Looks to me like the "remove down stairs" option is missing. But if you rewall it ([b] - [C] - [w]), and then designate it for "Remove Construction" ([d] - [n]), that works to get rid of it. Or just rewall it and leave it as a wall. --Peristarkawan 20:44, 29 October 2007 (EDT)
:Ramps don't appear to knock out the ceiling of a tile, whereas stairs do. It looks like the main use for ramps is to provide access for anything bigger than a tile wide, such as a wagon or a group of dwarves, and presumably you'll already have access to both levels involved in the rampmaking.--Xazak 19:38, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
<blockquote>Logs and stone(probably more, not fully tested) can not be transported on stairs, limiting their usefulness.</blockquote>
I dug a few levels underground using the shaft method of up/down stairs and trees chopped down on ground level could be carried into the fortress. So Logs can be moved through stairs. --Mizipzor 11:52, 30 October 2007 (EDT)
Removing Down Stairs (Again)
The above comments are obsolete with the current version as far as I can tell. I accidentally build a down stair where I meant to have an up stair. Constructing a Up Stair on top of it wouldn't build, and neither would Constructing a Floor. So I tried making a channel through it as suggested above, and this did indeed remove the down stairs, however, it still reads as 'Blocked' when I try to make a floor over the hole. Signed up just to ask this. How do I get the stupid things to work? I built down stairs and mapped out an irrigation system for my miners to work out down there and they haven't touched it (been about an in game year, during which they did have alot of free time with no tasks on any level). Additional info that should be provided, how many squares are needed to go down, just one or 3 per level or something? What version were they added in (I used to play a version that had a single level, when you always dug to the east and there was always a river and magma and adamantine). All in all consider that the people you may be informing don't know nearly as much about the game as you do, I have alot of friends that would like this if simple instructions and explanations were provided, but with those lacking theyed probably play like 1 hour, ever. Forgot me tag --Lowlandlord 01:39, 31 July 2008 (EDT)

:Did you build up or up/down stairs on the level below, or just a series of down stairs one below the other? The up and down stairs function as the bottom and the top respectively of a staircase. So build a down stair where you want the top of the staircase to be, an up stair where you want the bottom to be, and up/down ones between them. Each time you press the < or > key moves you to a different level, and you only need a staircase on that level and above or below to get access. So you only need to go down one square per level, unless you want to go down 3 and have a fortress with massively thick floors.
:A "down stair" is not a stair that can only be taken down -- it's a stair that only connects the current level to the one below it. And you always need to connect an up stair to a down stair to be able to travel between levels. So two down stairs won't work. A down stair above and an up stair below will work, or up/down stairs on both levels (up/down stairs will connect to any stairs above or below, and can be used to create continuous stair columns).--Maximus 01:49, 15 November 2008 (EST)
::::It's probably that the way stairs work in DF is inherently counterintuitive. In the real world, "down stairs" means "stairs you are only supposed to take down". In DF, it means "stairs that go halfway down to the next level that only work if paired with another set of stairs coming halfway up". That tripped me up the first few times I built them.--Maximus 18:16, 15 November 2008 (EST)

:::::Yup, that's what I was thinking. Down stairs for where you want them to go down, up stairs for up, traffic flows well and everybody's happy. Part of the reason I was doing it that way was I had seen mention of the danger of up/down stairs and clumsy dwarves falling down them, and I had somehow gotten the impression they won't do that on stairs that are either up or down... Re parallel stairs below; I'd started doing that on my (surprisingly successful for me) current fortress... I got a 20 dwarf immigration and they all swarmed the meeting room where a party had been started, down the stairs and it seemed nobody was stepping on anyone's feet. --Azaram 06:16, 26 November 2008 (EST)

:::Incidentally, dwarves do tend to hug one side of a hallway or the other depending on where they're traveling, due to the way the pathfinding algorithm works. So if you build several parallel stairways (I recommend a 2x2 grid), that helps to eliminate a choke point. It also allows them to sidestep out of each other's way instead of one dwarf having to crawl (literally) past each other.--Maximus 18:16, 15 November 2008 (EST)

Why png?
If they all have to be resaved as bmp, why the heck are they uploaded as png? These are small files, you're not saving significant disk or bandwidth by keeping them in png. This is particularly irritating since I can't seem to get any of these to work even after resaving/converting them -.- --Nunix 14:14, 20 February 2008 (EST)

:If you're not just renaming the files, then your problem isn't with the files being .png format. I hadn't seen the style guide/list, however, so that's fair enough. I'll post on the message boards and see if I can troubleshoot there. --Nunix 16:58, 20 February 2008 (EST)
:::Simple solution: Open the image in MSPaint and save as a 24-bit BMP. If you don't have Windows, then you should have enough computer savvy to do it in whatever program you choose.
:::Also, bmps cannot be uploaded to the wiki.
Length, and how we can decrease it
This page is the twelfth longest page in the wiki. Ten of the eleven pages longer than it are lists. It has forty tilesets, less than a third of which are at all good. This is obviously a problem &ndash; sludging through all forty of those is not at all fun and, for most of it, not at all useful.<br>
As a fix, I propose that we copy this page to "Full list of user character sets" and keep only the best fifteen (or maybe ten or maybe twenty) here. Of course, that brings up the difficult question "how do we determine which tilesets are best?" To determine that, we could try getting as many DF players as we can to tell us which tileset(s) they use. Of course, that would need some rules, a forum thread, etc.<br>
I'll write more about this later, assuming that some interest exists. The time is late and sleepiness impedes thought. --Savok 00:53, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

:To solve Nunix's Why png? problem and to determine the popularity, I suggest we upload all tilesets to Dwarf Fortress File Depot in .bmp format (so nobody have to convert images from .png anymore). Dwarf Fortress File Depot has download trackers for all its downloads. The end of the week, we can determine the 15 most popular based on the download count. Anybody interested can compare the download numbers and edit the 15 best list for the wiki anytime they feel like it to keep it updated often.
:The current tileset Template will need a download bit added to it as well. Plac1d 17:01, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
Have each character set include a 64x64 pixel chunk of the screen - of these, then use gallery tags to browse with links to the sub page. The why png and link and supporting information for downloads is not a bad idea, but given the small DF playing population, the downloads are likely to be very skewed and cutting off at 15 may remove some very good ones that people have already downloaded and don't see a need to download again. --Shagie 17:52, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
Hmn. Perhaps, we could ask all the dwarves on this wiki to submit a list of their top 20 tilesets, roughly in order of preference. If we get consensus on the best ones, that could work. --Savok 10:32, 30 May 2008 (EDT)

: What about splitting the tilesets into separate pages by size, e.g. a page for all 16x16s, another for 12x12s, etc? About favorite tilesets, I could barely name my favorite three, so I think picking a favorite 15 or 20 is a bit extreme, and I don't think we can rely on download counts or people just happening to vote, unless we specifically say that voting is going to determine something. So, what do you think about this idea: First, ask forum-goers to nominate user character sets for archiving (removal to an archive page). Second, after the nomination period is over (say, a week), upload those to the file depot, link to the pages, and give forum-goers a month or so to vote down the character sets they want archived, and to vote up ones they don't want archived. At the end of that time we can check their ratings and archive the lowest-rated ones. --SL 01:37, 21 July 2008 (EDT)

::I think that splitting the tilesets by size into subpages could be handy: Resolution is a key factor in determining usability of a tileset. For instance, I'd never need to use a 48x48 tileset by a user named "AAAAAAAAA", but in our current sorting system, that'd be the first one displayed on the page, for all to see. I must however raise a question about the direction this line of discussion has gone: Do we really want to prune content based on some standard of quality? If so, whose standard of quality? The problems with this page seem to arise from the fact that this page is unusual for a wiki: It's goal doesn't seem to be "disseminate information" as much as "Host tilesets for download". Which is a valuable service, granted, but an unusual shift for a wiki. This different focus in purpose should be considered before deciding to begin pruning.
::Edit 2: Nevermind, I figured out the problem and now I just feel like a doofus for not recognizing it sooner :p To those who also end up with this problem, here is the solution: you have to set the fullscreen resolution to one your monitor can actually support. Matching the listed res is nice if it works cause it makes everything big and easy to see without stretching it if you have black space off, but if your monitor can't go to 400 Y for example, then you should just go to your current desktop res (in my case 1280x1024) and turn black space on.. Tweak to taste. I'm certain others can clarify this better, though :) --KittenyKat 17:47, 2 March 2009 (EST)

Page Split
There are too many character sets on this one page, I propose splitting the page into twopages:
* one for 'classic' code page 437 fonts/glyph sets/character sets with no graphical characters whatsoever
* one for 'semigraphical' character sets which have one or more of the normal glyphs replaced with a df-specific graphic (a barrel instead of the division sign, for instance) - Lord Nightmare 19:18, 9 December 2007 (EST)

:I disagree; there's no reason to split content into two different areas when it's already easily comparable and all in one place. --Maus 09:12, 18 December 2007 (EST)

Making an exception to Rule I would only cause confusion as there are many images that are quite large indeed. --Edward 15:32, 20 February 2008 (EST)

::No, it's not just a rename, I'm going into GIMP and doing a Save as... The file size changes, so it's doing SOMETHING, but when I go to use the font the screen comes up blank (but if I hit down twice and enter, I still exit, so everything works, there's just no display.) I hadn't seen the style guide/list, however, so that's fair enough.

:::Furthermore, we do actually save significant page size. If those were all bitmaps, that would be a few megabytes, which is annoying to load. Converting to png makes it only a couple hundred kilobytes. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

::I don't think it would work at all. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

::What about making one sub page per tile set. Classify each with 'size', 'shape' and 'style'. Use categories to navigate.

:::I don't think that the tilesets & tileset descriptions are large enough to warrant that. --Savok 22:59, 12 March 2008 (EDT)

An excess of content and options is arguably a good thing.Teeto K 05:53, 24 October 2008 (EDT)
::::I'm not sure how CPU cycles and the buffer interact in Vista. Is your FPS low? Perhaps a key is dropping out of the buffer but DF isn't recognizing it due to lag? Or lag might be making the buffer overflow. It might depend on how autohotkey sends keystrokes, I don't know if it simulates a key press or directly input ssomething into the buffer. You could try a small sleep(50), or the equivalent, in autohotkey and see if that helps. Also, make sure it isn't losing focus for some reason due to background programs (although that would be strange) -Gotthard

:::::I think it's a lag issue in DF. I've yet to figure out exactly what is causing lag for me. I think it's pathing with too many dwarfs and too complex of a hallway system over too many Z levels. Also, I think playing very large maps causes me to lag, as well, but I think that's related to the pathing problem and all those other creatures trying to path. It definitely got better in this version, tho. I went back to look for reveal.exe for the older version of DF I play (I've been sticking to the last good version where we still had the original mountain, 23.13.23a), but the file seems to have been corrupted at that place it's uploaded to. Now when I try to use it it says it's not a valid win32 application, and it's a 0-byte file after unzipping. Is there a good version up somewhere else still? --KittenyKat 11:52, 16 April 2008 (EDT)
: <code>warp.exe</code> by itself will list your current cursor position.

I will hold off on trying to say definitively what's up with AuthoHotkey until after the next patch. --Geofferic 03:50, 21 November 2007 (EST)
::::::AHK does tend to do wierd stuff in DF, but most of it is predictable. A lot of wierd errors that make no sense can be fixed by explicitely telling the script to focus on the Dwarf Fortress window, as well as generous Sleep statements. I found while rewalling a 30x30 outline, sleep 100 worked fine for the first two sides but posted about half of the second two. Sleep 150 placed the second two somewhat erraticly. :It's pretty easy to find the addresses for this for new versions. Running the program in the directory with the new version gives you the check= value, and the others are moderately easy to suss. Is there any info on what the offsets (dwarfidpos, critter_start, profession_start) actually refer to? I'm capable enough with finding memory addresses, but exactly what profession_start is eludes me. Even dwarfidpos is a little unclear.

dwarfidpos = Address of Dwarf Race ID
critter_start = Start of Main Creature Vector
profession_start = Offset into Main Creature Vector the array of jobs.
heal.exe does not regrow missing limbs. However, "heal -hurt" on the command line brings missing limbs to red status, and "heal" thereafter restores the being to full health.

I propose a -regrow parameter so we don't have to do this workaround, since if it's possible to bring missing limbs from dark grey to red status it's also possible to grow them back.

Also, when using the -hurt parameter, it still says "059E7210 had 31 body parts healed", when it should probably say "wounded". --JT 17:58, 10 November 2007 (EST)
My leader in my current fortress is also at the same time my legendary crafter and is churning out masterwork items to trader as well as masterwork obsidian short swords in industrial quantity... When I need him to manage work orders or to go trade, I just suspend everything he have to do at the craftdwarf workshop and he go do his broker/trader work.
Does the new version still have the strange mood? It wouldnt be complete without it!

:It still exists, I've had it happen several times now, I went to the archive wiki and copy/pasted the old page.

::Isnt that why the wiki was nuked? To make sure that no old info lingers? Ill put some "verify" in there, I dont think that the bold text is enough for users to understand that some of this may no longer apply. --Mizipzor 06:03, 6 November 2007 (EST)

:::I agree. Although moods themselves don't seem to have been changed in this version, the changes to the stones/ores that they use means that some of the information in this article is no longer true. I'll have a go at cleaning it up when I have the proper time for it, but this wiki definitely needs a 'no copypasting from the archives' rule to avoid screwups like this. If people are going to copypaste old stuff, then it is downright irresponsible of them not to verify the accuracy of the information before committing it to the wiki. --Morlark

I know, I was a huge fan of that little strange aspect of the old one.

I need my dwarfs to make more swordfish bone swords, and i still need some glass weapons/armor

The moods seem to have changed. One of my dwarfs went fey, made a nice hematite mug, and is now a legendary... Engraver. Very wierd, he also had no stoneworking or other craftdwarf skills. But he was a competent mason. This was also my fifth dwarf who took the same craftworkshop, so it's a bit strange. --Soyweiser 17:36, 6 November 2007 (EST)
Hey, I am getting a dwarf who wants "raw...crystal". Help? -- Bovinepro
:Probably wants raw crystal glass. I had a dwarf ask for "raw...green", they wanted raw green glass. Looks like Toady might have moved the glass demands out of the "rough...color" category. Iddq?
::I had a dwarf that wanted some stones, metal bars ,leather and "raw...green", 'rough...color", and "rough[or was it raw?]...crystal" at the same time - he hauled everything(stones, bars, leather, green glass, a generic uncut gem) to his workshop exсept for the last thing. Too bad I'm not even sure that rock crystals exist in this version not to mention my specific location.--Another 05:17, 12 November 2007 (EST)
:::Just verifying, rock crystal exists! Found a tiny pocket of them in some diorite.--Trukkle 14:47, 16 November 2007 (EST)

About the engravers taking over craftdwarf's shops and becoming legendary engravers afterwards is quite true. I recently got a bunch of immigrants, and the engraver that came with them fell into a strange mood before even crossing the bridge on my river. He took over a craftdwarf's workshop and made a basalt scepter, and now he's legendary level in engraving. So yeah, perfect laboratory conditions, he was 100% engraver when he went into his mood and came out a legendary engraver. --Zhang5 17:07, 12 November 2007 (EST)

It seems that no craft skill is required. I just had a peasant go into a strange mood. His skills were: competent marksdwarf; novice wrestler; novice armor wearer. He grabbed a craftsdwarf's workshop and 10 items (3xFelsite, Schorls, Tigereyes, Red Beryls, Giant cave swallow leather, Grizzly Bear Leather, Rough harlequin opals and Ash logs -- guess he has expensive taste?) and churned out an idol in relatively short order. This is my 9th successful mood in this fortress, and I've seen requests for between 3 and 10 items, personally. Since they seem to be increasing in complexity, I've either hit the item cap, or I'm about to break ten :) Doctorlucky 16:34, 19 November 2007 (EST)
:This is consistent with older versions. Moody peasants would become crafters, and 10 items was the cap. The minimum was 1 item -- generally when constructing a "perfect gem".--Maximus 16:55, 19 November 2007 (EST)

I had a miner go into a strange mood, take over a mason's workshop, and make a something that got him up to legendary miner status. In my current fort, I have had 6 artifacts made, 2 of which were actual moods and 5 of which were possessions (I can add, one of them failed and the dwarf became a babbling wreck). My dwarves love to use only one item: an oak door (1 item), an olivine coffin (2 items), a turtle shell mask (1 item and is my cheapest artifiact at 3600), a diorite amulet (3 items), and a perfect jelly opal (1 item). --Penguinofhonor 18:47, 28 November 2007 (EST)

Where to add the info that in my game (.33c) a miner took over a mason's workshop, became legendary miner and then held the artifact in his right hand instead of a pick, which became 'hauled', then droped the pick and then took the pick with his left hand? He can mine after all these. While holding a 667 weight units cabinet in his right hand. --Another 10:07, 1 December 2007 (EST)

I had dwarf Miller, profecienty Grower who had Fey Mood, and he became a Legendary Mason ....
Is it normal ? Feydreva

Maximum number of artifacts
Well, I just got my umpteenth mood, and it resulted in the 16th successfully created artifact.(33b) So that 15 cap thing is clearly wrong. As it happens, this single artifact is worth 754,800, and is an adamantine spear decorated with, among other things, adamantine. For the record, in case this data is important to someone tabulating number of ingredients, my moods in order created the following objects using the corresponding number of ingredients: (Flute, 4; Mechanism, 4; Spear, 3; Millstone, 6; Ring, 8; Chest, 7; Cape, 7; Ring, 9; Statue, 8; Idol, 10; earring, 8; Buckler, 8; Table, 3; Mechanism, 10; Bracelet, 5; and Spear, 8).
clarification on "trade" skills
Are trade skills all the skills that produce items with some level of quality? Mainly I want to know if dyer is a trade skill. And how does that work with miner? I didn't think miner was a trade skill. Maybe someone who knows more than me could clarify in the wiki.
I just got my first artifact. It's worth 2400. The dwarf took one log and made a scepter. -Radtse

:I don't know exactly, we should make a list of the skills we know are not trade skills. I'll start: my brewer/grower once got a strange mood and made a wood item and gained woodcrafting skill. Let's try to only add to the list when we have experienced a moody dwarf with that skill only.--Valdemar 19:36, 27 December 2007 (EST)
