Contaminants are a new feature introduced with 0.31.01. There are five known types of contaminants in Dwarf Fortress which are mud, blood, (stone) dust, vomit, and snow.

Creating Mud
Any time a tile is covered in water mud will be created on that tile. Mud is usually necessary before doing any kind of Agriculture.

Tracking
With the creating of this new contaminants system dwarf and other creature that walk over contaminants can track them onto other tiles that they pass through. Dustings and spatterings which represent small amounts of a contaminant do not appear to be tracked around. Larger amounts of contaminants will be picked up by a dwarves left foot and can then be transferred to other tiles.

Flowing
Water that flow over contaminants can pick them up and redistribute them as the water moves. Water does not appear to move mud, although mud will be created any time water covers a tile. The mechanics of redistributing contaminants using water is not well understood although there have been some observations of strange behavior when mixing blood and water.
:* adding 7/7 water on top of a pool of blood creates more pools of blood at the edge of the water as it moves and evaporates.
:* an overflowing reservoir that contains some blood creates blood everywhere the water flows.
:* water will create mud on any non-muddy tile, and moving water will frequently redistribute the mud.

avhuman

Magma-safe materials are materials which will not melt, burn or evaporate when in close contact with magma. Most frequently, this comes into play when using floodgates operated by mechanisms.

In order to construct mechanisms from a magma-safe stone, simply ensure that they are the closest available stone to your mechanic, ideally by placing a restricted stockpile around your mechanic's workshop.

When linking a trigger to an object, the first mechanism selected is attached to the object, and the second is attached to the trigger. Unless the trigger itself will be submerged in magma (as could be the case with a pressure plate), only the first mechanism (attached to the object that will be submerged) need be magma-safe. If you do not have any magma-safe stones available, you can also work around floodgate-based flow control by using screw pumps to pump the magma over wall-barriers, or using water to form obsidian to plug flows and channel through them to reopen them (necessity and invention and all that).

Constructions that resist magma are:

* Constructions (Wall, Floor, Ramp, and Stairs) of any material can never melt or burn - there is nothing wrong with a wooden magma reservoir. Natural (but not constructed) ice walls/floors/ramps/stairs may melt however.
* Fortifications will allow the passage of magma, but not the assorted magma creatures. Fire snakes are vermin, so they can spawn anywhere near the magma. They are not affected by fortifications, grates, or even solid walls. Also, there is a bug with fluids which may sometimes let magma (and water) push living things through barriers such as fortifications, bars and grates. Pumps are a positive defense, but can change the dynamics of fluid pressure.
* If not submerged (that is, not opened to let magma flow over/past/around them), doors, floodgates, and raised bridges (provided that there is no magma on the space the bridge would occupy when lowered) of non-magma-safe stone or metal are safe. So long as they are just in contact with magma, only acting as a passive "wall", they are fine. If opened, they will melt.
** Raised drawbridges have a notable exception, in that allowing magma to flow over the area that the bridge would normally occupy when lowered will cause the bridge's components to heat up and potentially melt.
* All parts of a pump, except for the passable tile, provided that none of the components are made of wood. Glass pipes and screws are magma-safe as parts of a pump.

<!-- NEED TO RECHECK THIS!

Glass
Glass behaves oddly in regards to magma. Glass is, in itself, not magma safe; glass instruments will melt in magma. However, glass furniture will not. So glass statues, screw pumps, and floodgates are all fine when submerged in magma. Forum link with experiments: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=27423.msg333562#msg333562

Glass barriers still require magma-proof mechanisms to operate without deconstructing.

-->

Game calculations
In the game, magma's temperature is exactly 2,032°F, or about 1,111°C. This is also 12,000° Temperature scale.

Magma-safe material
The following materials will not melt when submerged in magma. Although true for any item/construction, it's worth specifically mentioning that this includes doors, hatches, floodgates, bridges, pumps and mechanisms.
Notes:
:1. Each stone is one of 16 color scheme in the game. Different un-mined stone of the same color have a different symbol to distinguish between them. Once mined, the individual stones themselves can sometimes look identical if the color is the same. Use k to look at items or the terrain for specific information.

:2. Uo = degrees in Urist, the measure of temperature within the Dwarf Fortress world. As far as is known, there is no functional difference between a material that melts at 12,005°U or 55,000°U - they are both equally "magma safe".

:3. There are 3 iron ores in the game - of those three, note that only Limonite is not magma safe.

:4. Sphalerite has "no" melting point, but boils at 12,133°U - further research is necessary in this context - use at your own risk for the time being. This is accurate for the actual mineral, which sublimes at this temperature rather than having a liquid state, but how it behaves in Dwarf Fortress may be unclear.

Be aware that once you have a hospital zone defined - all your injured dwarves will immediately run there at top speed and start to "Rest" there. "Rest" job can not be interrupted by any other job because a resting dwarf gains "unconscious" state. If you have no uninjured dwarves to bring food and water all patients will eventually get thirsty and dehydratate to death. Insanity breaks the "rest" job and the mad dwarf will wake up and wander around but it isn't helping.
If all your dwarves are injured to some extent - don't designate hospital zones.
I had a few injured dwarves; they ended up starving to death in the hospital while a surgeon tried to perform surgery. Do I need to put food stockpiles in the hospital? Does it need a well? --Bombcar 16:46, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
:Were all your other dwarves busy? As "bring food/water to injured" is like a well job and will only occur when no other order is deemed more important.Kenji 03 11:24, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Nearby pond/pool of water
I think it's very important to make note that a pond or pool be located inside or at least in a room adjacent to the hospital. See my user page if you want details, but the basics is that doctors (and possibly other dwarves) will run to the nearest water source to clean an injured/resting dwarf if they're dirty/muddy/bloody/whatever. The problem is both sieges and distance. During a siege, your doctor's going to get killed, plain and simple. Yeah, other dwarves will get killed bringing water to dwarves, too, so it's important anyway. Another thing is distance. Say you have a bloody dwarf with a badly dented chest, and another dwarf with a mangled, broken head gushing blood. For whatever reason, your doctor decides to diagnose Urist McDentedChest first. The next course of action is cleaning. Your doctor then grabs the nearest bucket from your hospital coffers, runs up the stairs to the nearest murky pool, brook, or river and halfway back to the fortress gate, UristMcGushingBloodOutHisHeadHemmorage bleeds to death.

On another note, dwarves do seem to clot very well now compared to old 40d. UristMcGushingHead in my fort has stopped bleeding, and even gone from extreme pain to faint to pale, and now he's back to only fainting, but if you go into battle with multiple wounded dwarves, you're going to have your doctors making multiple runs outside. Inside water needs to be made an important point. With the irrigation technique required at the moment, it shouldn't be too hard to explain since a similar technique is used. --Ryun 21:51, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Would a well suffice?

::It should, but I have not yet gotten to the point of making a well so I can't say I've tested it. With the abundance of underground pools, it shouldn't be difficult to make. I had suggested a pool initially because they would be easy to set up (except a little difficult to get full) for a new fort. I assume they should, anyhow. Once I bend my head around the technique of getting down to those pools multiple z-levels below, I'll test it.

::After several stupid mining errors ("Let's use the channel ramps to mine instead of digging out the topmost staircase and get stuck forever!") it appears that wells do indeed work for supplying dwarves water. However, I would like a recommendation that the hospital is put on the z-level as closest as possible to an underground pool if that is the water source. Dwarves take a fairly long time to get water when the distance the bucket must travel exceeds greater than 3 z-levels. Prep with multiple wells as well, of course, especially if you must place the well a long distance from the water source.--Ryun 22:03, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
::: The sub page idea could be a way of clearly making a place for anecdotes that would otherwise show up in article pages or talk pages (where talk pages would (in theory) be more about the factual/design content of the articles themselves. One of the wikis I am involved with is particularly prone to vandalism - the funny vandalism they move off to a sub page. This way, its still there as a record but isn't hampering discussion or reading the article itself. Realize I'm not calling anecdotes vandalism, but rather suggesting a similar way that they can be put somewhere so they don't hamper discussion or the article. --Shagie 23:25, 31 October 2007 (EDT)
: I understand they can be tamed by a Dungeon Master; does anyone know if they will still produce silk for the loom if tame? Is the webbing they spray at attacking enemies collectible for the loom? --Jellyfishgreen 10:08, 14 January 2009 (EST)
::To catch it, you would probably need a ton of cage traps and AT LEAST half a dozen recruits for bait (the faster the better). Beware: 'bait' has 90% fatality rate, and you may cause a tantrum spiral. Use a wave of immigrants you don't want for this (insane) task. --Arkenstone 04:47, 13 August 2009 (EST)
:::Alternatively, if it's inside a bottomless pit (and you know which level it's on), you can dig a tunnel up to it (but not all the way), build a cage trap, chain a puppy behind the trap, then dig out the final wall (and make sure everything inside the pit is forbidden, such as any ratman bones). If the spider has already revealed itself, place the tunnel somewhere in its line of sight - once it sees the chained animal, it'll make a beeline toward it and walk straight into the cage trap. In my latest fortress, I got impatient and unchained the first dog to reveal the spider, then chained a second one to lure it into the trap - my GCS silk farm can easily generate over a hundred webs per season. --Quietust 17:57, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
:::The way I managed to capture one was by digging a tunnel that was in as direct a line as possible from where the Giant Spider was hanging out to the entrance of my fort. (Making sure the end point of the tunnel was far enough away from the spiddy that it didn't "trigger" it to attack.) Then I built a cage trap inside and activated a dwarf of mine who was supper agile (fast) and slowly walked him towards the spider. As soon as the spider started moving I deactivated my dwarf and the civilianized dwarf headed back twards my fort taking the shortest route possible (through the tunnel). Spider followed and got caught. I lost my first dwarf trying this out, but was successful with my second. --Frewfrux 16:52, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
::So, the question still stands: Can you use tame GCS to produce webbing? Do they only shoot it at enemies, and can you collect it? --24.179.141.137 23:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
:::I imagine it best not to tame them to harvest the silk. Instead, try to entomb them hostile into a 1x1 room with a fortification in it which faces your silk industry. Dwarves going to work in the shop or hauling from the stockpile will anger the spider enough to make it vomit web through the fortification, continually replenishing your stocks? ::::GCS silk farms work just fine if the spider is tame, provided you use hostile bait. Also, your described setup would not work at all - a GCS won't shoot webs unless it has a valid path to its target (ideally involving unlocked but pet-impassable doors, due to a pathfinding bug), and putting it right near your workshops would make it impossible for your dwarves to do anything at all, instead constantly running away from what they perceive to be a hostile creature. --Quietust 13:34, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
::::Problem is, it'll scare the dwarves and you'll be flooded with job cancellation spam. Actually, I bet most of the silk would never even be collected, as everyone would be too scared to go close enough to the cage to get it. --Arrkhal (not logged in)
::::Oh, and a tame one will still shoot webs at hostiles. Just use captured, unarmed goblins. Either with the spider in a fortification "cage," or the lazy way and just "feed" it the gobbos. --Arrkhal (not logged in)
Anyone have this problem? I've a tame giant cave spider that just keeps randomly dying while staying in my meeting hall. It was perfectly healthy. I assume that the creature is somehow "freezing" to death, even though I'm on a warm map? I come to this conclusion because of its homeotherm:10040 and no layering, perhaps, and I'm thinking that it is too hot for the creature. -Belathus 07:17, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Sensitive to Motion
Anyone else find that Giant Spiders appear to be sensitive to motion? Needs more testing, but A) when my sacrificial pet entered a giant spider’s lair it was safe while it didn’t move. As soon as it moved the spider shot at it with webbing and proceeded to devour it. And B) when a soldier stood in front of a row of fortifications with a giant spider behind it nothing happened, but when he was set to “patrol” along the border of the fortifications the giant spider would occasionally shoot at him with webbing. --Frewfrux 17:00, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Harvesting Giant Cave Spider Silk
For those who are inclined to try, it is definitely possible to harvest Giant Cave Spider (GCS) silk. While profitable, it can also be fairly costly in terms of how many dwarves end up dying in the attempt to capture the creature, but once captured there are at least two methods of harvesting the GCS silk.

1) Build a series of rooms which are connected by floodgates (floodgates can’t get stuck open) each of which has a tile channeled out above it and an activity zone making the hole a pit into the GCS’s den. Then all you need to do is drop in an animal and the GCS will (eventually) shoot at it with its webbing and eat it up. Once the GCS moves to another of the connected rooms you can go in to harvest the webs.

2) Slightly more efficient then the above method, you can also place your captured GCS in its cage along the length of a wall, link the cage to a lever, build fortifications around the cage so that the GCS can’t escape, and pull the lever releasing the GCS. Once it is released, place a recruit on patrol along the length of the fortifications. The GCS will occasionally shoot at the soldier causing webbing to appear which can be harvested. (No dwarves or animals are harmed with this method.)
Anyone else know of any GCS silk harvesting methods? --Frewfrux 17:25, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
:Floodgates will get jammed open if there's anything there, and I'm pretty sure spider webs are included. If you want a gate that will never get jammed, better make it a raising bridge. As for actually farming the silk, there are several methods that involve pet-impassable doors and chained creatures such that the spider can't reach its target but shoots webs anyways. --Quietust 17:37, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
::I don't know why, but for some reason I was under the impression that floodgates would crunch anything that gets caught in them. I have no idea why I thought that, however. I guess I'm going to have to pay a bit more attention to my spider den now that I know the doors can get stuck open. --Frewfrux 17:48, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
:::I'll venture a guess as to why you'd think that: the Nethack castle drawbridge. --77.160.191.85 14:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
::::The Nethack castle drawbridge is actually much more similar to a Dwarf Fortress drawbridge - both act as atom smashers, utterly destroying anything in their tiles when they raise/lower (except for monsters that can phase through walls, of course). --Quietust 21:38, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
<br />
<br />
:You're overcomplicating this. I don't have the patience to go out and capture anything like a GCS, but this method should work:
#Build a 3x8 room.
#Build a 3x1 floodgate line down the middle, closer to the exit. Connect to a lever.
#Build a 3x1 grate line down the middle, farther to the exit. Connect to another lever.
#Build a chain in the dead center of the section that connects to the outside world.
#Build your GCS cage in the other half. Connect to another lever.
#Build a cage trap in a narrow hallway that leads out of the silking room.
#Build a floodgate infront of this cage trap - this is the actual barrier keeping civilized dwarves from the spider lair.
#Chain a cat or something to the silking room.
#Release your spider.
#Open the floodgates.
#Let the spider silk the cat.
#Close the gates.
#Collect webs.
#???
#Profit!
My bottomless pit has a load of items shown as Cave Spider Webs, however it seems whatever is making them is a GCS. One, almost every Batman in the pit has broken legs, even when they didn't go by the troll (yeah, it has a troll). Second, no cave spiders show up- I've personally seen the webs pop out of nowhere and ensnare (vermin) bats, then k'd over the spot and found nothing. ===Why would I be a good Administrator?===

I understand the wiki system, setting up and manageing templates/categories. I understand the system messages (which sysops have default access to modifying). I ran the sporewiki for a year+ prior to it's launch and am still a bureaucrat there even though I haven't edited in a while. I'm also an admin at sagan4wiki, which is a conceptual offshoot inspired by the spore game , I didn't create any of the content but the background organization/templates/messages are almost completely my work and the community decided to name the planet's moon after me because of how much I helped :D. I'm also still a sysop at cybernations wiki and did a lot of organization there, though I'm inactive in that game/wiki as well now.

Basically, there are a lot of things that can be done to improve a wiki that take a lot of testing and deleting of testing pages, moving over redirects, and modifications to system messages. The people who have admin powers now are awesome "leaders" but without a lot of time describing things that can be done, those sort of changes can't be easily completed.

There are three philosophies for "admins", or sysops which have developed over time on wikipedia.

#People who should get the position are people who deserve to be rewarded for maintenance stuff or content creation stuff
#People who should get the position are people who are good leaders, and should be "in charge"
#People who should get the position are people who could do good without the tools, but who could do more good with them.

I think #1 is unnecessary, assigning sysop as a reward system is not the right thing to do, because it shouldn't be about a "title". This leads nicely into #2, sysops shouldn't be in charge, they should be as accountable as anyone else, and if people think they are doing badly they should remove their power or have it removed. If we need "leaders" they should be bueracrats, and should recognize that the only types of people who get sysop would be #3. #3 is where I think I fall, and I think it makes the most sense. The community at large would be best helped by people contributing exactly as much as they are capable to contribute. I feel that if people can contribute to the wiki more if they could do a couple more things, then they should have it. The key point is that most people who are content-creators or typograpical-editors do not need these powers. This shouldn't make them feel less important, because they aren't. But people shouldn't feel like they are more important just because they have the powers either.

Public Discussion
It's clear that this person inspires an irrational hatred in others. Why doesn't matter. For a lot of you, your instinct in this kind of situation is to root for the underdog, and in general that may not be a bad idea. But think of this case in specific. We are trying to select a person for a position of authority in the wiki community. You want someone who can smooth over conflicts, and based on how we've seen Aescula deal with the situation (that is, by not responding to it in any way) it's pretty fair to say Aescula's competence in this regard is lacking. Pity is not in the best interest of the wiki. VengefulDonut 18:31, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

:I'd like to suggest that this NOT be a position of authority. Admins shouldn't be "in charge" they should be people who have a very small amount more abilities then the average registered user. They should be given these abilities not because they are good with people or not good with people, they should be given these abilities ONLY if they might provide more benefit to the community with them then without them. I'd like to believe that Aescula is relatively trustworthy. His edits seem like he has an intention of improving the wiki. His comments about his previous experience prove to me that at least he knows what he's talking about and he can provide slightly more use to the community with the admin powers.
:I'm not disagreeing with you on what abilities Aescula may or may not have with regard to personal interactions. In fact I'm not even commenting on them. I'm stating the fact that he isn't disruptive means that giving him a handful more tools means the site will be able to improve incrementally, and that's reason enough to do it. Mason11987 20:58, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

::Although the position gives no real power over other users, the larger set of privileges serves to make a person look more important. This makes it a position of authority, The kind of person we should have there should be one with good skills at interacting with other people, not a social pariah. VengefulDonut 21:37, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

:::I don't think you are suggesting Aescula is a "social pariah", but regardless...
:::You suggest that it makes the person look more important. I'm simply stating that is a matter of perception which we can simply change by declaring it is not accurate. If we all agree that admins aren't more important then this becomes a much simpler discussion and the wiki will benefit more because of it. I'm fine with having Briess be an "arbiter" if such a thing is necessary, which I'm skeptical of with such a small community. If we leave it at that then admins are just people who could provide more value because of the options they have been given. Mason11987 (T-C) 21:45, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

::I agree that if we all agree, we can squash the idea of importance imparted by admin status. However, I don't agree that we're likely to come to such an agreement :). Changing the perception of a large group of people is a big task. Also, the key role of an administrator on a wiki is an arbiter. The "administrative tools" mainly consist of deleting and locking, and those are practically married to arbitration. What else would you expect an administrator to do? VengefulDonut 22:00, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
::Also, "social pariah" may have been a slight exaggeration, but I don't think it's too much of a stretch. Openly declaring oneself a member of a commonly despised group is an act of severe ineptitude. The only exceptions to this are acts of protest intended to engineer a higher status for that group. I am certain this is not one of those exceptions. VengefulDonut 22:12, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
:::I think you misunderstand Aesc. If you look, she doesn't scream "I'm a furry!" It's mentioned once on her user page. She isn't hiding it, but she isn't making a big deal of it. It's the other idiots who are. It would be like if I said something like "I play DF because basketball is too hard for us whiteboys." and then everyone started hating me because I'm white. (As a couple caveats, I am in fact white, I don't usually get hate for being white, and that's not the greatest example. You get my point though.) Saying stuff like being a "modding hyena" is just who Aesc is. And, I should point out, that is exactly what userpages are for. Who you are. I mean, my userpage has various languages included on it, because I am interested in linguistics. It's who I am, and we shouldn't be eschewing people like Aesc because its who they are. That is just modern-day racism. --Waladil 23:45, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

::Being a furry is not "who you are". It's an association people make by choice. Unlike race and gender, it's not genetically coded into you. Unlike religion, it's not fueled by deep rooted conviction. It's an arbitrary and ultimately meaningless label that people can choose either to attach or not attach to themselves on a whim. VengefulDonut 00:11, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

:Also, it kind of matters as to what kind of a conflict-resolver Aesc is. Wikis need all sorts, from the kind of person who always is there keeping people in line to the kind of person who will wait for people to bicker themselves out, as long as it doesn't cause any real problems. Given that this is an opinion page, things that may be defamatory towards furries here can be seen as acceptable because they're opinions. Stupid and bigoted, yes, but so is every political pundit on Fox News. Moreover, I think it says a lot about Aesc that she isn't getting involved in this argument, because that means that she can keep her peace while other people poke fun at her. If people were saying those same things about me, I'd have deleted the comments, followed their IP's, and stabbed them in their faces. See why I'm not an admin? --Waladil 21:27, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

:VengefulDonut, care to give an example of my "inspiring irrational hatred"? Or is that just you trying to get me shut down? All I do is try to resolve things peacefully, update information as it's incorrect, add in what I think would be helpful, and otherwise, do my own thing in my own space. I've felt no hatred on this wiki whatsoever, until I looked at your post here. If it's because I'm a Furry, as Waladil pointed out, then that's just unjust hate on your part, as it's not like I go around screaming yiff, do I? I keep things professional. Anyways, if you can provide an example of that hate, then I'll consider this statement as based in fact, and not wild hate-speech. --Aescula 23:53, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

::I think it's pretty obvious that Freakazoid's behavior was irrational and was motivated by hatred. He hated you after learning things about you that he severely disliked. This is an example of "inspiring irrational hatred". Is this the kind of fact you were looking for? Also, I don't know where you got the impression that I hate you. I don't know you nearly well enough to have any sort of emotional response regarding you. I just think you're not qualified to hold the position you're seeking. VengefulDonut 00:09, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

:::Please note that Freakazoid and HugeShield were not bashing me, but rather were bashing Furries in general. I'm sorry for misunderstanding the comments you made here, but I saw this part before the votes, and so reacted on the defensive. The reason I'm so open about being a Furry in a situation like this is so I can work on reducing this sort of stereotype. Prove that we don't really do that. That's all. I mean, if you've seen me following it, running around shouting like an idiot and asking for sex every 23 seconds, then sure, you can hate me for that. But don't do it because I call myself a hyena, and say "paws" for "hands". It's just how I prefer to be. If you (and anyone else reading this section) would look at the Q&A, aside from the last question, and at my contributions and skills, instead of watching this drama, you'd see what matters here. This is, in fact, my first encounter with such hatespeech, and I'm dealing with it as best I can, and *really* trying to be peaceful, professional, and trying to defuse it instead of blowing it out of proportion. Yes, those two were being irrational. But that's the point. They were being irrational, and what matters in looking at qualifications is rationality, logic, and actual merit, not "OMG FURRY RUN FER YER LIF". It's basically discrimination, and one that won't be taken up by courts. Not yet, anyway. Kinda like saying "Yeah... You'd do well... But you're black. That'll cause all sorts of irrational hatred. I'm sorry, but I can't hire you." Again, no offense to blacks out there, I mean absolutely no disrespect, just using the most famous example. --Aescula 00:18, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

::::This is nothing like racism. Race isn't just a mask a person can shrug on and off. "Furry" is. The common stereotypes are completely irrelevant to this conversation. Why are you even mentioning them? I consider you socially inept because despite the prevalent hatred against furries, you still choose to wear that mask. VengefulDonut 00:26, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

:::::It's pretty close. It's an Internet version of it, really. Everything online is "just a mask you can shrug on or off" as you put it. I do wear the mask despite the hatred known around the internet, but not because I'm socially inept, but because I feel twenty times more comfortable in fur than in skin, and because I'm not a coward who hides behind the whim of the mob, I prefer doing my own thing. If my thing is being Furry, then why should that close doors to me that are open to others? That fact should help me in this, not hurt me, because instead of cowardice and succumbing to social pressures, I stick to my principles. If the social pressure is suddenly to write this whole wiki in 1337, then who would you want as administrators? --Aescula 00:34, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

::::I think that individualism and shrugging off social pressure are strong virtues that enable a person to enjoy their own life to the fullest. But they are also traits that damage your ability to blend in with a community and smooth over conflict. The way an admin might be expected to. The courage to disregard what other people want from you does not help you give other people what they want from you. VengefulDonut 00:46, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
::::Comparing how furries are treated to real social injustice is an insult to the civil rights movement. There are people who have had real problems that they couldn't escape from. They were stuck dealing with poor treatment their entire lives just because of who they are. They had to fight just to gain the right to live normal lives. You, on the other hand.. if you were so inclined, you could stop that sort of thing whenever you wanted. What exactly are you fighting for? You can't seriously expect to be able to say whatever you want about yourself and have everyone accept you. VengefulDonut 00:56, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Also, I'm one who, while not the most innovative, am very adaptive, and can usually come to understanding a language, like MediaWiki's, over a very small span, and then can work it as needed. --Aescula 23:22, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
*A:Oh, you mean all those votes against me because I'm a Furry? Yeah, sure. One simple comment. Don't listen to stereotypes. ==Public Discussion==

I ended up having a scorpion waltz into my base without anyone noticing. After surviving the stone fall traps at my entrance (admittedly my traps were only 2 rows deep)it proceeded to stroll past my Trade Depot and down the 1-tile wide path between my barracks and dining hall, again without anyone noticing. No one took any notice of the arachnid terror until it had walked into a room that I had set aside as an archery range and dismantled all of my archery targets. Anyways, I'm wondering if scorpions have a preference on targets as the one that made it into my fort ignored the Trade Depot, several doors and the beds, table, and chairs behind said doors as it proceeded straight to my archery range and destroyed archery targets. --Alkyon 08:35, 15 November 2008 (EST)
Tapping a brook
As long as you're on the same z-level as the water, you never need to worry about flooding no matter what the source. So even a river can be tapped that way. Now, if you want/need to drop it a z-level or more then flooding can be a serious issue, even with a brook. --Squirrelloid 17:14, 30 December 2008 (EST)

:Interesting, I've had nothing but trouble trying to do this with rivers, and no problems doing it with a brook, even when I drop it down a z-level to provide a given level of the fortress with a well. Just wanted to note another well strategy, as the original article said it was not recommended and/or very difficult to do with a brook, and I've found it easy. ::I have narrowly avoided flooding my fortress with a brook. ('Oh crap, water has pressure' as water starts flowing up out of my well). --Squirrelloid 10:57, 31 December 2008 (EST)
:::I have never had difficulty tapping brooks, and I don't use the "out" channel to relegate the flows. Water pressure is only a problem if you drop z-levels. This article smells really suspicious to me. Is there a flag for that? I doubt the validity of this argument. It seems outdated, and agrees with the old data, not the new. --Zchris13 19:54, 21 February 2009 (EST)
Point of the deep well shaft?
Why bother with deep well shafts? When the water on the tile right below the well is less than 4/7 deep, it says "Well dry". I don't really see the point. --Alpha 15:05, 20 February 2009 (EST)

:The deep well shaft is for if you are dropping the water any amount of z-levels. If you plan it right, it will work at any z-depth you want it too. Done wrong, and you have no water.--Zchris13 19:54, 21 February 2009 (EST)
Pumps
I notice that the article and its discussion make no mention of pumps, which would help control the water taken from a (channeled) brook tile since they "reset" water pressure. Or are we assuming a Luddite's guide? --FJH 20:21, 3 March 2009 (EST)
:Meh, it doesn't mention about anything else too. And things like "unless you use floodgates" "You will also want to control the water with floodgates" (not to mention that you better use lever controlled doors) --Koltom 22:00, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Nostalgia
Is anyone else sad to see the old well guide go (at least the pond draining part)? Despite its questionable tactical suggestions noted above, I liked how it took you step by step through an engineering project, with diagrams and warnings about precautions to take. I found that to be very helpful as a newbie trying to learn how to approach DF. What's left here seems like a mere description that belongs on well and much less guide-like. I vote to undo, but I readily concede that my judgment is clouded by sentimental attachment. --HebaruSan 04:40, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Found as veins?
Although I've found native platinum in small clusters quite a few times, on my current fortress map I've found native platinum in small and average sized veins within dolomite and magnetite more than once. So, does native platinum occur as veins as well? Could someone conform this? I don't think I'm gonna start a new fortress for some time. Think about all those riches... Noctis 03:22, 11 November 2007 (EST)

: Platinum can occur in veins inside bodies of magnetite or olivine. Magnetite is found pretty much anywhere, olivine is found in gabbro. --JT 07:02, 11 November 2007 (EST)
: I have found a native platinum vein (a huge one) near but not touching a magnetite deposit. Is this a bug, or can Platinum be found just laying around in Claystone? I can post a screenshot if proof is needed. --DarthCloakedDwarf 21:24, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
Mason
It seems any mason item can be made from platinum nuggets? I happen to be the "proud" owner of a native platinum floodgate and a native platinum armor stand *grr*. On the other hand I fail to make crafts from platinum nuggets (use in z/stone allowed, stonecrafter available..) --Koltom 12:37, 11 February 2008 (EST)

:Native platinum is an economic stone. If it is specifically enabled in the "Stone" menu, it can be used by masons and stone crafters. This holds true for all economic stones. However, masons and stone crafters use whatever rock is closest to them when they begin their job. In most cases this is the rock closest to the workshop. ::Well, i had my crafter locked in with 3 platinum nuggets, allowed in z-stone screen, told him to make rock crafts, mugs... nothing happened, showed 'no job'. I unlocked the door, off he goes picking up the next shale. Same with the mason, as soon as i canceled the cabinet he picked up platin and made the coffer next in line. == Veins/clusters ==
I found a small cluster (7 tiles) of native platinum, in the middle of an olivine deposit. Only mod used was reveal. Fixing. Decius 19:45, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

:I made a similar "mistake" - but I think this is valid. The template info comes from the RAW's - how the relationship between a stone and ore is defined in the game files. And for olivine, those are defined only as veins. But I've seen small clusters in olivine too often - something else has to be going on. Perhaps the olivine is somehow "inheriting" the small clusters from the parent gabbro layer - dunno, might be considered a bug, but it's there, and has been witnessed too many times to discount. --Albedo 22:20, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

::And there was no chromite present? If you want to list behavior that conflicts with raw data, it should be listed as a bug rather than normal. Also, a screenshot would be good. VengefulDonut 22:30, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
:::I've observed this myself - in fact, I've never seen a native platinum vein within olivine, only small clusters, and even when there is no chromite present. It occurs as veins just fine within magnetite, of course. --Quietust 23:27, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

::::Its getting better - i have a vein of 43 native plat. in limestone. The next cluster south is bauxite 10 tiles away and north magnetite 10 tiles away. Both big clusters have the usual oval shape, no other veins or even gems to distort the placing pattern are present. Unmodded DF, except for cat bug and removed benign from chasm creatures. So if we want to go by the raws we would have to argue that the vein got misplaced from the north cluster it belongs in. Which has a small cluster of 5 plat btw... --Birthright 10:46, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
:::::I've seen native platinum veins extend far beyond their magnetite clusters, though there's always a small gap in the vein (3-4 tiles or so) right at the edge of the magnetite. --Quietust 15:28, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
