=== Description ===

Both pumps are on floors (not transmitting power), each has a gear assembly connected to it. The left plate connects to the top gear. The right plate connects to the bottom gear. Both plates are set for 6/7-7/7 water. One tile full of water is poured into one side. Lastly, power is applied to both gears. If the water starts on the left side:

Left plate is active, top gear is disengaged, top pump is off

Right plate is inactive, bottom gear is engaged, bottom pump on

Water pumps to the right

Bottom pump off

In 100 steps, top pump turns on

Water pumps to the left

Top pump off

In 100 steps, bottom pump turns on

Repeat at step (3)

=== Advantages ===

Always a single tile of water, so no flowing or sloshing

Preserves water and doesn't need a water source

Never breaks the cycle*

Two switches provide an alternating, repeating trigger with no extra machinery

Compact design

Easily extensible base design (see [[User:Hussell/ClockRepeater|Hussell's]] extension, or the general case [[User:MrFake/NStepCyclicRepeater|n-step repeater]])

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Not rigorously tested, but theoretically it can't break.

=== Disadvantages ===

For bridges and floodgates, opening/closing always occurs roughly 200 steps apart (i.e. slow)

For short-trigger devices, device appears to be always active **

Requires power (30+)

Takes a bit of time to build (multiple levels and fill with water)

Requires a minimum of 8 mechanisms, and up to 15+ is easily possible

<nowiki>**</nowiki> Only tested with a door connected to the right plate: the door never closed. It may work better given the right build order. Also, connecting the door (or any short-trigger device) to the left switch could produce better results.

=== Description ===

Plate 1 (just left of pump 1) is connected to gear 2. Plate 2 is connected to gear 3 and so on, wrapping around from the beginning to create a cycle--in the layout above, plate 3 is shown connected back to gear 1. Plate '''i''' in an '''n'''-step repeater is connected to gear '''(i ''mod'' n)+1'''.

This allows for a sequential repeater with any n steps, where n is an integer greater than 1.

I've thought of using this type of repeater myself, but I found that getting power to all the pumps was annoyingly wasteful. Not impossible, but a lot of gears and axles are required. There's also the problem that the signal causes something to open once every N steps, and remain closed the rest of the time, when often the opposite would be much simpler.

Minor points: ''<nowiki>[[User:MrFake|link title]]</nowiki>'' produces a [[User:MrFake|link title]] without the little arrow which means "this is a link to a page outside this wiki" ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page example]). :It takes 2n gear assemblies to provide power and switching, plus axles. It's definitely wasteful. But it's the mechanics behind it that are important. Means to an end and all. Though, I haven't found any good use for this yet besides a delay, which I'm not fond of. I thought about a simple chaser lights setup. You want wasteful, hook the plates to togglers and use a 3-step repeater to get 3 color chaser lights. Extremely wasteful! --[[User:MrFake|MrFake]] 18:16, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Not a few dwarfs lost their lives in a siege due to this gaping flaw.
In the summer of 242, yet another goblin siege arrived. Defenses had lately been strengthened and all interests beyond the walls were cleared away, leaving only a well-defended entrance and these exposed areas to deal with.

=== Description ===

=== Description ===

=== Advantages ===

Always a single tile of water, so no flowing or sloshing

Preserves water and doesn't need a water source

Never breaks the cycle*

Two switches provide an alternating, repeating trigger with no extra machinery

Compact design

Easily extensible base design (see user [http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/User:Hussell/ClockRepeater Hussell's] extension, or the general case [http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/User:MrFake/NStepCyclicRepeater n-step repeater])

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Not rigorously tested, but theoretically it can't break.

=== Disadvantages ===

=== Description ===

Plate 1 (just left of pump 1) is connected to gear 3. Plate 2 is connected to gear 4 and so on, wrapping around from the beginning to create a cycle. Plate '''i''' in an '''n'''-step repeater is connected to gear '''((i+1) mod n)+1'''.

This allows for a sequential repeater with any n steps, where n is an integer greater than 1.
|}

=== Description ===

=== Advantages ===

Always a single tile of water, so no flowing or sloshing

Preserves water and doesn't need a water source

Never breaks the cycle*

Two switches provide an alternating, repeating trigger with no extra machinery

Compact design

Easily extensible base design (see user [http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/User:Hussell/ClockRepeater Hussell's] extension, or the general case n-step repeater)

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Not rigorously tested, but theoretically it can't break.

=== Disadvantages ===

=== Description: ===

=== Advantages: ===

=== Disadvantages: ===
