I was attacked by these guys in my fortress, and the attacks seemed to co-incide with a kobold raid, are they actually smart enough for diplomacy or was it a coincidence? (around 10 of them, 3 kobold thieves, good practice for my new military) ---Major

It was coincidence they attacked at same time--ThVaz 05:35, 20 February 2008 (EST)

Ouch!
In a recent game, a pack of these raided my outpost very early in the game (before I had moved all my stuff into secure stockpiles). They stole several things, including the rope I'd bought so I could build a well as early as possible. Well, I wasn't going to stand for that, so I activated my entire military (all of whom were novice wrestlers or better) and unleashed them on the monkey menace...

Who then managed to kill one of my dwarves!

Fortunately it was my "miscellaneous crafts dwarf" rather than anyone critcal like a miner/woodcutter/farmer, but it was quite a shock and a setback to lose someone so early on. (Although part of a pattern I seem to be getting lately of losing someone within the first year: first a fisherdwarf drowning (dragged in by a long nosed gar, I think), then this macaque murder, and more recently a couple of fire imp attacks). Iapetus 18:40, 26 November 2008 (EST)

A tip I'd give you for that is to have a Bowyer's workshop and make wooden crossbows, and craft some wooden arrows, this is if wood is plentiful, it can also be done with bone. Crossbows would scare them off more readily I think, I'm not sure on that. As for the topic, the macques would have fluked a kill, by attacking instead of their usual fleeing. Rare, but not as rare as a hoary marmot killing a dwarf, which I have had happen. Goes to show anything can kill when it gets lucky. --Major sephiroth 22:56, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Cuz god knows we need one.

I'm not bringing an anvil, so choose whatever you want, whether it be weapons, pets, skills or personality quirks. Also, vote for a biome or ecozone or whatever you want to be in. I (Smoking Gnu) will be the mayor, so that leaves six dwarves up for grabs. So, after you decide all this, vote on what style this fortress should be played in. Should it be Mad Vigilante Justice Fortress (though this could be dangerous for your dwarves), Steadily Growing Fortress, Evil Armok Sacrifice Fortress, or whatever the hell you choose. Sign up on the discussion page. All right, let's play dwarf fortress.

Dwarves:

The Scourge (Smoking Gnu), Mayor/bookkeeper

Major, smith/jeweller/miner/marksdwarf

Donut, butcher/broker/architect

Savok, chef/brewer

Lordo, fisherdwarf/fish cleaner

Edward, woodcutter/axedwarf

The Traitor (to be sacrificed)

Site:

Votes tally up to scorching volcano with river. The style will be Evil Armok Sacrifice fortress.

Equipment (specified): 20 cats, a pick, a crossbow and an axe

I'm tired of waiting, so let's start.

The Beginning
The Scourge is his title. His name has been forgotten. He stands proud in front of the followeres who have assembled on this faithful day. He coughs, and all fall silent.

"As we all know," he begins "we live in a time of evil. The true God is shunned for lesser spirits and goes unworshipped. Blood has not been spilled in years and I sense that the crimson one will soon place us once more onto his anvil of worlds to be reforged and obliterated. Those who stay true to him are captured or put to death in an organized manner so that it cannot be seen. This angers the Blood God, as he revels in chaos and intrigue. Our culture has become stale and our world obsolete. There is only one thing left to do. We must set out and found a new homeland to entertain the Great One, as none shall survive the coming of the hammer. I have chosen those who have served the blood god well. I can only hope that you faithful ones will come later. The chosen ones are," he lifts a list, "Major, the Underminer; Donut, the Artful Butcher; Lordo, the Reaper of the Water; Edward, the Fleshwood Bane, and Savok... the cook..." he pauses, somewhat embarassed, then continues in his loud tone, "with us, we will bring the Traitor, and he will serve the Blood God well. Blood for the Blood God!"

"Blood for the Blood God!"

Arrival
The Scourge awakes. As he raises his head from the cart, he senses the heat in the air. Around him, the a peaceful, endless feild stretches. This is the place, he knew. As he watches the cats play, he knows that blood will wilt the flowers that grow here. He smiles. The Blood God will be pleased.

Site
The Feilds of Playing, a scorching serene freshwater marsh with a volcano and a small pond. Sorry, but it was the best I could find.

Spearsubmerged
This tale begins in 1051, early spring, no complex setup here, I hit play now and made the wood/stone worker do woodcutting/mining respectivley. My fish cleaner is fishing, and my jeweller is the farmer/butcher(and tanner/leatherworker) and eventual smith of my fortress.

I've started in almost heaven, island in a freshwater lake, heavily forested, and a volcano, the only dangers are one sea lamprey and the typical fire imps/fire men from the volcano. I'll add more every half a year or so, is something cool happens i'll add it then.

I'm off to a very good start, I have located some native aluminium, on 20th Granite, Early Spring. It will be used for noble appeasment.
