Training with Crossbows, Wooden/Bone Bolts more than preferred
Dwarves will automatically use only wooden or bone bolts, you needn't worry about metal bolts being wasted on practice.

Based on classic DF, bone or wooden bolts will indeed be used to fight if the dwarf doesn't have anything else though, and they sometimes would just coincidentally have a handful of "practice" bolts when they went out to battle thus having a useful backup. Especially nice when they're very highly skilled and 35-45 bolts isn't enough to last the duration of a fight!

Out of ammo
Is it worth noting (on this page) that dwarves will use the hammer skill to bludgeon with their crossbow if they run out of ammo? --Matryx 09:22, 5 November 2007 (EST)

:I think it is, if only to warn that if they run out of bolts while they're fighting something, they won't immediately run back to the stockpile to get more. --Xazak 09:26, 5 November 2007 (EST)

::What triggers them to resupply? They seem to stand around after finishing off their bolts. Do I need to stand them down to trigger the resupply? --Aristoi 19:24, 22 January 2009 (EST)
:::The trigger is setting their military preferences, from the squad menu. I think. Squad chases opponents, I think is the one that needs to be changed. If it is set to chase, they will NOT reload. --Zchris13 20:59, 25 February 2009 (EST)
Xbow material
Do someone know if your crossbow hit harder, or do more damage, when it's made of metal rather than wood or bone in the same way a melee weapon would? --Eagle of Fire 02:42, 28 November 2007 (EST)
:When it is used in melee - crossbow material is important as all other melee weapons. In ranged only material and quality of the bolt affect it's damage potential. Crossbow's quality level is directly added to the soldier's effective marksdwarf skill increasing his accuracy and rate of fire.--Another 13:11, 9 December 2007 (EST)
: Yes it does. Unfortunately it will also increase hammerdwarf skill ;) --Koltom 23:53, 27 February 2008 (EST)
: Interestingly enough, the converse isn't true- target practice at the archery range has had no effect on my hunter's ambushing skill. Article update? LucienSadi 05:45, 11 December 2008 (EST)
::Well, it's to be expected - ambushing is sneaking, marksdwarf is shooting...hunting does both, practice at the range only the latter --Koltom 23:40, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
:::"Hunting" with a crossbow doesn't train any weapon - hitting and killing things with that weapon does. Don't confuse "hunting" with "using a weapon" - the latter is needed at some point, but they are two different processes. Hunting (ambusher) gets the dwarf close without spooking the animal - the weapon is then used for the kill. == dual wielding ==

I set one of my marksdwarves to wield 2 crossbows, and he's currently holding them both in the same hand. Can he use them both like this or does it mean he'll just going to be using one of them? --Tachyon 18:18, 6 August 2008 (EDT)

:Late as hell, but for the record no dwarves truly dual wield in DF. When they carry 2 weapons, it's just in case they lose one in an enemy or it shatters in the middle of a fight. --ThunderClaw 14:59, 3 November 2008 (EST)

::Shatter? Wow, I've never seen that.--Maximus 15:20, 3 November 2008 (EST)
Two-handed?
Are crossbows two-handed when used at range? You'd think they'd be two-handed for re-loading, and one-handed (at the very least, two hands are more accurate) for firing, but I don't know if DF supports this.StrawberryBunny 10:34, 8 August 2008 (EDT)

On a more important issue; will a Dwarf be capable of carrying a shield while using a crossbow in case he was forced into melee? Would he only equip the shield up close? How would it affect his ability to carry bolts in his off-hand?
: I set a team of marksdwarfmen to use crossbows and bucklers at the same time, once. Despite an assortment of available bucklers, no Dwarf ever picked one up to use with his crossbow. My guess is that Dwarfs can not ever utilize their second hand without releasing the buckler, and can't store the buckler anywhere else on themselves. --FJH 01:13, 27 February 2009 (EST)
:: I have two marksdwarves that practice at the range with their crossbows in their left hands and copper shields in their right hands. <s>I cannot get them to pick up quivers however. :::Toady has stated that currently (40d) the two-handed code is broken as intended. Where that leaves us is anyone's guess. But what "you'd think" or what "would only make sense" is right out the window. I do know that marksdwarfs use bucklers, not shields, when they do at all.--Albedo 04:59, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

How does firing up or down affect the range of a marksdwarf? Gairabad 17:15, 10 November 2008 (EST)

:From what I've seen, marksdwarves can shoot up or down with little problem. The range of a marksdwarf is pretty finite anyway, something like 20 squares.--Maximus 17:36, 10 November 2008 (EST)

::The range of a bolt is longer - maybe 30 tiles or more - but a dwarf doesn't open fire until 20 tiles. It might hit something further out by accident. Changes in z-level actually seems to hurt range, either way - firing from a higher elevation hurts range slightly.--Albedo 20:36, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
They do have a quality rating. It's hard to tell for the other question, but it should. Ammo is treated like weapons in most other respects. --Navian 00:55, 22 November 2008 (EST)

I just had to shout somewhere that I can't wait for re-stacking to be implemented, or the quiver fixed as a container, so I never again have to worry about a dwarf charging into combat with a single reclaimed bolt rattling alone in his quiver. --Jellyfishgreen 11:37, 13 February 2009 (EST)
:Do you have any recommendations on what to do with single crossbow bolts so they don't litter the landscape and so that the Dwarves don't kill themselves because they can't count and strategize on the same hand? --FJH 16:12, 20 February 2009 (EST)
::One word: Dwarven_Atom_Smasher --Myroc 16:19, 20 February 2009 (EST)
:::Dont hunt. That keeps littered bolts closer to your fortress (only military). Trade them away. A steel bolt isnt even that cheap.

This is not something you can actually do; What you do instead is tell each dwarf what types of jobs to take, and it will pick its own jobs from all the jobs that need to be done. Here is an elaboration:

You should [v]iew a dwarf's [p]references and [l]abor, in order to see a list of jobs. Select which jobs you want that dwarf to do, and deselect the jobs you want it not to do. For example, if you want a dwarf to mine all the time, select mining and turn off all other jobs (like the hauling jobs near the bottom of the list that are always on by default.) Then that dwarf will only do mining jobs, and as long as you have [d]esignated some area that needs to be mined, that dwarf will take care of it.

Some jobs are generated at workshops. If you [b]uild a [w]orkshop for [m]asons, a dwarf with the Masonry labor activated will put it together for you. Once the workshop is assembled, you can look at it with the [q] key, and select a list of things you want built. For example, if you [a]dd a request for rock [d]oors to the list of things to be done at that workshop, a dwarf with the Masonry labor activated will come along and start making them. If you want him to do it sooner rather than later, be sure to deselect all his other labors besides Masonry (again, especially hauling.)

"Dwarf Cancels Eat/Drink: Resting Injury"
Injured dwarves that need rest will get stuck in an endless loop of switching between rest tasks and eating/drinking tasks until death by starvation. These cancellations will also generate a lot of spam. The origin of the bug is unknown as not all injured resting dwarves become trapped in this loop. There is no reliable workaround in 33c, that is unless Rick's healing utility is updated for version 33c. Placing food or drink stockpiles next to the dwarf's bed hasn't worked for me as dwarves stuck in this loop tend to walk back and fourth as opposed to stay in bed; this also makes them inaccessible to other dwarves' health care. An unreliable workaround is to lock the dwarf down in a room with a free bed, wait him to go to lie down on the bed because there is no food/water availeable and open the door when there are free dwarves and 'thirsty'/'hungry' flag on the lying on bed injured dwarf. If no 'give water/food' job was generated - repeat the above.

This does not always occur, however; in a game with an aboveground town and a nearby river, the other dwarves performed the "Give Water" and "Give Food" orders as normal.

Miners Stuck
(needs testing in latest version)
My Miners, after they mind a floor down and then started mining to the left, stopped and tried to move the boulders that were left behind but when they did they couldn't find their way. What I did was I mined to the right a little then I made two ramps right next to each other, on the lower level, and then I mined to the left. Some stone was present and so my miners tried to move it to the stock pile but they couldn't find the way back to the surface. They were stuck in an infinite loop of not finding there path.

Floating Dwarves and etc
(needs testing in latest version)
Certain situations can occur that will break pathfinding on a dwarf and leave him stranded in the air. Building a stairs to his location doesn't seem to help.

Floating Boulders
(needs testing in latest version)
If you dig an up ramp to a tile with boulders, then remove the up ramp, the boulders may end up floating in midair.
:If you get this you can build a floor underneath the boulder (on the higher level of course) and it fixes the problem.

Rewalling Quirks
# Diagonal rewalling is silently pathblocked.
# Rewalling from the top of a ramp is apparently silently pathblocked.
# Walls made by rewalling start out smoothed, but cannot be engraved.

Optimal pathfinding
When digging an area from two ends (ie. farm from outside river and inside hallway) dwarves sometimes choose to start digging from the other end, causing them to run back and forth, digging just one rock at a time in worst case.

It is also common for digging/item placement to start with the tile to the right of the dwarf, even if the path is closer using another direction. Keep this in mind when placing floodgates or digging out areas where you could paint yourself in a corner.

The Most Dangerous Game
If you have two or more miners digging a channel, they will try to dig it under each other's feet, sending their fellows plummeting into the hole. (If you only designate channels on un-mined squares, this won't happen, as the dwarves seem to mine both levels' tiles out at the same time)

Even a single miner digging a channel can get into trouble. Miners may "paint themselves into a corner" and end up surrounded by channel tiles, unable to remove the last channel tile under their own feet.
:Dwarves can channel underneath them. --Jackard 08:04, 22 November 2007 (EST)

Related but not really: If you ask a dwarf to remove a floor you've built, he will -stand on it- while removing it. Problematic if, say, it's over a hundred-yard cliff, but still a good way to get the sand down covering the floor at the magma forge 6 levels down.

We All Fall Down
If a dwarf goes to remove a floor, he removes it while standing on it, and will subsequently fall down if there's no ground underneath. --Plasma 20:23, 31 October 2007 (EDT)
Startup - Civilization Selection
When you are choosing you starting location, if you move the starting zone on the local (leftmost) map, cycle to the Civ Selection tab (rightmost), and change Civ, the area selected on the left will default to original location and size.
Theft in Adventure Mode
In the 2D version, you had to actually reach the edge of the map to lay permanent claim to your five-fingered discounts, which was fine. In the 3D version, the area maps are seamless, but the game still seems to think you have to touch a seam before you can own your five-fingered discounts, which very obviously causes problems for would-be thieves and other sorts who would just like to enjoy their newfound treasures in peace. Note that it is *not* a bug that you have to walk over to things you purchase in shops and pick them up yourself, despite the behavior being different in just about every other game out there (for those who know not what I mean, other games magically transport that new sword right into your backpack after your purchase, and sometimes even right into your hands). --BDR 08:41, 2 November 2007 (EDT)
Love Conquers All
A chained animal, when they spot their original trainer, will break free of their chains and go to greet him/her. Hence chaining animals is practically useless.

Outpost liason
The npc dwarf that arrives the first autumn never leaves for me. He eventually gets hungry and goes rampage. Although the expedition leader has no other tasks, he seems to not be able to fully complete the meeting with the liason. I discussed this in the irc channel and it seems to be some wierd bug.

The liason is following the expedition leader around trying to talk to him. Atleast in my game, whenever the exp.leader has a idle moment, part of the meeting takes place until he has idled enough times to finish the meeting completely. (edit by: Uberubert)

Apparently it sometimes happens even if the liason finishes the meeting. Best answer I've seen is that the liason forgets how to use stairs after the meeting, so maybe try to keep your noble's office or other meeting place on the "ground floor." (edit by: Rabid Llama)

I had a meeting place outdoors and this still happened. It doesn't matter where the meeting takes place. Assuming you can get the meeting to actually occur - which takes some work - if it doesn't properly conclude, the liason will be stuck. (edit by: Captain Failmore)

Oh, also, for the meeting to even take place or properly conclude, your broker has to have ALL OTHER LABOR turned off. Leave their labors off until the meeting concludes in full. (That is, you've been 'shown the documents' twice and the liaison wishes you well before leaving.) If you let the meeting conclude in full without assigning labor to your broker (who may and probably will wander about aimlessly for some time while the meeting is taking place for reasons I don't know) the liaison WILL leave.

A Time To Wait
Sieges completely do not work, and goblins will just mill around aimlessly at the edge of the map waiting for your dwarves to come and kill them. Toady has said something about the AI for sieges being broken.

Sometimes you can get the goblins to approach by sacrificing a dwarf. Send him near enough for them to notice him, then have him withdraw. Note that if he is a soldier, you need to set the military option "squad stays close to station" for him to withdraw instead of charging the goblins. It may be easier to remove him from the military so that he will flee, but this stands the chance that he will not notice the goblins until he is full of arrows.

Sticky Keys
Sometimes when you are scrolling on the map the keys will seem to stick, and you will keep scrolling forever. This happens when you release a key out of the order in which it was pressed.

Example:
*8
*Shift+8
*Shift
*No key pressed.

After holding the above keys you will continue going up until you press the following or Alt+Tab.

*Shift+8
*Shift
*8

This will clear out the pressed key flag in the game.

:I've found if you merely press the direction key of the scrolling on the numpad this scrolling stops. No need to fiddle with the shift or in what order the shift key is pressed.--Mylon 17:35, 13 November 2007 (EST)
Thawing stairs
I have a brook that freezes in the winter. Awesome. I dug a down-stairs down into it and started diggin about in the ice. When the thaw came, the ice broke up and the flow resumed, but the stairs remained. Unfortunetly, this is on the old version .32a HeckRuler 17:44, 15 November 2007 (EST)

Picky Elves
The elves will not trade for Orthoclase or Gabbro rock crafts because the crafts were once alive, although gabbro and orthoclase are igneous rocks that form by the cooling of magma and were never actually alive. Hence, it's a bug.

Bottomless Waterskin
Whenever my soldiers fill their water from the well, it is always stagnant, even though it's connected directly to the fresh-water brook. They seem to be unsatisfied with this, so they return to the well and fill it again with stagnant water. They continue to do this, and seeing as the waterskin seems to have no limit, they carry around 300+ cups of useless water, which slows them down considerably. It's possible to undraft them and have them dump the flasks, but then I don't know how I can have them carry water around.

Rags and Riches
Clothing is completely bugged, in that as clothes wear out, dwarves will get unhappy thoughts from the fact, without ever doing anything about it. They will occasionally claim new clothes as they become available, but will often simply wear the new clothes over the nasty rags which are giving them unhappy thoughts. It is much better to simply never provide clothes for dwarves and let their clothes rot off once and for all. Dwarves get no unhappy thoughts from being naked, and this stops the constant unhappiness from wearing old clothes.

You and what army?
(fixed in 0.27.169.33b by capping number of dwarves in reclaim squad)
Reclaiming a fortress built next-to/beneath/near a goblin or kobold colony will cause all the items in said monster colony to be counted toward your fortress wealth, and will cause a ridiculous number of dwarves to be spawned in the reclaim squad, often over 150. This would make overrunning the goblin/kobold fort much easier, at least, but is still a bug.
(partially fixed in 0.27.169.33a)
(fully? fixed in 0.27.169.33b)
The first fortress I tried to create resulted in the program's hard crash right after the disembarkment screen. I has manually selected the location (sorry I don't remember it's features) and equipment. I swapped out the anvil for a LOT of items: extra barrels, food, crossbows and bolts. == Multiple Mayors ==
(explicitly fixed in 0.27.169.33b, ability to designate leader was also removed?)
You can end up with multiple mayors in your fortress: One from the expedition leader, and one elected later when the population gets high enough. These positions should probably be seperate jobs, or the elected one should replace the original mayor/leader, and he/she should become 'mayor emeritus' or something.

From what I have seen there is only 'one' active Mayor (whoever is on the noble screen as having the job) but the dwarves retain the title when they are removed from office. I have 6 mayors running around but only one (the current one) does the mayor's work. It's confusing as hell --Gorfob 22:35, 8 November 2007 (EST)

Related to the above issue, mud can be tracked through your fortress by dwarves stepping over it. The tracked mud is treated like fresh mud, and will thus take a very long time to dry. Dwarves stepping over this new mud will then track it elsewhere, causing the mud to eventually take over your fortress. Dwarves stepping onto a bridge will stop tracking mud around, so it may be possible to stop the spread of mud by building a bridge outside of the muddy area.
Too tired to sleep
If a wounded dwarf continually falls unconscious due to their wounds, it will disrupt their sleep, so they eventually go mad of sleep deprivation.
:Should be checked. In 32a, I played with my sherif who was a wounded retired hunter. He kept falling unconscious due to brain injury which never healed, and it really looked like falling unconscious was taken as some part of sleep in itself. I noticed often that unit going to sleep, falling uncouncious, then doing 2-3 other tasks when he waked up and went to his quarter to sleep again. =="Dwarf Cancels Eat/Drink: Resting Injury"==

I also swapped the copper pick out for a steel pick. The fortress was not created in the files. I think it also refused to save the world map, but that might be user error. The next default fortress worked fine. HeckRuler 15:27, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
Hole in a Wall
(explicitly fixed in 0.27.169.33b)
If a dwarf removes a floor that's on top of a wall, the dwarf will get stuck, and the Visualisation reveals that the floor tile of that wall is completely missing. --Plasma 20:23, 31 October 2007 (EDT)
Multiple Mayors

For some reason, blood is constantly 'growing'. Blood from an accident in the centre of the village (wooden buildings) seems to be spreading further and further without dissapearing. --Plasma 20:23, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

Keizo: /* How-to */

In adventurer mode, you pick a race (elf, dwarf or human) and start out in either a town of your race or in a previous fortress you played on. You can receive quests, venture into the wilderness to find caves, abandoned towers and other villages. You can even visit your old fortresses and find whatever riches were left to be guarded by the creatures that fated your fortress.

Your first adventure
Picking a race
When it comes to picking a race, there is difference in skills. Dwarves cannot wear human sized armor, and are somewhat limited in the weapons they can wield due to their size. Elves have a slightly different set of skills. Humans are generally fairly well-balanced, and are the easiest to acquire quests from. Each race fares differently in combat; you may wish to look at the races' pages for the finer details.

Choosing skills
Basically, if you want to start with a weapon, you need to avoid having the most points spent in unarmored/wrestling. If you, for example, choose to start out with most points in swordsman, you will start out with a sword. When you have chosen your preferred set of skills, you can press Enter to embark.

Setting out
If you chose human, you will start out inside the Mayor's house. You will see the Mayor (purple) and probably several drunks. Press k and talk to the Mayor. Press 'services' for a quest. You can talk to the drunks and recruit them to your party for some additional combat aid. Be sure to read the Adventure Mode quick reference or use the help files for more information on the commands in Adventure mode.

Trading
In towns you can find merchants inside some buildings. Talk to them to trade with them. After buying an item, you must pick it up manually from somewhere in the shop.

Equipping your adventurer
After acquiring armor from one source or another, you'll most likely want to equip it. To do this, first make sure it is in your possession--not on the ground. You can then put it on, granted you don't already have too much on that equipment slot already. You can remove or drop inferior equipment as necessary.

Travelling the world
How-to
You can walk around the whole world tile by tile if you wish, but given the size of the world, you might want to consider using another method. Pressing T will let see a very zoomed out map of the surrounding area. Moving about on this map is much faster, as well as it heals your adventurer, keeps him from starving, dehydrating, or getting tired. To exit this screen and explore the area you've reached, press >.<br /><br />
Jumping off cliffs is not normally advisable; however, it is possible to do so by holding Alt while pressing the appropriate movement key.

Finding quest locations
After receiving a quest, you will be able to track its location using the Quest log. Initially it will just give you the location on the Travel map, though a lesser-known feature is its use in finding the cave entry (or other such target) once you're already in the local map. Bring up the quest log again, highlight the quest objective you're after, and zoom to it. It should then provide you with a local map of your current area, complete with a 3x3 box of flashing squares. This box indicates the general location of the cave's mouth. You'll still have to do some searching, but at least it's narrowed down for you. You can bring up this map at any time that you're in the local area of a quest objective.

Visiting abandoned fortresses
If you start an adventure in a world with one or more abandoned fortresses, you can take your adventurer to see the sites of your previous endeavors. When you find one of your old fortresses, you will find that everything is a mess. Items are scattered about, things are smashed up and there are probably new hostile inhabitants that you will need to fend off. Visiting your old fortresses might prove to be rewarding, since you can find armor and weapons you made (if you made any). The best thing to be found in your fortress would probably be any left behind artifact weapon or armor. This is also probably the best (and only?) way to get artifact-quality weapons and armor.

Also remember to check out any engravings you made while in fortress mode. When checking out engravings in adventure mode, they reveal a lot more specific information about the event that is engraved.

Combat
Fighting is extremely detailed in adventure mode! This adds alot of fun in the battle, since there are so many ways to injure your opponents/victims.

Ranged
If you have a bow or crossbow, you can shoot arrows or bolts at enemies. You can also throw anything you can carry at enemies. Ranged attacks are highly efficient when you hit.
To fire your bow or crossbow, press f, and move the marker to the enemy you wish to fire upon, and press Enter. Same with throwing stuff, only press t and choose wich item to throw, then choose the victim.
Note: Throwing is slightly bugged, but in a good and fun way. You can throw captured flies, socks and even vomit if you want, with lethal effects. (Water piercing lungs, flies piercing hearts etc..)

Close combat
To fight a creature by hitting it, you just need to walk towards the creature. Alternatively, you can press A and choose your target. After you've pressed A and are given the list of targets to attack, you can use Enter to choose between a normal attack and wrestling before selecting which opponent you wish to target.
A normal attack will make the adventurer hit the target with whatever weapon he holds. If he is holding no weapon, he will bash with his shield. If he has neither a weapon nor a shield, he will either punch his target or grab a random appendage.
In wrestling, you must spend a few rounds locking the target's limbs to be able to break and splinter them (good times). Alternately, you could try gouging, pinching, or strangling them instead.

Wounds
Your adventurer will get wounded by enemies or falling (jumping) off cliffs. The best (and only?) way to heal, is to press T, and travel at least 1 tile in any direction. Your adventurer will be fully healed then. Read more about wounds HERE.

Tips for survival
Dying is easy in adventurer mode, especially if you've just started out. Following these simple tips will increase your chance to survive, and reach those nice stats and legendary skills! These tips are for the faint of heart only. If you like the challenges of the game, feel free to do the opposite of what these tips say.

<s>Living Shields</s> Companions
If you recruit some members to your party, you will not only gain extra damage output. You will also have someone else to take the damage instead of YOU!
When you first start out, the easiest <s>human shields</s> friends to recruit are the drunks! They are found in human towns inside the tavern with the Mayor (The building you start in if you play a human). They will gladly come with you and block some blows for you. Drunks will usually attempt low-skill wrestling and (mostly) damage-less punches. Don't expect them to last long when you meet that Giant you are supposed to kill.

To recruit someone into your party, press talkk, move the cursor over them, and press enter. Then in the conversation that follows, simply pick 'Join' from the list of options to ask them to accompany you. Children, peasants, the Mayor and Guards don't want any part of this silly adventuring malarkey.

More detailed searches of towns of various races can yield other adventurers with some actual skills. The generally have a single weapon skill (Maceman, Swordsman, Spearman and so on) and some armor appropriate to the wealth of the town they were occupying. You will also find Guards around towns, and while they are combat-capable they will not shirk their duty in order to accompany you on your adventures.

Avoid the impossible
Some things are harder than others. Decide for yourself is this is due to unbalancing of the game, realism or simply to add to the variety of challenges.

Giant Cave Spiders
Unless you are a legendary or better (ok its not possible to go beyond legendary..) bow-/crossbowman, you should at all costs AVOID giant cave spiders!! They shoot a web at you, making you immobilized while they rip your limbs off one by one. Then when you finally break free from the web, and can attack again, you've probably lost your arms while lying on the floor and the spider is about to throw you by your head up into the roof. Cave Spiders bleed to death eventually, but they know no fear nor pain, meaning they will not black out even if you manage to inflict serious damage including severed limbs. They are also capable of surviving red-level wounds to the body and legs and multiple severed limbs for long enough to eviscerate an adventurer. Leave these for the living shields to deal with while you slip out the other way, ideally from the cave entirely, never to return.

Even if you are a legendary projectile weapon user, reconsider attacking a giant cave spider because in the tight quarters of a cave you might be shooting it from stealth when a giant rat or something similarly stupid walks next to you and triggers your loss of cover. The spider would then punish your arrogance immensely.

Arrows
Don't take on quests where you need to kill elite bow-/crossbowmen! Generally, avoid flying arrows! Why? Because bow/crossbowmen have the tendency to see farther than you can. They are therefore able to fire at you from beyond your sight, making it hard to see where the arrow(s) are coming from. You may therefor end up chasing the shooter in the wrong direction, giving the shooter even MORE time to turn you into a pin-cushion. Of course, this is only the case if you manage to survive the first 3-4 arrows, because arrows are BAD for anyone but the shooter's health. Piercing hits like arrows are much more likely to damage internal organs, and while you might shrug off a moderate blunt hit to the chest a similar piercing hit could directly damage one or both lungs or your heart and instantly kill you.

If you do accept a quest against an elite bowman or crossbowman and manage to reach melee range, immediately grapple its weapon, ideally by dropping yours and pulling the weapon out of its grasp entirely before throwing it away.

Training yourself
Gaining stats (strength, agility, toughness) helps alot when fighting. How to best train yourself?

Throwing
While walking around on a creature-less place, you should occasionally press g to check for rocks. Rocks are practically free ammo. When you find a tile with rocks, pick up a lot of them (there are infinite rocks), and start throwing them. You can simply throw them at the tile you are standing at. Every throw will gain you 30 points toward the skill "Throwing", and will after a while increase your stats (Strength, agility, toughness). You will need to throw 600 rocks to reach legendary Thrower (starting with no skill).

Thrown objects are also a cheap way to injure enemies before they reach you if you are a melee fighter.

You can also throw other stuff you find, like flies, beetles, worms, and even vomit. If you have a tendency to chop off enemy limbs, you can even throw these limbs. Killing zombies with their companion's severed heads and feet is always good for a laugh. Iron men are fun, because they leave behind a nice statue for the taking which can be thrown. Arrows and weapons seem to be particularly deadly when thrown, but even the most innocuous or silly items can come up with a kill.

Most thrown objects deal blunt type damage, so they will break and bruise limbs, but arrows and weapons can deal their normal damage types. This is particularly useful to consider when trying for a desperate one-shot kill on a Giant Cave Spider that's about to web you and shred you into little chunks, as piercing attacks like thrown arrows and spears damage internal organs (making them more likely to get a one-hit kill, as an enemy can live through having the outside of their head moderately damaged but not from having the same amount of damage done to their brain) and thrown axes or swords can sever body parts and leave deep gashes (leading to massive bleeding or slit throats).

Bow/Crossbow-skill
This skill trains in the same fashion as throwing. You gain skill per shot, not per hit. This is a more expensive skill to train than throwing because you need to buy (or find) arrows/bolts, but is also a much more deadly skill. Fired projectiles do much more damage than thrown ones, and are also piercing type weapons which can do crippling damage to internal organs. The majority of thrown weapons are blunt and will do much more superficial bruising and bone-breaking damage. Shooting arrows at enemies is fun, because it is very efficient. Sadly, that also goes for enemy bow/crossbowmen. You will often be shot in the leg and crippled by an enemy you can't even see, who will then proceed to shoot you in the face until you die - which won't be very long afterwards unless you manage to find something to hide behind.

Make sure to take extra <s>meat shields</s> companions along with you if you're planning on using ranged weapons, it'll take time before you level the appropriate skill to bash things with your weapon in melee so it's imperative you stay out of the fighting till then. Drunks are particularly useful here, as they love to dive on things and collapse into a massive wrestling pile which you can take pot-shots at. Don't worry, you can't hit your guys. Not that you'd care.

Wrestling
Since melee weapon skills are hard train because not every hit gives points towards the skill, why not train your wrestling? When you are alone with a unconscious creep, why not break some limbs before finishing it off? Creeps are always going to try to break your arms and legs, so having a bit of skill in wrestling will help break those locks a lot. Also, training wrestling is a quicker way to better stats (strength, agility, toughness) because gain points per move instead of per "hit". Wrestling also handles dodging skill which is very handy to have.

Swimming
Having no swimming skill in Adventure Mode is not a particularly good thing if you intend to go near water. Anyone with no swimming skill who falls or is pulled/pushed into water will begin to drown immediately if it is over 4/7 deep, and will also be unable to climb out of water this deep - usually resulting in instant death.

To voluntarily jump into a pond or river you have to Alt-move off the edge of the land. This will present you with a choice of walking out into the open space above the water (immediately and unsurprisingly followed by a one-story fall) or moving directly into the water. To get back out, Alt-move into the riverbank/pond edge.

As long as you have at least some Swimming skill, you will be able to move around in deeper water and will gain Swimming skill for every tile you move. Without Swimming, you will have to find depth 4 water to voluntarily paddle about in with your water wings on for your first skill points. Any deeper and you'll start to drown, any shallower and you can't swim in it. Hit m to set your swimming options.

All in all this makes Novice Swimming an excellent starting skill, as you can (eventually) get Legendary skill simply by swimming back and forth in two squares of water and get lots of stat points in the process. However, this is mind-numbingly dull so good luck with that.

Ambushing
The Ambusher skill is the parent to the Sneak ability, which makes you character move more slowly and stealthily to avoid being noticed. Sneak cannot be activated if an enemy can currently see you, but you can use it immediately if you break line of sight somehow. Sneaking around will increase your Ambusher skill even if nobody is around to see you.

Sneaking is particularly useful for avoiding ranged attacks, as even Novice skill allows you to get within four or five squares of an enemy before they spot you reliably. Standing next to sombody without them spotting you is difficult even with legendary skill. However, even if they spot you moving next to them they will only get one shot at you which is a lot better than the hundreds they would have had if you'd been blundering around in the dark too far away to even see them when they opened fire.

The skill also has a valuable part to play in the noble art of running away. As long as you can get out of sight of all the enemies after you at once - such as around a corner indoors, or ducking behind a tree outside - you can start sneaking and head off in another direction. If your skill is too low however the enemies might be close enough to see you as soon as you try to sneak off.

The most useful part of sneaking is undoubtedly the 'stealth throw'. While firing a missile weapon or attacking in melee will get you noticed immediately, throwing things at people will not. Stock up on dead enemies' weapons, clothing and severed body parts and you can pretend you're some gruesome comedy version of Sam Fisher. You know you want to.

Summary
-Recruit some living spearcatchers<br/>
-Avoid flying arrows<br/>
-Throw rocks/statues/socks/bugs at enemies that still haven't reached you<br/>

Jumping off cliffs is not normally possible or advisable; however, it is possible to do so by holding Alt while pressing the appropriate movement key.

-Train your stats before taking on your first quest-monster<br/>

-Train your stats before taking on your first quest-monster<br/>
It seems that the dwarven economy is now triggered by the coming of a Baron /Baroness. I haven't seen it for myself but it's what I gather from the forums. There also seems to be a bug where all coins minted appear as the same coin type (e.g., copper, silver, and gold coins all appearing as silver) on the economy window. --Keizo
