av

The quarry bush is one of the six known subterranean crops, and as such it may only be grown underground. They can be planted in Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Quarry bushes may be processed at a farmer's workshop into bags of quarry bush leaves, which then must be cooked at the kitchen to be edible. You will need an empty bag to be available for this task.

Processing quarry bushes at a farmer's workshop requires one bag, and will produce 5 quarry bush leaves (and one rock nut) for every plant in a given stack of quarry bushes. Quarry bush leaves will be removed from their bag if taken for cooking while still in a farmer's workshop.

Cooking quarry bush leaves can result in very large stacks of Prepared Food, thus saving space and barrels. In a fortress that relies on selling large expensive stacks of Prepared Food, quarry bush leaves are great filler: a lavish meal made from whip wine and dwarven cheese with two stacks of quarry bush leaves for filler is worth almost ten times more than an easy meal made from wine and cheese alone.

Quarry bushes cannot be brewed into alcohol.

Rock nuts
Quarry bush seeds are known as rock nuts. Although their material definition marks them as being edible raw, dwarves will not eat them.

Rock nuts can also be milled at a millstone or quern into rock nut paste. This paste can then be used in cooking, or pressed at a screw press into a rock nut press cake and a jug of rock nut oil.

Both the rock nut paste and rock nut press cake are cookable and considered a single food category, referred to as "rock nut" in the cooking permissions screen (not to be confused with "rock nuts", the entry for the seeds), the Stocks screen compacted view, and Prepared meal descriptions.

The rock nut oil can be cooked or used in place of tallow to make soap.

To clarify... Quarry Bushes/Rock Nuts present a unique issue to the flow of your farming dwarves.

Rock Nuts -> Farm -> Quarry Bush -> Farmer Workshop -> Rock Nuts & Quarry Leaves -> Cooking
|-> Mill/Quern -> Rock Nut Paste --------------------------------------------> Cooking (higher value)
|-> Screw Press -> Rock Nut Cake ----------------------> Cooking (even higher value)
-> Rock Nut Oil -----------------------> Cooking (very high value) or soap

Thus if you set your Mill/Quern to milling operation and do not control it carefully, this could result in a surge in high value foods at a loss of all your rock nuts, and eventually no nuts to grow more quarry bushes, and eventual starvation. (FUN)

Plant Gathering
Due to a quirk in the Raws, a wild Quarry Bush plant growing underground (not planted) can yield 6 leaves if placed in a Gathering zone. An Herbalist will first harvest a single leaf growth, then collect the entire plant, which can be processed as usual afterwards for 5 more leaves.

Food Value
Thanks to the increased value of rock nut oil as a by product of rock nut processing, the highest potential value of products gleaned from one quarry bush plant is 56 (five leaves at a value of 10 each, plus oil and a press cake).

*Grow time: 500
*Plant value: 2
*Spice value: 10(x5)
*Seed value: 1
*Mill value: 1
*Press oil value: 5
Saguaros are a type of above ground tree. They are a cactus, and grow in deserts. Like the overwhelming majority of overland trees, saguaro rib wood logs are brown and produce brown products.

Saguaros are one of the least productive trees for the matter of wood. Cutting a saguaro generally does not give much wood, 2-3 on average.

Saguaros currently bear fruit for a relatively long period of time. This can be very useful in Adventure mode as the saguaro fruit can still be plucked and eaten long after other shrubs and trees have lost their fruits. In Fortress Mode, these fruit can bee cooked, but not brewed.
Its solid density was determined empirically by DF players, as evidenced in the raws. There was no other public, online source of that information prior to Dwarf Fortress. The Toady One received a "Birthday Artifact" in 2012 made out of Saguaro rib wood, which can be viewed here: http://imgur.com/EPtgt
Royal jelly is a product of the beekeeping industry collected from an artificial bee hive. Royal jelly is stored in jugs, and can only be used as a liquid ingredient in prepared meals. Due to a bug, dwarves may store royal jelly jugs as finished goods; combined with a cook's aversion to liquid ingredients, it is very rare to see royal jelly cooked at all. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though, since royal jelly is only available in single-unit stacks and has the same base value as most other foods.

The contents of a hive with a colony of honey bees that is toggled to "gather any products" will be harvested as part of the beekeeping industry. In order to collect the royal jelly, you must have a dwarf with the beekeeping labor active and empty jugs. A honeycomb will also be produced.

(FUN)

Food Value
Thanks to the increased value of rock nut oil as a by product of rock nut processing, the highest potential value of products gleaned from one quarry bush plant is 56 (five leaves at a value of 10 each, plus oil and a press cake).

Soap is a particularly useful type of bar used for personal cleaning, which increases happiness ("recently took a soapy bath") and lowers the chances of an infection in case they are wounded, and for cleaning wounds in hospitals, preventing infections from developing. It is thus a vital commodity in dwarven health care, and one not traded in caravans: you're going to have to make some soap yourself.

Manufacture
Soap is made of two components, lye and fat (either tallow or oil), and occupies a dedicated workshop, the soap maker's workshop. It thus has a somewhat complicated production process; lye must be processed at an ashery from ash, which in turn must be burned at a wood furnace from wood logs that must first be cut down. Tallow is rendered from fat from butchered animals at a kitchen, requiring either livestock or hunting activities, while oil must be pressed from seeds or rock nuts at a screw press, which first requires gathering up or growing crop and then processing them at the farmer's workshop. One unit of tallow or oil plus one of lye creates a single bar of finished soap.

Hygiene
Dwarves do not require soap to clean contaminants such as mud and blood from themselves - if necessary, they will use murky pools, artificial pools of water, brooks, or a well. However, using soap will often generate the happy thought "recently took a soapy bath". It is possible to construct bath-houses (rooms containing pools of water, a soap stockpile, and perhaps a few nice statues) so dwarves living deep underground need not venture to dangerous cave pools or surface brooks to clean off a little mud or bloodstain. For cleaning wounds and preventing infection after surgery, however, hospitals should be kept stocked with a small amount of soap. Soap will get used up as dwarves wash themselves; the current rate seems to be 1/10 a bar per washing, so each bar lasts quite a while.

Dwarves have an internal "dirtiness" level, which gets lowered when they have a bath, lowered further when they have a soapy bath and slowly builds up over time. This "dirtiness" value is connected to the chance of getting an infection if the dwarf is injured, making soap useful as a preventative as well as treatment.

Soap is stored in bar/block stockpiles with the "soap" option enabled.

A convenient way to keep an emergency stockpile of soap is to use it as a building material for workshops or constructions such as walls. When/if you need more soap, you can deconstruct and get the soap bars back. Since soap in a hospital is reserved for hospital use, this is especially useful in case you start to produce soap before setting up a hospital.

Low Trade Value
With the introduction of multiple types of oil-based soaps in DF2014, it might seem worthwhile to consider soap as an export commodity. However, soap has no quality modifiers when it is created and is, thus, only as valuable as its base oil or tallow (1☼ for tallow soap, 5☼ for oil soap). Since oils already require three separate jobs to create (plant processing, milling and pressing) and soap require another three jobs (wood burning, lye making and finally soap making), it would be more efficient just to export the oil in a jug instead.

Crops (or more accurately plants) can either be farmed, traded for, or acquired by plant gathering. Farming happens at farm plots. There are two types of crops: above ground and subterranean. The seeds of subterranean crops may be brought from the starting embark screen or, with some small luck, purchased from dwarven caravans. Above ground crops and seeds may be purchased from human or elven caravans or gathered by dwarves with the plant gathering labor enabled. Seeds may also be collected by processing the plants or eating them (but not by cooking!). There is a limit of 200 seeds of a given type at a time, after which no more will be produced.

A few of the plants listed below are not strictly crops, as they have no seeds and can't be planted (see note "4", below.)

Most plants can be brewed into alcohols, each plant type producing a different variation, and dwarves do prefer some variety in their drink. Some plants may be eaten raw, others must be cooked first, others must be processed first (by milling or plant processing) before they are edible, and still others are inedible, producing only non-food products (their seeds can be cooked anyway, however). Drinks may be cooked as ingredients in prepared meals, but at least one of the ingredients must be a non-liquid.

All drinks require a spare barrel or large pot for storage, and some other products also require specific containers for storage. Plants can be stored in barrels or without a container; seeds are stored individually or in bags which can then be put into barrels. It may be advisable to have a small stockpile that accepts only seeds next to your farm(s), since dwarves will happily carry entire pots of seeds across the map to pick up a single seed, leading to cancellation spam and irregular planting.

Plump helmets and pig tails can be harvested 25 days after sowing. All other subterranean crops need about 42 days.

Standard Plants
These are the plants defined in the file plant_standard.txt. Standard plants have been changed very little from the previous version; tiles and colors have been upgaded, and brewing, pressing and processing plants to bags have been reimplemented as reactions, which means these options will be unavailable in the workshop if materials are missing.
All garden plants are above-ground, and can grow year-round. Garden plants are defined in a separate file from standard plants, named, somewhat predictably, plant_garden.txt <br />
Unlike standard plants, garden plants will also produce growths - leaves, buds, flowers, pods and fruits.
As a general rule, leaves can be only cooked, buds can be both cooked and brewed. // todo: fill in rest; didn't get that far.
Notes:
:1 This is the value for a stack of 5 units, which is the number rendered from a single plant.
:2 Anything that can be cooked is edible afterwards. Note that cooking leaves no seeds for re-planting.
:3 These plants cannot be eaten/cooked until they are further processed, either by milling or extracting; see "products" column for process product.
:4 These plants cannot be grown on a farm plot as they have no seeds. They can only be acquired through plant gathering (in season only) or trade.
:5 Some products may require processing; see plant page for details.
