Tanning
Adds specific tanning reactions for each animal skin type. You can tan skin, tough skin, chitin, shell, scales or rigid scales, into an amount of leather based on the creatures size. Usually around 2-4 pieces, smaller creatures might give none, while massive monsters give dozens.

Leather
Normal leather can be used for suede(3) or vellum(3) from one piece. Suede is very thin leather, useless for combat, but good for backpacks or quivers. Vellum is used for the library system. Alternatives are papyrus (thatchery) or paper (screw press).

Feathers
Birds leave feathers upon being butchered, which can be used to make quills for writing, or feather matresses for beds.

Upgrades
You can upgrade leather by boiling it in oil to harden it (Equivilent to copper armour), then add bonestuds to the hardened leather to make studded leather (Equivilent to Bronze armour), and then stitch several studded leather pieces together to create lamellar leather (Equivilent to iron armour). Each type will be a little tougher, with lamellar being the best. The oil has a 25% chance to be used up by this process. Studs can be made from bone, vermin or horn/hoof. The same upgrade system in a smaller form applies to shell, scale and chitin (Equivilent to bronze armour). Using 2 units of it you can combine it to one unit of the "rigid" version (Equivilent to iron armour).

Fur/Stomach/Gut/Horn
The newest additions are the tanning of a stomach directly into a waterskin, the making of rope from guts/intestines and tanning a pelt into a fur. A fur is the very same as leather, but also protects from cold. Fur is needed for glacier embarks. If you dont want the fur, you can shave of the hairs to create a piece of leather and a unit of hair thread. Horns can be shaped into a small dagger, for eariest militias.

av
Leather is the tanned hide of an animal, and is a fairly versatile material. Leather can be used to make bags, quivers, backpacks, waterskins, clothing, shields, armor, and decorations, all at a leather works. Leather crafts are made at a craftsdwarf's workshop. Although most of these items can be made from other materials, it is the only sensible option for making quivers and backpacks (the only alternative being adamantine), meaning some source of leather is almost essential for a well-rounded military. Plenty of leather can usually be acquired through trade with dwarves and humans.

Leatherwing bats can be used as a renewable source of leather. A dwarf with the Shearing job can be ordered to 'shear' a leatherwing bat at a farmers workshop producing a single stack of raw hide and causing no harm to the beast.

Small amounts of leather can also be found near groups of cavern-dwelling Animal people. Obtaining leather this way is rather dangerous, as these creatures are generally hostile to dwarves and are often armed with blowguns shooting lethally poisonous darts.

Leather industry
Because it only overlaps in the use of end products, the leather industry is part of the meat industry, not the clothing industry.

Making leather requires a tanner's shop, a raw hide or skin from an animal, and a dwarf with the tanning labor turned on. Rotten hides or skin cannot be tanned. The human and dwarven caravans usually sell various boxes of leather, which can be useful if few butcherable animals inhabit the map. One unrotten hide yields one "unit" of leather - regardless of whether the animal is a kitten or an elephant. The value of the leather depends on the critter it comes from; leather made from the skins of rare or dangerous animals can be quite valuable. Tanners turn a skin from severed part of an animal into the full-size leather.

Dwarven tanners have a skill unknown to mere humans in that they can make the softest skin of the tiniest animal equally hardy as that of the most heavily protected live creature. Whether they make flimsy skin into a rock-like substance or tough hide silky and supple remains a mystery.

Improving Leather
A dwarf with the Tanning labour can improve leather at a tannery using oil to produce Tough Leather. Tough leather can then be further improved using studs made of either Vermin, teeth or horn. Studded leather can then be improved a final time by taking several peices of studded leather and stiching them together with any thread producing Lamellar Leather.

Skin is a tissue layer common to most creatures. Different types of creatures have different types of skin.
* Most mundane creatures have raw hide, which displays in-game as skin. This is the only type that can be tanned into leather.
* Insectoids creatures have Chitin.
* Reptilian creatures and fish generally have Scales.

All skin types are stored in a refuse stockpile (both fresh and rotten).

Skin uses
Raw skin, Chitin and Scales can be processed at a Tanner by a dwarf with the Tanning labor enabled in order to produce Leather, Chitin and Scale respectivly. If skins are not tanned automatically, try using your manager to manually queue "Tan a Hide" jobs.

Brewing at the Brewery functions largely the same as at a still with the added functionallity of being able to choose what plant to use and producing an extra five units of alcohol per plant. To counterbalance this, the Alcohol produced will be split across two barrels.
You can also use a barrel of blood to produce a single barrel of Bloodwine with a base value of 15.
Using a single barrel of alcohol, a barrel of oil and a stack of tallow you can produce three bars of fuel. This is expensive, but very usefull on embarks with little wood or coal.
Cutting wood
Only needing a block to be build, this workshop should be constructed early. It automatically queues reactions for smoothing rough wood logs and cutting gnarled roots. Both reactions have a 10% chance to produce a pile of sawdust or tree acorns. Acorns allow trees to be planted in farmplots, and sawdust allows the making of plywood. Both require the Sawmill. If you dislike having the sawdust around, a free reaction can clean/destroy it for you.

Cutting logs into planks gives you 4 wooden blocks that can be used in constructions, but not in workshops. Good for walls and floors.
Mithril is a metal found through stone in relatively high elevations. Mithril is fully forge-able and smelt-able. It can be crafted into anything copper can from boots to crowns to chopping axes. The elven caravan also arrives with mithril bars and a plethora of mithril items such as mithril cages and mithril daggers. Mitril has been found as high as height level 4 or as long as 14 (by myself so far). Mithril can also be used in many great forge recipes to produce other superior metals. Notably,Welded Mithril and Volcanic.
