliffjeff 11:43, 30 October 2007 (EDT)
I don't see what harm could come from hosting a German, Japanese, and Russian wiki. It's not like it will interfere with the English one. VengefulDonut, if you want to randomize that for improved quality, you'll need to do it right: Many (most?) of the quotes in the quote archive are in an ARCHIVE: They are bad quotes never intended to be reused. ::::What is the tick? Every few minutes? --Eagle of Fire 08:14, 8 February 2008 (EST)
:::The template checks the time, but the time doesn't update because the server caches the page. It gets a new one whenever the server refreshes it; you can force this by editing the page or by clicking the preview button. Also, I could make it so that one of the quote boxes picks from the newest x quotes. VengefulDonut 10:43, 8 February 2008 (EST)
::::Having a newer quote on the left and an archived one on the right sounds better than a permanent quote on either. PS. Might want to remove a few of them, like the 'palisade' quote. --Jackard 11:47, 8 February 2008 (EST)
:::::The goal of the quote archive was to archive every single quote which ever got to the main page. If you want to thin out only the best quotes, I suggest you use a separate database for that. Even then, how "good" is a quote is very open to interpretation and taste. If I had to remove all the quotes I find bad or unfunny myself, I'd probably remove 80% of the present quotes in the archive. --Eagle of Fire 18:46, 8 February 2008 (EST)
::::::Ok. The right quotebox now chooses from the last 10 quotes instead of from among all of them. If anyone feels like they want to prune out or fiddle with quotes, go for it. :Haha. You don't sound biased at all ;). I figure we can go one of two routes. We can either claim that DF is an american topic, since it's being made in america by an american and the wiki is on an american domain&mdash;or we can say DF is an international topic since people from all over are funding Toady. If it's an international topic, we might as well follow the wikipedia manual of style. Wikipedia has no preference over the variant used, but there should be consistency in each article. The first user who makes an edit which disambiguates the variety being used in the article is considered the first major contributor and all subsequent edits to that article should use the same type of english. If in doubt, we have history pages. I think the reason you see british english more often in the wiki is because we've had a few editors who in their extreme modesty decided british english is superior and changed several of the american english articles over. I've noticed this happening on a few occasions. (please dont do that). VengefulDonut 09:53, 7 March 2008 (EST)
(This is 'cause I'd like to post the log of a battle I had with a particularly clumsy Giant, who slammed into a wall allowing me to stab him in the back of the head for the eventual win. Its no dragon-slaying tale, but I still think its good.) --Wahnsinniger 11:59, 2 December 2007 (EST)
German Translation
I've got requests for either having a German wiki or Namespace. I'd like to have everybody's opinion on this. If you people think that having German (and maybe other languages eventually) translations on the main wiki is going to be annoying, tell me. I can also setup a new wiki on a subdomain (de.dwarffortresswiki.net for example). How would it be best organized? Should I use LanguageTemplates? Is there a need for other additional languages? --Senso 09:31, 17 January 2008 (EST)
:Since Dwarf Fortress is only available in English, if you can play the game, you can also read the wiki. I really don't think a German (or any other language) wiki version is worth the effort.--Siliziumleben 14:22, 18 January 2008 (EST)
::My oppinion also. This doesn't mean we should stop those enthusiam people though. --Eagle of Fire 13:06, 17 January 2008 (EST)
::There's a big difference between understanding a game interface and reading long and complex tutorials, descriptions, discussions etc. I know French people who play this game; they can understand the UI but they use the French wiki for reference. Also, if I decide to use a separate wiki/subdomain, this will be totally transparent to you. --Senso 16:40, 17 January 2008 (EST)
:::My first language, the one I used since I'm born, is French. Yet, I way prefer this wiki over the french one. --Eagle of Fire 10:06, 18 January 2008 (EST)
::::I'm French too, you know. But when I offered to host a DF wiki, I didn't do it in French because I know English is widely used. But I'm still glad that someone else started a French wiki. --Senso 22:58, 20 January 2008 (EST)
I don't see what harm could come from hosting a German, Japanese, and Russian wiki. It's not like it will interfere with the English one. Also, as a student of languages, I would love to read equivalent articles in German and Japanese. --DDouble 22:01, 17 February 2008 (EST)
::I am german and while I can read english books like german ones, I have to agree that being able to use a UI and understanding the finer points in a tutorial etc. are two quite different things. I guess that if the bandwidth of the wiki is no burden on anyone, it could actually lead to an influx of new ideas and players, which is very important for a "community" game like DF. --Caiburn 20:44, 18 February 2008 (CET+1)
Requesting installation of ParserFunctions extension
It would be nice if the ParserFunctions extension was installed (#if, #expr, etc). It would be useful for having templates that exclude parts of it if no values are provided. Note: I cannot find a place for requesting extensions --Aygar 13:00, 21 January 2008 (EST)

:ParserFunctions has been installed. I did a quick test and it works. Let me know if you run into problems. --Senso 11:54, 22 January 2008 (EST)
Quote randomization
VengefulDonut, if you want to randomize that for improved quality, you'll need to do it right: Many (most?) of the quotes in the quote archive are in an ARCHIVE: They are bad quotes never intended to be reused. Also, what do we do when we get new quotes? Do they get put in a database, not to be used till the RNG chooses? --Savok 20:11, 7 February 2008 (EST)
:What would you like? VengefulDonut 20:36, 7 February 2008 (EST)
::I suggest that one quote is permanant, and the other quote refresh everytime we visit the page. So far, I noticed that even if I refresh the page, the same quotes stay. --Eagle of Fire 05:49, 8 February 2008 (EST)
:::A new quote on the left, and a randomized archive quote on the right? As for the refesh: the template checks the time. --Jackard 06:35, 8 February 2008 (EST)
I think what I've set up should be pretty straightforward, but if you have questions I'll be glad to answer them. VengefulDonut 20:11, 8 February 2008 (EST)
Version updates
There's a new version out today, so the version number and release date need changing. Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea how to do this as they appear to use some kind of function instead of being typed in. == "American" English or Rest-Of-The-World English? ==

Just a minor question, while spell-checking articles, I've encountered a few discrepancies between the two, but I usually see the "rest of the world English" more. So what's the official rule here, assuming we're going for a constant? --Snoob 08:40, 7 March 2008 (EST)
::I second sticking with the Wikipedia's Manual of Style for language. And as a note, there isn't a "Rest of the World English." In fact, the language is documented to vary much as the countries that speak it.
::So, how does the Namibian English variant sound to everyone? At least then most of us are at an equal starting point! :P --TarrVetus 11:25, 7 March 2008 (EST)
