Statues may be built using one stone at the mason's workshop using the masonry labor. Statues may also be built using three metal bars of the same type at a metalsmith's forge using the blacksmithing labor.

You can create a sculpture garden from a statue's q menu. Dwarves will spend time at a statue garden appreciating the statues and may even organize parties there.

Be careful when placing statues, because dwarves cannot move on the same square they occupy. A poorly placed statue can potentially seal off parts of your fortress. Also note that the floor under the statue cannot be smoothed or engraved after the statue has been placed.
Choosing What to Melt
You can designate metal items for melting directly from the Stocks page and the Look interface.

You can also select metal items for melting from any interface that allows you to view the object's description screen. Simply type m to mark the object for melting.
To bring up a individual object description screen when the object is:
* On the ground: Type k, scroll to the object, select it from the list, and type Enter.
* In a workshop: Type t, highlight the workshop, select the object from the list, and type Enter.
* Held by a dwarf: Type v, highlight the dwarf, type {k|i}} to show his inventory, select the object from the list, and type Enter.
* Inside another object: Display the container's object description screen, navigate to the specific object you wish to see, and type Enter.
* In the stocks menu: Type z, hit right-direction a few times to select "stocks" and press return. Scroll to the type of object you wish to melt, type Tab to show individual items (You have to have an exact number or this won't work. See Bookkeeper for how to get this.), scroll to the specific object, and type v to view.

Melting the Items
Items designated to be melted will be left alone until you queue a "Melt a metal object" job at a Smelter or its magma variant. Melting down an object requires the Furnace Operator labour.
A smelter is a type of furnace used to process ore into more useful bars, in a process called smelting. Smelting requires fuel (charcoal or coke). A smelter requires one rock or block to build.
The Smelter is also the place where dwarves take items to be melted back into bars. Smelting a masterpiece item causes the creator of that item to throw a tantrum.

There is also a magma version of this building, which is built over magma. It requires one magma-proof rock or block to build. It does not require charcoal or coke as fuel, although the process of making pig iron or steel will still need one unit of charcoal or coke per reaction, as a reagent.

What are some of the things that dwarfs can make into artifacts? Diabl0658 03:59, 1 December 2007 (EST)
:Any item that your dwarves can craft and has a quality modifier can be made into artifacts. This includes armor, clothing, weapons, all kinds of crafts, furniture, cut gems and whatnot. Notable exceptions include coins(dunnae have quality modifiers), buildings(aint items) and babies(those rascals!). Bars, blocks, raw glass and other such base materials have no quality modifier and cannot be artifacts. I've never seen or heard about legendary meals, drinks and cloth/thread, so I think they can't be artifacts either. Though dwarves will say that they've eaten a legendary meal, when they've consumed a masterpiece meal. Noctis 06:02, 1 December 2007 (EST)

Dwarves in strange moods will create legendary artifacts: unique, "named" items which are of unsurpassable quality (and usually cost). An artifact is the ultimate expression of a dwarf's desires, fears, memories and hopes in art form, and each dwarf will produce only one in their lives (or die trying). Dwarves that create artifact are often granted the status of legendary.
Dwarves drop artifacts in the workshop or in an appropriate stockpile as soon as they are made. They can then be used just like other items. However, be warned that when a dwarf equips an artifact item (as a weapon or armour) he will never drop it, and may even carry around several artifact weapons in each hand0.27.176.38c. Of course, you might not see a champion swordsdwarf wielding eight artifact adamantine scimitars at once as a bad thing.

Artifacts cannot be destroyed unless lost in a chasm. They can be stolen by marauding parties; an artifact lost to you will have a note to that effect in the Artifacts screen.

Construction
Dwarves will use anywhere from one to ten items in their construction. If you view (q) the workshop a dwarf has seized while the dwarf is in it, you can see what materials he or she plans to use (see strange moods for further details).

Usage
Currently, artifacts can be used just like all other items. A dwarf carrying a job item artifact, such as a pick or an axe, will use it to perform that job. A dwarf with an artifact weapon will use it to great effect in battle if drafted or forced to engage in combat.

Quality
Artifact items have a quality modifier of 120×. This is applied on top of the item's base value, its decorations and the value of all materials used in its construction. (From testing, an artifact piece of furniture will raise the value of any room to Royal, for example.)

Artifacts will automatically have one "free" decoration of the same type as its base material. For instance, a "Perfect Ruby" might have "Images of mangrove trees in Ruby". This decoration doesn't consume additional materials: in the above example, only one ruby was used.

Artifacts can range in value from 2,400☼ to well over 100,000☼ (for the curious, the limit is 648,000☼ if adamantine isn't used). Since immigration totals are based on your fortress's "Created Wealth" (and held/worn items count double in the total), expensive artifacts are commonly the driving factor behind how many immigrants show up each year.
Since immigration totals are based on your fortress's "Created Wealth" (and held/worn items count double in the total), expensive artifacts are commonly the driving factor behind how many immigrants show up each year.

In Previous Versions
Prior to version 0.27.176.38b, Dwarves would normally carry the artifacts they create until they died, lost the limb in which it is held, or threw it away in a tantrum.

Drafting them into the military would sometimes have the effect of causing them to drop the artifact, this may be related to weapon assignment [need further research into this]. Once it had been dropped, they would not pick it up again under any circumstances, except for hauling purposes. Any dwarf that creates a heavy artifact (such as a floodgate) would inevitably be slowed down by the burden.

Incomplete Functionality
Artifacts were originally set to have a 5 year timer (possibly varying as much as a few years). When reached, an event will happen (also reported to go down in history), and the dwarf will either drop the artifact, become obsessed with it and carry it around as normal, or become nervous and hide it. The timer is currently bugged and is a great deal longer than normal, so much so that most fortresses may never see such an event unless they have been running a very long time and have managed to keep their artifact-wielding dwarves alive.

A Corpse is a dead body. It could be anyone's body, from a creature to a dwarf, or even you.

All corpses will rot away, eventually. All corpses will leave behind their posessions where they died. Corpses left to rot in an enclosed space, such as your fortress, will emit miasma. After a time, the flesh will rot away, leaving behind bones and a skull.

If the corpse was involved in a fight before death, it is possible for parts of the corpse to be scattered around. Hammerlords and the like are notorious for blasting apart bodies in one swing. Should a corpse be severed from its parts, all the equipment you'd expect to be on the limbs will usually be located where the limb fell.

fortress mode
The corpse of a dead dwarf should be buried. To avoid unhappy thoughts, the sooner it is placed in a burial receptacle, the better. Any dwarf that dies will make unhappy thoughts for anyone it is related to, but left to rot where it is, all dwarves passing by will have unhappy thoughts.

The corpse of an animal can be valuable to your dwarves. When brought to the butchery, a butcher will dice up the corpse into meat, bones and fat. Depending on the animal, raw hide and skulls may also be rendered.

The corpses of enemies will often contain their clothing, armor and weapons, if any. Your dwarves are automatically set to retrieve these items and put them into your containers. This can be a very bad thing in the middle of a siege, as dwarves that not locked away and do not have hauling jobs turned off will walk into the middle of a battlefield to retrieve these items. In addition to locking up your dwarves or turning off hauling, you can also forbid these items to prevent this behavior.

Stone or rock is a naturally occuring solid aggregate of minerals. It sometimes leaves behind material after being mined or collapsing. Other types of minable tiles include soil and sand.

Stone is divided into a few key categories:
* Metal ore: stone that produces metal bars when smelted
* Rough gems: rough gems can be cut, then used to encrust objects and create windows.
* Other stone: Stone that is not an ore or a gem. Few of these have a use outside of items and structures.

Economic stones are types of stone that can be reserved for a special purpose. For ores, this is smelting and for fluxes, this is steel production. Bituminous coal and lignite can be reserved for making coke.

Having created loose stone, many times you'll want to get rid of it or at least move it someplace else. See stone management for advice.

This article is about DF geology and the distribution of stones, and does not contain the specific locations of metal ores or gems.

Main layer types
There are four types of stone layers. The type of layer is the primary indicator of what kind of ore you will find on the map, as well as a sign of volcanic activity.
The types are sedimentary layers, igneous intrusive layers, igneous extrusive layers, and metamorphic layers.
You will also find layers of soil, but these rarely contain much ore.

The primary types of rocks only occur in their own layers. (E.g. you won't find limestone in a marble layer.)

Stones forming entire layers
These types of stone occur as entire layers, containing some veins and pockets of other minerals (see below). If one of the following types of stone is present on your map, it will be listed in one of the biomes on the embark screen.
Other Stone
Stones found on this table will occur as pockets and veins inside their respective stone layers (see above). When your miners encounter one of them, the game will pause and you will receive an announcement; even for the ones that have no use other than to build constructions of unusual colors.

Non-layer stone occurs in these forms:

* Large cluster - An oval that occupies nearly half of a 48x48 block, area-wise. Only one appears per block
* Vein - A sinuous line of the material crosses the block
* Small cluster - A sprinkle of 5 to 10 adjacent tiles. Multiple small clusters of different materials may be in the same block
Geology and real life
The geology and stones of Dwarf Fortress are based on real-world geology and mineralogy. To understand the terms used here, you may want to crack open a geology textbook (a high school one should suffice). If you don't happen to have one close by, the Wikipedia articles for geology, mineralogy, or the terms in question might help.

Small clusters of rough gems can be found strewn throughout the mountain. Cut gems can be used to encrust furniture, crafts, weapons, armor and ammunition, to create windows and as a source material for legendary artifacts. In addition, raw rock crystals are required to make crystal glass goods.

Value
Gems have base value of 3 in rough form, which is multiplied by the appropriate value modifier from the table below. They gain value after they are cut in a jeweler's workshop. Cut gems have a base value of 5. Items can be decorated (encrusted) with cut gems; all such decorations have a value of 10 times the gem type's value multiplier. See Gem cutting and Gem setting. Large gems are a byproduct of cutting and can not be processed further.

Varieties
Gems come in many varieties, with their own color and value multipliers:
Unlike other gems, diamonds can ignite if they come into contact with magma.

Rare Gems
Colored diamonds only occur in clusters of faint yellow diamonds, and star sapphires and rubies only occur within clusters of their peers. Faint yellow diamonds only appear in kimberlite (which itself only appears in gabbro layers) and sapphires and rubies only appear in bauxite (which occurs in any sedimentary layers).
Like working metal, making glass requires fuel, either coke or charcoal at a normal glass furnace, or magma at a magma glass furnace.

Glass has other uses than as a mere gem, as glass can be used as (a rather odd looking) stone for most buildings, such as Tables or Doors. In addition, Glass can be converted into Trap components, such as large, spiked balls or giant axes. Glass trap components have the same weapon damage as wood or silver (50%).

Glass windows can be made at a glass furnace as an alternative to making windows from gems.

Outside of Metal and Wood, Glass is the only readily available material to create Cages out of, as well.
There are two ways for your dwarves to construct ramps. The first is to carve them into the earth itself (see digging), using the ground below or walls of stone, dirt, etc.. The second is to build a ramp out of materials such as stone, wood or blocks or bars.
Be sure to avoid mining out all of the floor tiles surrounding a ramp or staircase above and below it. If you do this, not only will the structures themselves be useless, they'll collapse, both of which can leave your dwarves trapped.

Removing Natural Ramps
Natural ramps can be mined out via the designation menu using the Remove Up Stairs/Ramps selection (d -> z, using the ingame interface). Like the selection says, only upwards ramps can be removed in such a manner. Selecting a downwards ramp in such a manner has no effect. Removing the upward ramp will automatically remove the downward ramp on the level above. The downward part of a ramp doesn't really exist, a creature standing on a ramp tile will be on the lower tile until they move out of the tile.

Removing Constructed Ramps
Constructed ramps can be removed like any other construction via the designation menu using the Remove Contruction selection (d -> n, using the ingame interface). Constructed ramps will leave one stone of the sort the ramp was constructed from.

NateAustin: reorganized the page and added a little clarification on some issues

Crossbows are the only hand-held ranged weapon usable by dwarves. In addition to the metals usually used to make weapons, crossbows can be made of bone or wood.

Ammunition
Crossbows fire bolts which are made from bone, wood, or weapons-grade metals. Quivers can be given to dwarves to hold bolts, and dwarves can also hold bolts in their hands. Thus, a dwarf can effectively carry multiple stacks of bolts. Dwarves will place metal bolts in quivers in favor of wooden or bone bolts.

Training
Scoring a successful hit with a crossbow trains the marksdwarf skill, and a high skill in marksdwarf affects accuracy with the weapon. Practicing at an archery target also improves the marksdwarf skill. Dwarves will not waste metal bolts on archery targets. In order for your dwarves to practice, they must have a steady supply of wooden or bone bolts.

Melee
If a dwarf is forced into melee combat while wielding a crossbow, the dwarf uses the hammerdwarf skill. It is therefore useful for marksdwarves to be trained in the hammerdwarf skill, for example by switching them from crossbow to wielding a hammer once they become a Champion marksdwarf (which tactic also prevents wooden/bone bolts being needlessly wasted by dwarfs who need no further training).

Construction
Crossbows are created in the bowyer's workshop, and the metalsmith's forge, and require crossbow-making in both cases. The quality of the crossbow is added to the marksdwarf skill. The material of the crossbow DOES NOT affect the damage done when firing, however it does affect the damage done when used as a melee weapon.
