spoiler

Reaching Hell
On digging sufficiently deep (Usually z-level ~40) you will eventually find huge magma lakes. These are surrounded by semi molten rock, which can not be cleared by digging but seems otherwise stable. Eventually, you will reach a layer which contains nothing but molten rock and little to no possibilities to pass.
You can reach the critical layer by digging through solid rock which gets rarer the deeper you dig. Beyond, there are two possibilities.
<br />
1. Digging through an adamantine vein:
<br />
Adamantine veins are shaped like tubes and breach through any layer of molten rock, right down into hell. The lower layers of the vein are hollow and act as a tube, leading straight to your doom. Breaching into the hollow centre of a vein has the same effect as breaching into hell, so beware. However, you can easily dig around the hollow core.
Note that adamantine veins always seem to end in mid air, so once you breached the final layer you face a horde of demons which hovers directly below your feet.
<br />
2. Entering a demonic fortress:
<br />
These fortresses are found at most once per map, most likely instead of the former glowing pits. They also go right through to hell, however they are defended by undead creatures and demons on the lower levels.

Demonic Fortresses
A demonic fortress is found usually once per area containing sufficient mountain tiles. It is located almost at the bottom, once you discover it it will be announced. Also, demons might be located at the bottom of the fortress. The fortresses contain random undead and skeletal creatures, and hordes of those; Note that the bottom of each fortress is connected to hell through slade walls, so demons spawning there can not immediately cross into the fortress and swarm you. Hell is only deemed reached once those final walls are dug out.
All in all, those structures seem to be the only reasonable way to enter hell itself, as there is plenty of space inside to set up traps and defense. It is also quite possible to reach the bottom layer of the fortress through controlled cave-ins without ever having to fight a single enemy.

Hell itself
Like the demonic fortress, you will receive an announcement on reaching hell. ("Horrifying screams come from the darkness below"). Once you discover hell, tons and tons of demons will be spawned. Prepare for the worst, there can easily be hundreds of demons spawned. It is unclear whether the amount of demons is finite.

Magma lakes are located at the bottom of every map, forming an almost impenetrable barrier. They also provide a great source of magma.

Magma pipes
Magma pipes are present in the new version of Dwarf Fortress as well. They can be found underground, however they rarely reach the upper z-levels (40+). Most end just a few z-levels above the magma lakes, some span up to 30 z-levels, however that seems to remain the exception.
Magma pipes seem to be always connected to a magma lake and often lake and pipe reach up to the same level, making them hard to separate. However, magma pipes are surrounded by obsidian walls and can thus be identified.
Also, magma pipes refill themselves, which provides a never depleting magma reservoir.

Adamantine veins go directly upwards, thus once you discovered the location of a vein in one z-level you can easily trace it down to the very bottom.
<br />
1. Digging through an adamantine vein:
<br />
<br />
2. Entering a demonic fortress:
<br />

The fortresses contain random undead and skeletal creatures, and hordes of those; Note that the bottom of each fortress is connected to hell through slate walls, so demons spawning there can not immediately cross into the fortress and swarm you.

The ore of adamantine is absurdly valuable, and can be processed into the most valuable material in the game, both in monetary worth and utility. Its discovery is both a boon and a bane; it has a massive value even unrefined, and weapons and armor made from it are very likely among the best possible. Its high melting point means you can easily use it to build magma-safe mechanisms and floodgates, but this is not recommended due to its scarcity and value in other items.

Raw adamantine has a Material Multiplier of x250. For a comparison to other mined materials, generic stone has a MM of x1, obsidian x3, silver nuggets x 10, and Gold nuggets x30. Processed adamantine "metal" has a multiplier of x300, the highest in the game of any material.

__TOC__

Adamantine is so valuable, both in price and usefulness, that a special message pops up when your miners discover the first vein of it.

Location
Every map can contain adamantine, regardless of the location. Very small maps can lack adamantine veins, usually however multiple veins are present (~1 per 4 embark squares).

Veining
Raw adamantine veins, in contrary to usual veins, span z-levels, leading almost directly upwards Adamantine veins span up to and including 90 z-levels, possibly even more. The top most layers of the vein are full of adamantine whereas the lower levels are hollow, having a 2x2 squares empty core, some of the tiles inside can be floor tiles, others are simply open space.

Mining
Adamantine veins go directly upwards, thus once you discovered the location of a vein in one z-level you can easily trace it down to the very bottom.

minorspoiler

One serious downside to mining veins of raw adamantine is that digging too deeply into the hollow section will eventually lead to a certain spoiler, triggering dangerously large amounts of fun which can and usually will wipe out even a mature, heavily defended fortress.
1. Digging through an adamantine vein:
Adamantine veins are shaped like tubes and breach through any layer of molten rock, right down into hell. Some of those veins are hollow by default and have each layer separated through floor tiles.
2. Entering a demonic fortress:
These fortresses are found at most once per map, most likely instead of the former glowing pits. They also go right through to hell, however they are defended by undead creatures.

Demonic Fortresses
A demonic fortress is found usually once per area containing sufficient mountain tiles. It is located almost at the bottom, once you discover it it will be announced. They contain random undead and skeletal creatures, and hordes of those.
Note that they are connected through slate walls with hell, so demons spawning there can not immediately cross into the fortress and swarm you.
All in all, those structures seem to be the only reasonable way to enter hell itself, as there is plenty of space inside to set up traps and defense.

Reveal (or Reveal.exe as it is commonly referred to) is a program that runs alongside Dwarf Fortress and shows all "unexplored" or "undug" tiles of the map (in fortress mode). To reveal entire map designate the entire bottom level to be mined and then remove designation before running reveal. Playing on revealed map might (read "will") cause some bugs (like not being able to build magma buildings or a tower-cap farm, losing all plants/trees on the map, and a lot more). Using Reveal has been known to corrupt saved game folders. and, as such, it is highly recommended to only use Reveal to preview a biome's layout and then restart without running Reveal.

There are two versions of Reveal, one for Vista and newer, one for XP and older.

The new version of Reveal.exe (Reveal2) is in public beta, you can find it here Reveal2. Please report problems in 0x517A5D's Talk page.

Pasting the following code into reveal2.ini makes it work for the newest (DF2010) version of Dwarf Fortress:
