Underworld spires are huge slade structures created in times before time. Demons will create these sites as a bridge between the mortal world and the Underworld and rule from their spire, then perform a special ritual with a deity to establish a permanent presence in the world. Underworld spires very often serve as the center of dark fortresses.

The spires constitute, if not are, the main towers of dark fortresses. They can be accessed by an entrance at ground level guarded by goblins, trolls, and beak dogs. Going upwards will lead to the throne room which houses the demon or goblin master. Traversing downwards will uncover several levels of long tunnels with prison cells containing kidnapped children. Below, past the prisons, are incredibly deep, enormous, circular open halls with a series of treacherous, winding stairways and ramps that lead further downward. At the very end will be a strange, purple staircase simply named as the "Underworld Gate". Beyond the portal are the lowermost series of rooms which eventually open up directly to the Underworld, where there will be demons waiting to have fun.

If your character comments on the weather or the natural surroundings while in a spire, they will mention an eerie glow.
Angels
Angels and the vaults they inhabit are created by a Deity after bringing a Demon to the world. They are randomly generated at worldgen like their demonic counterparts, with appearances, arms, and armor determined by the spheres of their creator. The term "angel" is used loosely -- after all, they are sent by deities that knowingly released demons into the world. As such, they are disproportionately associated with "dark" or "violent" spheres like deformity and war, with fittingly vile appearances, but even those associated to neutral or supposedly positive spheres tend to be utterly bizarre in appearance. They come in three categories.

Soldier
Soldiers are sentient humanoid foes, with armor and weapons of of divine metal and clothes of divine cloth. They are much larger than a human, and guaranteed to have "Talented" level combat skills. A vault always contains exactly 25.

Assistant
Assistants are highly randomized bestial angels; though more than a match for most adventurers, they're the least dangerous angels, with low combat skills and no weapons or armor. A vault always contains exactly 50. These have been seen opening doors, although it is not known if this ability is universal or randomly generated.

Archangel
Only a single one of these powerful foes can be found in a vault. They are the size of forgotten beasts and possess Grand Master combat skills, making them often the most powerful single creature in Dwarf Fortress.
Throwing is a skill used primarily in Adventure Mode. The thrower skill determines the accuracy and damage of thrown objects. Note that any object can and will cause serious damage when thrown, including socks, roaches, and even water.

Throwing in Fortress Mode
In Fortress Mode a dwarf who is tantruming may pick up and throw an object. Doing so gives the dwarf experience towards throwing. Otherwise, dwarves will never use throwing in Fortress Mode.

Throwing in Adventure Mode
In Adventure mode throwing is an excellent way to roll the dice before close-combat, essentially giving the chance for the opponent's vital organs or extremities to be damaged (plus any bonus that may come with the damage - for example, sightless monsters or weaponless guards). Furthermore, anything can be used as a weapon. Silt, pebbles, and vomit have been witnessed colliding with opponents with devastating results (two or three handfuls of dirt can take down a wolf, for example).

At the moment, an excellent way to level up your throwing skill is to collect many items and throw them directly under you. This, combined with an endless supply of vomit, soil, or small rocks, can increase your warrior's attributes and your throwing skill to Legendary in about ten minutes. It is unknown whether this will be tweaked in coming releases.

Another amusing throwing bug is that throwing is not proportionate to adventurer strength. A human throwing a dragon corpse a few tiles is perfectly possible, although it may or may not be as efficient as just throwing a weapon.

Most things you throw will do bludgeoning damage, however there are some items that you can throw that do different kinds of damage. Although it's not as effective as using a bow/crossbow, you can throw arrows and bolts and it will do piercing damage (and, as an added bonus, you will be able to pick up the ammunition afterwards). You can also throw things like swords and axes and they'll do slashing damage.

There is even a report that throwing a fluffy wambler can do significant damage as seen here:

The magma forge is a workshop used by dwarves to turn metal bars into useful objects such as weapons, ammunition, armor, furniture, coins, trap components, metal crafts and ballista arrow heads without the need for fuel to heat the forge.

To build a magma forge, you must have magma-safe materials (non-magma-safe materials will not be shown on the material list), an anvil, and a build site where at least one tile directly beneath one of its eight non-center tiles contains magma at a depth of 4/7 or greater.

Note that the anvil used to build a magma forge does need to be magma-safe—normally anvils can only be made from magma-safe materials, but strange moods can create artifact anvils which cannot be used at a magma forge (or, in the case of metals like zinc, at any forge).

Placing an impassable tile of the workshop over the magma will prevent dwarves from getting knocked in and prevent magma creatures from crawling out, possibly baring a building destroyer with an alternate route. While it is possible to construct a magma forge without open access to magma beneath any of its 9 squares, it will not operate (you will be unable to add tasks to the workshop). Note also that, like all workshops, the central tile must be floored, as it is required for a dwarf to use the workshop, and therefore cannot be the square used to access magma (you will be blocked from building the workshop).

In order to build a magma forge, you must have first discovered magma on the map, whether by locating a volcano or magma pool or by discovering the magma sea.

Workshop labors and skills
Several different types of items can be created at a metalsmith's forge; dwarves will need the correct type of labor enabled for each. The labors used at a forge are:

*Weaponsmithing -- weapons, trap components, bolts, and ballista arrowheads
*Armoring (armorer) -- armor
*Metalcrafting -- chains, and everything in the "Other Objects" category (crafts, coins, goblets, studding, etc.), except anvils
*Blacksmithing -- Anvils, blocks, and all furniture except chains.
*Trapping -- Animal Traps.
*Mechanics -- Mechanisms.

Cost of Items
The cost of a weapon or piece of armor in metal bars can be calculated by dividing its material size by three and rounding down, with no item costing less than one metal bar. The exception to this is some types of finished goods, which are created in different multiples from a single metal bar, depending on the skill of the Metal crafter. The table on the Melt page lists the cost of common items and their yields when melted.

A Magma smelter is a special variation of the basic smelter that uses magma as a source of heat, instead of fuel. Like all magma-powered buildings, it is not visible under the Build menu until your dwarves discover a source of magma.

To function, magma smelters must be built with at least one of the eight edge tiles occupying an open space with at least 4/7 magma on the next floor down. Placing the only opening to the magma under the impassable tile of the smelter is a guarantee that magma creatures won't be able to enter the workshop area through the opening, possibly baring a building destroyer with an alternate route.
Note that both pig iron and steel production still require fuel as a source of carbon for the reaction.
