So, a Bay12er by the name of Squirreloid offered a challenge to the Bay12 Forums. Using a no skill, no purchase embark, you are to survive with nothing and work from the ground up. I accepted his challenge. This wiki page shall be the log of my dwarves and their amazing works. Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Embarked
We have embarked to the outpost Ekurônor, "Mightydespair"with the group known only as The Mindful Machine, currently consisting of several completely unskilled migrants. Our wagon contains nothing but the wood it was made of and our only animal is a donkey who pulled the wagon for us. As an interesting side note, we have a worshipper of a god of muck who looks like a bat and two worshippers of a god of fish, oceans, rainbows, the rain and trees who looks like a cave spider. I have... *ahem* high hopes for those guys... yeah.

The area is fairly pleasant. The highest point is five z-levels above us and the lowest is two z-levels below. There's a lovely little brook, a bunch of mineral-laden chalk and more trees than you can shake a battle axe at.

1st Slate, 1051
A month has passed. A still and a fishery stand proudly next to a food stockpile and a small farm. Over to the west two dwarves are happily plucking turtles from the water and our bored expedition leader is off to the east engraving a small square of land for... some reason. I realised only moments ago that the single log that I turned into a barrel will mean that I will be unable to make a trade depot. This concerns me greatly and now I have no idea how I'm either going to get more wood or ANYTHING from the trade wagon. This... might be a problem... But, as the Mindful Machine at Mightydespair, we shall overcome these great odds. Somehow. probably just steal all their stuff...

15th Felsite, 1051
Another month and a half has passed in the wilderness. The dwarves are content so far to sleep on the ground, drink from the brook, get rained on constantly and eat berries to survive. The workshops are constantly pulled down and replaced with something else so as to use those two logs that we have. Seriously. Two. I feel almost like we're pretending to be elves out here! I'm not entirely regretting the decision to convert the third into a barrel, because it's constantly filled up with delicious booze. After the discovery of some Rope Reeds, we made a lovely cloth bag and put the other piece of cloth inside it. That's what we call, in the dwarven tongue, othob est hospitals. At least the ground is covered in pretty engravings! All in all, we're surviving. No dangerous creatures have come for us, no picks have struck the earth and no axes have cleft the trees in two. So, we're surviving uncomfortably.

At what point does the bookkeeper require quarters (if at all)? --Shagie 23:04, 4 November 2007 (EST)

:My newbie bookkeeper does not require quarters. --Arrendek 00:26, 6 November 2007 (EST)
:: I believe that the bookkeeper's quarters requirement only comes into play when you have a mayor. Before that, all he (or she) needs is an office. The wealth of your fortress is irrelevant. --Chrispy 08:00, 25 March 2008 (EDT)

:::Most of the time, the Mayor and the bookkeeper are the same person, thus you need an office for that person.--CrazyMcfobo 18:52, 12 April 2008 (EDT)

::::Actually not, because mayor is usually the laziest dwarf around spending all his time gaining noble (talking) skills. Bookkeeper is this lonely nerd spending all his time counting numbers. Funny thing is that all this bookkeeping builds up huge muscles and awesome speed, thus making paperwork best pre-military training ever (for single dwarf). If it was possible to have multiple bookkeepers my entire army would be drafted from clerks. --Someone-else 13:52, 23 April 2008 (EDT)

Infinite Experience Corrected?
I'm using version 33g, it seems that at some point this bug got corrected, the bookkeeper will stop working once he reaches highest precision, and if I appoint someone else to the job that dwarf will also ignore it.

Now, all we need is some code that makes precision slowly decrease over time (personally I would make it a value equal to the amount of stocks the fortress has, and have it decrease whenever objects get destroyed / transformed / sold, and only goes up with bookkeeper work, capped again at the maximum stock level)

--Sergius 12:38, 5 January 2008 (EST)

:Precision *does* decrease over time, assuming you're acquiring new objects. (i.e. attaining highest precision early in a fortress's life where there are few objects will have little bearing on how accurate it will still be much later on when you've got a couple hundred pages of stocks) If you're looking for a simple degradation without changes to the actual items being counted, I don't see it happening, as it doesn't make a lot of sense on it's own. Once a count is fully established, it shouldn't be too hard to keep track of a static amount ;) --Edward 19:57, 5 January 2008 (EST)

::I have played a game for 4 years, got all my bookkeeping finished before the end of year one, and so far precision hasn't decreased one bit, I got the bookkeeper job off, the screen shows "the bookkeeper has done all the needed work for maximum precision" or whatever. And I've been trading like crazy with the caravan all those extra expensive bloody vomit-encrusted goblin giant spider silk socks, the fortress wealth is at least 3x what it was since the bookkeeping was done. --Sergius 14:09, 6 January 2008 (EST)

:::That's odd because I did similar (high, not highest, so I could track percentage to next level) and saw a gradual decrease with my precision. Did you keep a *very* close eye on the precision, and turn precision down to next lower level as soon as highest was achieved? --Edward 17:32, 6 January 2008 (EST)

:::It sounds like your stocks aren't changing that much. You have a Goblin siege and get several goblin socks (not on the books). Then you sell them off... possibly for food/consumables that are processed/eaten, or for few steel items that don't cause as large a hit to your inventory?--Stryc9fuego 14:37, 20 October 2008 (EDT)

:::: In my experience, precision only needs to be changed from maximum whenever a stat has one more number added to it (and even, then, do you REALLY need to know if you created 5 or 9 total wealth on top of your 1,756,350 that is shown before updating?). Basically, though I've seen high precision constantly get updated, maximum precisions stays updated until your food starts going into the thousands or your created wealth (or some other stat) goes into the ten/hundred thousands or the millions (or whatever increases the amount of digits).

: It's been a year since this comment -- is there any doubt that it's no longer infinite? If not, I want to change the main article, which still reads "At the highest precision level, they will continue performing their task even when they have done all the work they need to do." This newbie spent a lot of head-scratching trying to figure out why he wasn't working any more! --phik 15:14, 5 Jan 2009 (GMT+9)

::It's not infinite, but it's quite close to it, I believe. They'll stop working at 100% accuracy, but since any kind of change to the books will knock it down to 99% accurate, even a mildly busy fortress will generate a lot of bookkeeping work when it's set to max precision.--Quil 07:34, 5 January 2009 (EST)
You fire the stone into the wall, which then falls into the trench. As the trench is limited in space, stones start piling up. (Apparently, catapults are no good at doing what they were historically used for - destroying walls... And they fire in flat trajectories - i would have honestly expected stones to travel up z-levels - but having tested catapults with roofs over them, they work, which i find silly but what the heck...). == Ideological point of views ==

Given the endless discussions on the net on what is considered or not cheating (as opposed to modding, or fair use of game mechanics, etc.), I suggest being extra careful of not asserting what is or what is not cheating.

Exploits are distinct from cheating because ...

Some would say

Exploits are a distinct form of cheating because ...

Plus, the justification
Whether a player chooses to make use of an exploit or not depends on their personal taste;
given that Dwarf Fortress is a single-player game, no one is actually harmed when you use an exploit.

equally applies to all forms of cheating (or non-cheating).

I would also stress that DF is currently more of a sandbox than a game with difficult goals, and that players boast more about their devious schemes and grand projects than about winning.

--Aykavil 05:20, 10 July 2008 (EDT)

:Don't forget, many cheaters 'cheat' because they want to find out how particular functions work or to 'test out theories'. Then of course there's the people who cheat to simply save time. These are different from the people who would cheat just for 'kicks'. --AlexFili 05:31, 10 July 2008 (EDT)
:I would say that it's indeed true that exploits are distinct from cheating. Cheating in a game involves breaking the rules; in a computer game, the program itself is "the rules" that one plays by. In fact, in some cases the "exploits" are unavoidable (such as children being legendary in six or more skills before they reach adulthood).

:It's like in gridiron football, if the ball carrier goes out of bounds the clock stops. This can be considered an exploitation of the rules to keep time from running out in the half, but it certainly isn't cheating.--[[User:Gandalf the Dwarf (No, really! ::My attitude toward such things generally revolves around what I imagine the creators of the game intended. In Stronghold 2, for example. I am certain that the creators did not intend players to create gigantic stacks of siege engines coexisting ipon a single point, but last I saw it was the 'best' strategy. That upset me. But it doesn't upset me when someone exploits DF or 'mangles' it with modding. There is very little a player can do to subvert Toady's intent with this game, even with modding, because it's more than just a fuedal economy/fortress defense simulation. I'm all for rules and restrictions in bloodline games, though--cheating and exploitation can be fun, but they almost always ruin stories and make the game less challenging. --Navian 15:36, 13 November 2008 (EST)
Legendary Wrestler (Adventure)
I found a bug in Adventure mode that could be quite readily exploited. I wasn't sure if I just plonked it on the page, or chucked it here, so I'm just putting it here for now.

When strangling anything, you get 10xp for every 'choke'. If you hold down the directional button towards the creature, it will still get choked, but time will no pass, and the creature will never die. By placing something heavy(ish) on your keyboard, you can pretty much leave your adventurer to strangle for about 10 minutes, while you go get a drink. You come back, press Z to check your status, and, whadya know, you are now a Legendary Wrestler.

For reference, I use Windows XP. Don't know if that helps at all.
