A magma forge is a Template:L which does not require Template:L or other Template:L, as long as it is positioned over Template:L. In order to function, the forge must be exactly one Z-level above a lava or magma square. Magma forges cannot draw from many Z-levels below themselves as Template:L can. It must be built of Template:L
A magma forge will not function unless at least one of its eight edge squares hang over a channel which has magma at a depth of 4/7 or more. Template:L will not roast when working inside a magma forge, unlike the unlucky soldiers you station right next to the vent. Note that there must NOT be magma in the channel when you construct it. So it's a bad idea to replace one magma-using building with another, unless you're prepared to do some complex obsidian casting to free the channel of magma, rebuild it, then channel magma into it again.
Note that if the magma depth falls below 4/7, even for a moment, the forge will immediately cancel all of its jobs. If the forge has been claimed by a dwarf in a Template:L, this will result in instant Template:L, even if the forge returns to normal a moment later. For this reason it is advisable that you isolate the magma supply for your magma workshops from your other magma plumbing, and if possible use Template:L floodgates or some other method to seal the magma into a separate channel solely for the use of the workshops.
