You can armor a small list of animals with either iron or steel armor here. This will both increase their defensive as well as offensive capabilities. Quite a lot, actually. You need iron or steel bars and mechanisms for this.

First you need to bring the animal to the kennels. Simply make a pasture on top of the workshop and assign the wanted animals there. You can do as many as you want in one go. Then run the reaction, and one of the creatures will transform into its armored version.

If an armored creature is butchered, it will also create an inedible metal part. These parts can be recycled to gain back a bit of the metal.

WARNING: Armored animals do not breed. Due to game mechanics they would give birth to already armored children. Don't armor all your warbeasts if you still want to breed them.
The Trade Storehouse is needed to unpack special trade goods from caravans. Since the AI is a bit stupid in worldgen, civs wont bring many items wanted. You can order them now in crates, under the misc section with the diplomats. Each crate contains a vast amount of items. Different races have different crates to buy.

Crates are unpacked automatically.

I advise to build this building right next to the Trade Depot. For sake of role playing, functionality and building design.
av
Soapmaking has been moved to this new location.

Create saltpeter from potash and brimstone from gypsum. Both together allow you to create black powder. Each reaction gives you three black powder pouches. These are needed for landmines, guns and even in the expedition system. The Chemist also extracts glycerol from plants or seeds.

Glycerol is the base material for explosives. You need to refine it to nitroglycerin, which can be used for dynamite. Dynamite ammo is extremely potent. If the ammo gets stuck in a target, expect a massive explosion.

WARNING: Explosives and dwarves don't mix well. You might want to build this somewhere secluded, because you never know what will happen. You might also want to surround it with fireproof materials.
You can also train your doctors directly here, without the need for a library. These training reactions require other reagents, like thread, cloth, corpses or bones, and are not as effective as the library training.
(In future this workshop will be used to battle diseases/plagues as well. Keep posted for updates)
Send different groups of your civ to spy, steal, raid, barter or converse with different races. You will need the gear set from the Outfitter for this.

Raiding works a bit different from the rest. It does have lower chances of success, but the highest reward. If your raid was successful, you will also get back your raiding gear. This way you can send out another group of mercenaries. The races in the menu are sorted by difficulty. Kobolds the weakest, Forst Giants the strongest.

The higher skill level your ambassador has, the higher is the quality of your loot.

You receive the results instantly and no actual units will leave the fortress, I cant do this with the modding capabilities of the game.

I ask you kindly to build this Starting Point at the map edge. Just for role playing purposes, so that a dwarf will at least make the journey there, is suspect to ambushes and needs surface access. He also has to carry the crate of loot back to the fortress. You can of course just do this next to your stockpiles, your choice.

The expedition outfitter takes materials and bundles them into a set of gear. You can outfit Diplomats with ink and paper, Spies with coats, daggers and black powder, caravans with wagons and crafts, mining expeditions with picks, candles and weapons, as well as mercenaries with weapons, armor and a catapult for besieging enemies. Bards need instruments and booze of course.

All groups require backpacks and flasks for on the way.

Once you pack a set of gear, you can send a dwarf to the Expedition Starting Point. This building should be build at the map edge, for realisms sake.
Loot from the Expedition Starting Point is unpacked here. The reaction runs automatically.
There are 4 military groups that can be joined in the military garrison. This costs 2500 gold and takes 1 week of intensive training. Miliatry groups learn their associated skills twice as fast as normal dwarves.

*Legionnaire
:Having undergone the garrison training, this dwarf has learned the fundamental rules of war. Legionnaires learn to handle all melee weapons, military tactics, leadership and situational awareness. They are used to pain, have a higher willpower and recuperation then civilians. The legion training also encompasses rigirous fitness exercises, raising their strength.

:Having undergone the garrison training, this dwarf has learned the fundamental rules of war. Guards excel in using armor and shield and learn military tactics, leadership and situational awareness. They are used to pain, have a higher willpower and recuperation then civilians. Guard training raises their toughness as well.

*Wrestler
:Having undergone the garrison training, this dwarf has learned the fundamental rules of war. Wrestler training teaches unarmed combat and doging above all else. They also learn military tactics, leadership and situational awareness. They are used to pain, have a higher willpower and recuperation then civilians, tire slowly and are very agile.
Guilds
Guilds are dwarven castes with higher learn rates then normal dwarves. They learn all skills related to their guild twice as fast. There are 12 guilds in total, you can find more info on them in the "general changes" section.

Joining a guild costs 500 gold and 1 week of time. The dwarf will become a guild apprentice in that time and stay inside the workshop. He will then transform into a full guild member. Dwarves can also switch guilds or leave them.

Miners of the masons guild are more resistant to warpstone and coaldust. They can dig those without dying, at most they get sick from unstable warpstone.

*Merchant's guild This dwarf is a member of the high and mighty merchant's guild. Controlling the flow of tradegoods and money all over the dwarven realm, each wealthy fortress will soon see the merchnt's guild arrive. It's members make excellent traders and bookkeepers, as well as ambassadors.

*Carpenter's guild This dwarf has joined the guild of woodworkers, lumberjacks and bowyers. It's not the most popular guild among dwarves, since the work is mostly outdoors, but the factor that elves hate it with a passion makes more then up for it.

*Mason's guild This dwarf is member of the most prominent of all dwarven guilds, the masons. Working with stone is an age old tradition among dwarven society and the mason's guild has honed this skill to perfection. Members learn masonry, engraving and mining, as well as skills like architecture and archeology.

*Beast warden's guild This dwarf has joined the society of the beast wardens, a group of dwarves dedicated to the training and control of animals. While not recognized as a real guild be dwarven society, they do make excellent rangers, trappers and animal trainers. Building and maintaining insect hivestocks falls under their responsibility as well.

*Smith's guild This dwarf is member of the second largest dwarven guild, the smiths. What they lack in numbers in comparison to the mason's guild, they make more then up with their dedication and skill in metalworks. They constantly tend to their furnaces or ovens and metal seems to bend to their will.

*Jeweler's guild This dwarf has proven skill in the fine arts. The members of the jeweler's guild create the finest tradegoods, be it from gems or glass. They are in constant squabbel with the merchant's guild, which controls the taxes on said tradegoods.

*Craftman's guild This dwarf is a member of the craftman's guild. Most artisans of the smaller industries fall under this category, be it working bone, leather or cloth. The guild even houses the few dwarven scribes and musicians that roam the realm.

*Fisherman's guild This dwarf has joined the eccentric guild of fishers. Founded by the self-proclaimed king of the fishers, this guild is watched with distrust by other dwarves. How is sitting next to water, waiting for the fish to come to you a real profession? Regardless of what other dwarves think, the members of this guild have mastered the skill of the waiting game.

*Farmer's guild This dwarf belongs to the guild of farmworkers, millers and cooks. They handle most of the food production, from planting crops and brewing them, over milking and cheesemaking, to butchery and cooking. A basic, but important factor of every fortress.

*Healer's guild This dwarf is a member of the guild of healers. Mad butchers some might call them, but they do their best to patch unlucky dwarves back together. Enough dwarves owe their lifes to them to establish the healers as a valid, bonafide guild.

*Engineer's guild This dwarf is a member of the guild of mechanics, machine operators and siege engineers. All things technical are governed by them. Without the engineer's guild fortresses would lack pumpstacks, trap hallways and other automated defenses. They even allow intrepid inventors to join their ranks.

*Alchemist's guildThis dwarf joined the ancient guild of alchemists. While alchemy itself is only a shadow of its former self, in these modern days the guild also welcomes chemists, poisoners and herbalists. There will always be fun about when dwarves handle explosives, acids and poisons, so the guild is blamed for most fortress accidents. And justly so, some might say.

*Arcabe dwarf This dwarf bears a spark of magic in him. Either a rare natural occurence or an expansive magical experiment, either way it enables him to dip into the natural powers that surround us all. He can learn sorcery and the use of magic wands.

Conduct experiments to create random items. You can either use seeds to create a random selection of plants, or some raw materials to create a selection of a completely random item. Anything is possible. Try it out a few times, you will be surprised. Maybe its even something useful.

Recreating special items have a small chance of giving you what you want. They can also fail in several ways, maybe starting fires or injuring the researcher.

You need the dwarven rune for the Hall of the Mountain King, the Grimoire for the Church of the Dark Depths and the Tome of Life for the Fountain of Eternal Youth. Clockwork parts are needed for the creation of turrets in your Machine Factory.

You can also trade all these items instead. Either you pay for them in trading, or pay with resources and possible fatalities by research.

The most important part of the building is using the souls of killed beasts to imbue skills into dwarves. Megabeasts butchered in the slaugherhouse will give you a soul, to raise one skill to legendary.
You can also train your doctors directly here, without the need for a library. These training reactions require other reagents, like thread, cloth, corpses or bones, and are not as effective as the library training.
(In future this workshop will be used to battle diseases/plagues as well. Keep posted for updates)
The bonfire has only two reactions. Large and small fires. You need 1 log for the small one, and 5 logs and 1 fuel for the large fire, which will burn for 9 months.

It has plenty of uses however, from repelling invasion by causing a bushfire, cleaning areas, using a dump-zone to pile refuse on a large fire, or even building one down in the caverns, to get rid of critters and vermin. Remember, even moss or the crystal cavern can burn.
Masterwork links
I made a template for linking to large groups of vanilla articles (in cases like Masterwork:Furniture Workshop where things like tables and chairs don't change in Masterwork). For example,

metal
would link to cv:Metal instead of Masterwork:Metal. Just thought you might like to know that, since you're working on the workshop pages. -- 18:12, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
:Actually, I meant for that to be for a lot of links, like the production list here. For individual links, you can just use something like this:
:
cv:Metal

:which is a lot shorter (the pipe hides the cv: prefix). Anyway, links are complicated in situations like this, so don't worry about it too much. :) -- 19:23, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
