The monarch is the highest level noble, and also the noble of the highest precedence. Rather than being promoted from within, like the baron, count, and duke, the monarch arrives as an immigrant from the previous capital. A male monarch is known as a "king" and a female as a "queen". Either may arrive with an opposite gendered "king consort" or "queen consort", as well as an entourage that can include elite military dwarves and ordinary workers.

Requirements for a monarch's arrival can be checked by pressing n c after a fortress has reached a certain wealth. It is unclear exactly what these requirements are, but usually a fortress must be a metropolis.

When the monarch arrives, a fortress becomes the capital of its civilization. As a result, it can no longer receive visits from a dwarven liaison, nor can it give goods to dwarven caravans as offerings.

The monarch arrives at the same time as an immigration wave, but has an entirely separate entourage that can spawn from a different part of the map. The monarch's entourage consists of a group of dwarves with Legendary +5 skill in a random weapon (but no skill in Fighter), Accomplished skill in Dodger, Shield User, and Armor User, and the "doesn't really care about anything anymore" trait. This wave will arrive even if you have exceeded your population cap.

It may be that your monarch is an ancient vampire with thousands of kills to his name before arriving at your fortress. Some monarchs have been known to drop dead as soon as they enter the map, especially in older worlds. Kings may also be of a different race, such as an elven king.

Note: It is not required to have a baron or a count prior to the Kings arrival. The king can arrive at any time and you are given no warning until he has arrived.
Blind cave ogres are huge, violent humanoids found in deep caverns. They are highly aggressive and will gleefully destroy anything that isn't a wall or a fortification between them and your dwarves. Blind cave ogres will arrive at your fortress in groups of one to three mayhem-minded individuals, and despite being "blind" they have EXTRAVISION and thus are quite capable of sensing exactly where your doors are. Incredibly, they are able to swim.

You do not want to underestimate these monsters. They are nearly as big as giants, significantly larger than elephants, and can easily kill even the most seasoned of warrior dwarves in single combat. Engage them with traps, crossbows, and large numbers if possible. The blind cave ogre's propensity for destruction can be used against it. If you would like to capture one for use in a cunning plan, lay down some cage traps in a narrow passage guarding access to your main fortress and the ogres will soon be caught. In addition they have been known to equip weapons and armor from dead bodies. An ogre with weapons and armor is significantly more deadly than one without them.

Blind cave ogres cannot be tamed, and are intelligent enough that dwarves refuse to butcher them.

D for Dwarf
Blind cave ogres enjoy updating their fashion while brutally smashing their victims. They can grab your shattered dwarves weapons off of them, but more often then not they grab a fashionable glove or pair of trousers. Then with their new set of duds, start beating their victims ever more viciously. Sometimes these fashionable ogres will enjoy beating a crippled dwarf for months, leaving your other dwarfs in peace. At least till their plaything dies.
Ogres are huge, violent humanoids found in evil plains. They are highly aggressive, able to destroy buildings and strong enough to make short work of war dogs and inexperienced dwarves. Ogres usually appear in groups of 1-3, which can prove a deadly threat to a new fortress. An attack by ogres in the very beginning will make short work of most unprepared embarking attempts.
Ogres are now also seen in sieges, where goblins may bring them instead of trolls, and like trolls they are fully capable of swimming (not unlike their blind cousins). It is interesting to note that a clothed ogre is a lot tougher than a troll; it can often shrug off masterfully wielded, masterwork steel battleaxe strikes.
